In this video, I'm sharing my darkest secret with you. It's something I've been keeping hidden for years, but after years of struggling and guilt, I've finally decided to come out and talk about it.
This debt confession is one of the most difficult things I've ever done, but it's also one of the most freeing. I hope by sharing my story with you, you can learn from my mistakes and avoid making the same mistakes.
Thank you for taking the time to watch this video. I appreciate your support.

I realised after uploading that if you're new here - you'll know nothing about our circumstances or even who I am.... I guess I just felt like I was confessing to my friends. lol. In my update video I will be sure to be more inclusive. If you have any questions please feel free to leave them in the comments and I will endeavour to ensure I include the answers in the next video. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and hopefully comment ❤ Mel ps. for the next instalment and update check out this playlist ru-vid.com/group/PLOQdR5OVSlXMEStBrmmaGYYAXQog30Xhh

Dear Mel, facing or problems is the first step in order to solve them. Putting ourselfs down for bad decicions we've made in the past only leads to frustration and more bad decicions. Accepting that we can't change our past but only our present is the key to changing our future. I am super proud of you!

Mel, nothing but FIERCE admiration for your transparency. I think it's brilliant to write it all down the way you have here, and I will try to do the same. Rather than make a budget where I spend all of my "pay" (carers allowance/weekly household budget) with no real organisation, you've inspired me to structure the outgoings, and focus on how to eliminate them where i can. I too am paying off an apple watch, and I am simply going to start cracking away at it.

Huge hugs Mel! You aren't alone, I am really struggling to not go over on my credit cards every single month. I finally told the kids last month that they are just going to have to deal with not having everything they want in groceries, and opened a bill pay account, and am trying not to use the credit cards at all...... not there quite yet, but working on it.
@MySemiSortedLife
@MySemiSortedLife Год назад
I think my biggest downfall was that I actually was earning some money that made a difference to our lifestyle for the first time ever and I went a bit stupid. I need to tone it down now..... a lot.
@GoingGreenMom
@GoingGreenMom Год назад
@@MySemiSortedLife the first time I tried to get debt taken care of I started with all the recurring expenses. Starting with subscriptions, and then even down to disposable products that had easy reusable replacements..... Like duster things or reusable straws (purchased in place of the run out of but needed disposable option so it isn't adding a ton to the expenses.... At first we didn't use or need straws, so I didn't buy them even though it seemed to be the first thing zero wasters were told to buy). At 1 point I cancelled Amazon prime and did a year without it to break the shopping addiction I had developed. I actually recancelled it last year and went to 1 monthly order for necessities we are running out of. At least here there is free shipping on orders above 25$ that would have qualified for prime. I add stuff to my cart through the month, then save for later anything that is not absolutely necessary at the end of the month. Last month I had been planning to replenish my son's shampoo, but he had enough to get by til this month. So he has the most economical option which was 2 big bottles coming this month. And a bottle of sunscreen, and it seems like something else, but it is only the kinds we use and know to work well and not a bunch of extras. If I know something is a want it gets added to the wish list, and maybe if it's small it will become a reward after so much debt is paid off. At least that is my plan. I had gone on a zero waste kick a few years ago trying to eliminate what we could, and that has been very helpful in keeping the needs low which wasn't an expected outcome. But reducing how much of stuff we used or eliminating it altogether meant it didn't need to be rebought again. I'm rambling, sorry, and not suggesting any of this stuff would work for you, but just things that helped me that I wasn't actually expecting. Of course now if I get out of control on spending I have less to cut out of the budget too. 🤣

Hey Mel, just a thought , maybe you could go to your own bank and see if they can consolidate all of the credit dept onto one card, the bank pays out the other parties and you now pay the total back on one card, one fortnightly payment , one interest rate and I’m sure it will free you up where to can pay extra on it and in no time have that dept paid off , it’s great that you have a plan but hopefully this bit of advice might help as well

Oh Mel, I just want to give you a hug x I'd seriously approach the bank and look at if they can help consolidate the loans and so you can massively clear out stuff and then I'd seriously look at your budget and start allocating funds / offset into bank accounts that you can't access and is immediately direct debit to companies / bills (it's what a lot of ADHD / impulse control people do to make sure they always are covered). For the next few weeks your going to feel absolutely terrible but you WILL get through this I know you! I'm going to be doing a video soon about setting up the most basic budget / idea as I've just had someone contact me asking how to help so this way I can do it semi detached as they say. We live in a world where buy, buy, buy is in our face. Because of online goods, buying is easier than it has ever been. As your pay check gets bigger, the more you spend. Even if you decide bankruptcy, it will still be an all uphill battle. You aren't alone. Simply facing the addiction is extremely difficult. Figuring out how to go about crawling out from under the mountain is a major feat. Worst part is the application of what you have learned. I look at the same way I do my so called diet. Fight the addiction! Daily basis. Rinse and repeat. I hate it! Nothing shameful about it. Our entire society has been built on it:(

We had a lot of debt when we’re younger too, it takes time but you can do it! We had two cars loans and a house and card card debt etc 🙀 Hubby will be 60 in October and I’ll be 59 in September and we about to pay our house off and hubby is retiring and we will be debt free. We kinda did the snowball thing but not like Dave Ramsey does it and that was back in 1998 after we bought our first house. We were 34 & 35 yrs old at the time. We put everything extra towards thing with highest interest. But when we paid off our car we put that money towards the house etc we paid off our 30yr mrtg in 16 yrs. Then we sold that house in 2012 and bought another bigger house but that was the only debt since then. Everything was paid in cash in full since then. You guys can do it! You will get there! 👍👍👍

Sometimes (?often) you have to do things out of order like pay down some debt in order to not add more debt, get caught up, or get things paid on time. It is simply the way of the real world. Congrats for including the past due bills with your other debt.

