Have you ever seen a little, black speck floating across your field of vision? It's called a floater, but what exactly is it? Dr. Moos explains. Use #AskAnEyeDoc to ask YOUR general eye-related questions.
The inside of the eye is filled with a jelly-like substance, which helps give it its shape. Sometimes, little chunks of that "jelly" are floating around in the eye and cast a shadow. That shadow is what you see as the little speck.
Floaters are very common, and most of the time we don't notice them. When you do notice them, it's hard to follow them. Frustrating, isn't it?
Dr. Moos says floaters are harmless, but it's always a good idea to share information about your eyes when you make your annual visit to the eye doctor. (You can find an eye doctor near you here: goo.gl/vNTEJW)
