Hi Siobhan: Thanks for this wonderful video and for sharing your journey. I loved that you said everyone's experiences are different; yours sound very similar to one of my best friends who now has two prosthetic eyes. My eye condition is microphtttthalmia--underdeveloped eyes. I've never needed to have my eyes removed, but if there was ever a medical reason to, I think I would initially struggle with how losing my eyes might change how I look. So I don't think your thoughts about that were vain at all. I'm glad your experiences were pppositive and you had great support from medical professionals. I'm not grossed out by the idea of eye removal, and I think it's an important topic that deserves more awareness. On that note, I'm out of here for now; I have a dog who just let out a long and dramatic groan: "Hello! I want some attention!"

This was a great video. Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I have glaucoma also but mine is not the kind where I get my pain which in one way if you’re a good because I don’t need to experience the difficulty of that but in other ways presents its own challenges because I have to go get my pressure checked often since I don’t have the paint to tell me if they’re out of range

sightlesshero i’m sorry I thought I had replied to your initial comment on here. Thanks for sharing something that is very personal to you. I didn’t find that I was grieving over the fact that I had them removed, I think the biggest barrier for me was the psychological aspect of it which I quickly overcame when I realised everything went to plan and I was reassured throughout the whole process. Please keep me updated with your progress. X

Hi Siohban. I happened to come across this video while browsing RU-vid and really appreciated your comments about your prosthetic eyes. I also wear 2 prosthetic eyes so it was very easy for me to relate to you although your story is different from mine. I unfortunately lost my eyes from trauma so I did not have a choice to make any decision on the reality of having my eyes removed whatsoever. I had full enucleation of both and it left me without any natural movement. But that being said I have had prosthetic eyes for 29 years now and honestly because I was blinded anyway I have been happy with the result in the end both cosmetically and functionally with no real problems other than occasional dryness and allergy irritations. Usually people who don't know me don't even realize my eyes are not real. That does lead to the occasional comments like you receive that I'm not really blind or I'm faking blindness. I rarely remove my prosthetic eyes for any reason but a simple tapping on my plastic eyes with my fingernails usually solves the problem of people's comments and thinking I am not really blind. More power to those of us who have prosthetic eyes! Sallye

Hi Daniel, thank you so much for stopping by and taking the time to write this message. I am so sorry to hear your mum is in immense pain, bless her heart. For me having both eyes removed at different times was the best decision. Psychologically I did have to prepare myself but I'm so much happier now I'm out of pain. Please do feel free to reach out or if your mum needs to chat, I'm happy to do that as well if it will help. Take care.

I have a cosmetic shell in my left eye. The original eye is still there but is sunken inwards. I therefore wear a shell in front of the real eye to make it look normal. Otherwise my eye lip would permanently closed with a sunken eye socket.

Stanley Wiggins it’s a video I’ve been wanting to do for a long time because there is so many myths about it. I just want to educate people that it’s not gruesome or disgusting, but it’s a simple procedure I do every day to clean my eyes. I think it would give people a little more information and awareness about it. Watch this space. Literally, watch this space. Thanks for your comment and stopping by.

Hello. I hope your doing well. Is what you see since both eye removal the equivalent to what sighted people see as blackness or something else? How has it affected your other senses & perception of the world?
@BlindGirlVlogs
@BlindGirlVlogs 3 года назад
BlueLangur thank you so much for your comment. I guess the easiest and probably most simplistic exclamation of whether I see complete darkness is probably by saying it’s black, it’s nothing, which I know probably is hard to comprehend as a sighted person. :-). However, this is not the case for everyone but my senses are definitely more tuned in to my environment and surroundings because I use touch and of course my hearing to navigate. My hands are my eyes and at the moment what with the whole pandemic, it’s made things a little more difficult when out and about as touching objects and locating items in shops or supermarkets can’t really happen for obvious reasons. My perception of the world really is brought to life by people explaining beautiful scenery is of landscapes to me, using my own senses like taste, touch, smell and hearing to appreciate different environments weather here in the UK or exploring other cultures abroad. Understandably a lot of what we take in is through our vision but for me as someone with no sight, I use other methods to appreciate this beautiful world. Great questions, and thanks for asking and stopping by.

Hi. Greetings from Winnipeg. Not sure why You Tube recommended your video since I have no problems with my eyes, but decided to watch it anyways. Good job - great video, and btw- For someone like me who has absolutely no knowledge of your condition and prosthetic eyes I am shocked? I was sure they are your eyes since they move simultaneously in the same direction and ….well how is this even possible that they move???? They look so natural ? Sending blessings.

Bless your heart, thank you so much for taking the time to write this message and for also watching the video. I still have a shell muscle behind my prosthetic eyes because I wanted to keep some natural movement which is why they are able to slightly move about. :-). Glad you found it informative. @BlindGirlVlogs
@BlindGirlVlogs 3 года назад
Hey, thank you for reaching out and I’m so sorry to hear you are going through this. Please can I reassure you in saying that your doctors and consultants definitely want the best outcome for you. In terms of the operation, like any other it’s a little pain and discomfort but it doesn’t last forever and knowing that it will help you medically is one sure way of going for it. I’ve now had both eyes removed and for me it was the best decision I made because I’m no longer in extreme agony and I feel I can live a life without pain and discomfort. Ultimately the decision will always be yours but now having two prosthetic eyes nobody would know that I am totally blind or that there is anything wrong looking at me because the prosthetic eyes are so incredible these days. it gave me that reassurance after having the first one and knowing that everyone said it looked brilliant, I was then encouraged to go for the second eye removal. In terms of feeling normal, I guess it would depend on each person but for me once my prosthetic eyes were in, I felt complete and confident in myself again. Personally I would go for it and although it’s a scary prospect, believe in your consultants and make that decision. Only you can make that choice but I’ve been there and I felt the emotions you are feeling right now, but go for it because you will never look back. I’m glad this video could help you in some small way. Keep strong.

I am mindful that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but what I do want to stress to people is that it’s not disgusting and gruesome. Do people when they meet you for the first time think you’re sighted because your fake eyes look so real? Do you use a cane and dog to walk? You see basically nothing, just dark black with no light perception? Do you read braille with your fingers? Your name, Siobhan, it’s Irish, is it pronounced Shavahn?

Hey, welcome to my channel and thank you so much for your comments. I love your questions too. Yes sometimes I have had many people not realise straight away that I am blind, especially if I'm sitting around a conference table, people can often forget. I use a guide dog but I also use a long cane as well. Hard to describe seeing nothing, I suppose the easiest concept is complete black but I don't even see that. It's nothing. Hard to comprehend I'm sure. Smile. Yes my name is Irish.
