Me too..at 59 yrs old now..it's news to me. My sister REALLY looked like Shemp. She's been gone for 20 years already. Even her two boys when they were little ( and introduced to the stooges already) said"..WOW.. you look like Shemp.".😇when she'd just had a shower & her hair was wet. Fun Fact: The first use of the TERM "fake Shemp" was from Sam Raimi in The Evil Dead where he lost a lot of his crew members due to budgeting (and other constraints) so some of the actors filled in. Bruce Campbell was actually credited in the credits as Fake Shemp (as well as himeself) in the sequel.

Great video Rick! “ The Boys “ were short in stature, averaging between 5’4” and 5’5” and complemented each other quite well. Joe Palma, who had worked with them for years as a “heavy”… Stood at 5’10”,and when he shared a scene with the Stooges,he had to crouch down…. Imagine what it was like to do a scene with an actor ,and pretend he was a partner, or in Moe’s case,a brother. That must have killed them both… Many people are critical that when they view a Stooge movie, ,that they had “ just scene this part “ in a previous short. Remember when they were first released, they were spaced years apart,as shown with a Columbia full length feature, so the chances are you wouldn’t notice. When released to television,it was easier to spot the repeats…as always Rick, keep up the great work and keeping the memories of the Stooges alive.

My favorite "3rd" Stooge is Curly, but the rest of them that filled out the trio certainly did an excellent job. Moe was the survivor of them all. Though it was certainly sad for him that he endured the illnesses and death of his brothers, and the other fellows like Joe that filled out the troop, it was really nice that he went on the TV variety shows to talk about the old times, and sometimes even do a pie throwing skit.

Robert Holmberg-Nope. The contract the boys signed for the 1956 season stipulated that they make eight shorts, but only four were finished at the time Shemp died, so Columbia hired Joe Palma to double for Shemp, thus completing the boys' contract. Moe initially had wanted Joe DeRita as third Stooge, but he was unavailable, so Columbia hired Joe Besser to finish their tenure for the studio, before being fired. Curly Joe was hired to take Joe's place after his wife became ill, and he left the act to care for her.

At 8:38 that was not Christine McIntire with Kenneth MacDonald, but a body double, as she had retired from acting in 1955. Plus, the clip from Scheming Schemers had Moe and Larry watching K-Mac's character shoving the painting inside the pipe; in the original, it was Shemp who saw this.

I was one of those kids that watched the three stooges every day. When I got home from school in the 1950's. I would watch the Officer Joe Bolton show on WPIX. He wore a police officer's uniform and I actually believed that he was a New York City Police Officer. And then later on (in the evening), I would see him(Joe Bolton) doing the channel 11 weather(sponsored by Tasty cakes) I grew up in Bridgeport, Connecticut . And I am proud to say that I am a retired high school social studies teacher in Connecticut. But meanwhile, back to Shemp. The humor with Curly was classic and funny. But with Shemp, it was very funny, very rough and sometimes sadistic. Now(when I watch him) it seems like, he would do anything to make a scene work. I have seen these episodes (above) recently on TV land. They(the cutting room people) did a great job, fooling the public( especially us kids in the 50's, lol).( Fake Shemp)(Joe who?)I guess he goes in the closet,(with Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny )Thank you Mr. Nineg, for your insights and discussions about 1950' s and 1960's television and films. Back yonder, the idea of a rerun, copies landing in private collections (you,.me, anyone) or even enhancing the visuals was not even thought of so at the time, reusing old footage from previous shorts was easily fooled. Only the most of die hard Stooges fans, who was alive from short one onward and has great memories would know that repeats of old shorts was being used in the later years. Of course, film quality in the 50s would be way better technology than film the world had in the 30s so a good eye could catch the difference in scene quality.

Unless they used old film tech from the 1930's or 1940's that was cheap to get in 1950 and used the same film as 1950's as in same size and worked in the cameras or they used a special lens that made something look old and worn from 20 years earlier but made recently in the 1950's.

The thing which surprised me the most was how little of Fake Shemp there actually was in these shorts. It seems like they consisted of mostly old footage plus scenes with Moe and Larry only.

Having watched all of these shorts as a kid, I never noticed (nor would have thought) that someone named Joe was standing in for Shemp after he had died. Watching them now, it's almost obvious, especially with the re-used footage. But, then again, who would have thought that 80 years later we would be re-watching and dissecting these either!

Picked up on the "fake Shemp" years ago always wondered why this "Shemp" had his face covered and didn't sound just right the few bits he was supposed to talk. Another telltale clue is that both Moe and Larry are noticeably older in the new scenes when spliced in with the old footage.

I grew up watching the Stooges on my local Pittsburgh television station, WTAE Channel 4. It's host appeared in the Stooges western film in the early 1960's, (as did most of the hosts from around the country that had essentially brought the Stooges back to popularity). The "gimmick" for the film was that all of these TV hosts would have a small scene in the film and would then be able to engage the kids in the audience to come to the movie theater and see, not only the Stooges, but the host as well.

"Fake Shemp" is a common term for a stand-in for an actor that starts filming but leaves or passes away during the production. Bruce Lee in Game of Death, Heather O'Roarke in Poltergeist 3, and Paul Walker are great examples. The most infamous was Bela Lugosi in Plan 9. He died during the movie and was replaced by the director's dentist.

Great video. I am a Stooges fan from way back and have that DVD set and love it. During the pandemic I watched them in order from the very first one up to the solo shorts of Shemp, Joe Besser and DeRita. I recommend watching those as well. I know most people are fans of the trio when Curly was the 3rd stooge. Comparing each incarnation is like trying to compare different types of apples. Each brought their own style to being a 3rd Stooge and the dynamics of the trio changes each time. Even in my younger days I knew there was a stand in for Shemp in those remakes. It had to be hard on both Moe and Larry trying to get through the filming of them, much like Half-Wits Holiday, where Curly had a stroke on set and they had to finish it without him.

I remember reading about the "dead Shemp" episodes years ago and always looked out for the ones where Joe was onscreen. I did notice he was usually facing away from the camera and would rush off screen after a few seconds leaving Larry and Moe to finish the episode. He was also much taller so he's usually stooped over. Great video!

To see another great shot of Joe Palma, check out the 3 Stooges short called "If a Body Meets a Body". This short has Curly in it. Joe Palma's the maid the Stooges run into near the end of the short. Notice how he towers over them when he stands up.

It always depressed me to think that during the filming of these Fake Shemp shorts, in order to splice in archival footage of the real Shemp, Moe was forced to say lines like, "Hey Larry, where's Shemp?" knowing full well that his brother was sealed up in a crypt at the Home of Peace Cemetery.

As a Stooges fan, I did know about Joe Palma being used as a stand-in for Shemp for four shorts. But aside from Hot Stuff, he was always seen from the back, or he covered his face in some manner. And his lines were simply dubbed over from previous shorts. Again, Hot Stuff was the exception to all of these.

In the Evil Dead movies they sometimes subbed a different actor in for later reshoots. In his book Bruce Campbell refers to the practice as "Shemping."

I can see why, for many people, Curly is their favorite third stooge, but I think Shemp is very funny on his own and certainly deserves more respect than he gets. Bear in mind that Shemp had a very successful solo career and was in a lot of movies before he rejoined the Stooges in 1946. Shemp wasn't Curly, but he was a worthy successor.

My younger brother and myself were big stooges fans ( he passed this year). He had an enormous set of shorts and movies of the stooges and we would watch them and talk about the stooges when ever we got together (I lived 500 miles away). But we never talked about Joe Palma and knew nothing about "fake Shemp". This has been very enlightening. Too bad Wally is no longer here to enjoy this with me.

Thank you so much for this video. I've seen "Fake Shemp" discussed before, but never in this much detail. Now I know his name was Joe Palma. So interesting to learn exactly how they finished the last four remaining shorts that The Three Stooges were contracted for at the time. I'm a big Shemp fan. In all honesty I enjoyed *all* of the Stooges including Joe Besser and Joe DeRita. But Shemp brought something version special to the act. Thanks again for this video and for the giveaway. An average Joe like me really appreciates it. (There! Have I mentioned the name "Joe" enough times?) Blessings to you!

I've been a fan of the Stooges since my very first introduction to them back in 1963. My parents weren't exactly thrilled with my "addiction". Moe, Larry, and Curly were my favorites. When they brought on Curly-Joe, my interest started to wane, as I thought he was severely mis-cast. It took some time for me to accept Shemp as an actual Stooge, but he eventually grew on me. I had NO IDEA there was a "fake Shemp" until seeing the video! Joe Palma did a pretty good job of filling in the blank spots where "real Shemp" should have been! THANK YOU rick nineg for the educational and entertaining videos. Keep them coming!

What the movie fans saw on the big screen back in the day WAS "HD". It was crisp and clear. It can't be compared to a 480P DVD shown on a large screen. So the illusion was entirely creative edits, cover and the expectations of the audience.