Hi Mel, I am pretty sure everyone has had some type of debt in their life, so it is nothing to be ashamed about. Have you ever thought of talking to a bank and amalgamating all your debt into one payment, that way you are only paying one interest amount which will save you money and you won't feel so overwhelmed. We did it years ago when we were living on one wage and had a car repayment and a maxed-out credit card, After we did this we chopped up the credit card, and now all I have is the Coles card which I repay before interest is added. 😘 It was wonderful to hear you again!!!

Yes 10 bucks a week is nothing until you need the money to pay for food for your kids to eat. Top priority. I’ve been there Mel,more going out than what’s coming in. Being behind with everything from rent and all utilities bills. Borrowing money from my parents ( which was never really paid back) Eating one meal per day ,or leftovers from crap meals or what the kids left. , for years. that was in the very early 80s when my kids were babies Thankfully we have never had credit cards . Times got millions bettter but now in Uk prices, cost of living etc has been horrendous and everyone is suffering . Do we heat or eat. That’s what it’s come to. As someone who like yourself suffers from depression,anxiety and panic attacks,makes me wonder how long will I take it before something drastic happens. Makes me wonder,is it worth it? Good for you! Does it feel better to have it written down and less of a mental load? Or is it more confronting? Are you able to do a balance transfer of the cc to a no interest loan? What is your strategy going forward? Are you going smallest to largest total, or largest to smallest interest rate?
@MySemiSortedLife
@MySemiSortedLife Год назад
Not gonna lie - it was like a bit of a kick in the guts when I saw the big number - but once I started to work out a plan it felt really achievable. My strategy is to get all the little amounts cleared... then snowball it I guess... smallest to largest?? I'm not sure. I just mostly need to stop spending.

Oh those pesky children and all their needs! Why cant they just run naked and forage for food?!?!?!?😂 Seriously - you have taken the first few steps: 1 - 'Owning' it (so hard) 2 - Making a 'do-able' plan 3 - Setting up auto-pay (so no more late fees!!!) For inspiration, I highly recommend the 'No Spend Challenges' posted in 'A Hoarder's Heart' videos - she has caught up, become (and remains) debt free - she even shares cute graphics you can use to visualize your progress Best of luck to you on this journey - its a tough one (I speak from experience)

I'm really surprised at your interest rates. My credit cards are like 26.99% APR. And anything overdue typically adds fees and possibly percentage interest above that.
@MySemiSortedLife

Yeah - it's on a payment arrangement thing - I think that's why they're so small.... if I take cash out from the cards then it's like 20+%

@@MySemiSortedLife When and as things slow down for you a kiss, you've got enough room to breathe, and have reduced enough stress to think - Start working on little measures to reduce some of these bills. Realize that you may not see a steep decline (or even a wibble in a line chart, shorter bar, etc..) but that a little here and there on say the electric bill will add up in time and with the all predictable future rate increases. For some reductions it may require some "investment purchases" such as LED light bulbs over CFL and incandescents; buy a few each pay so that the usage savings begin to pay for the next purchase. Also explore what is called "ghost energy", attempt to reduce it, and maybe even invest in surge protecting power strips so you can completely power down clusters of electrical devices and appliances. If you can see gaps of light around exterior doors and/nor under (and around) the garage doors begin exploring weather stripping solutions; there are many and you do want to think about what would be best. Longer term are what are called "window dressings" (curtains, drapes, blinds, valances and box valances, and roller shades of different t types and designs). These take an R-value, hardware, aesthetic, and cost considerations. Check out your local Re-Hab and thrift stores for potential hardware; check out yard sales and thrift stores for potential drapes, curtains, and valances. Often what protects the interior from the cold will also protect it from the heat and the less you need to use heat or a/c, the lower your electric costs. Still, some decades ago we (ok i) established a rule and that is the heat does not go in until folks are wearing at least long pants, long sleeves, socks, and some type of foot covering even if flip flops and California Beach wear are in style.

From what I'm seeing....You've got a fair amount of cash flow mandatorily directed at "catch up" in the next couple of pays or fortnights. While its not part of the Dave Ramsey plan, as soon as you've a kiss of a cash flow break I would be putting some extra balance paydown on both the @$6k and also the @$7k asap to get thier amount owing far enough below the limits to prevent overage fees. (Its part of that add no more debt tenant.) And then take a second look at what to tackle next. For myself, I would be taking an approach to try to minimize monthly minimum payments. This may take some hopscotching around every so often. While it is only @$5 minimum payment saving payoff, once you're "safe" from overage fees on the 2 cards it might feel good to wipe that @$76 phone bill item off the list. IF your carrier will allow you to pay off self selected individual bills.
@MySemiSortedLife
@MySemiSortedLife Год назад
Yes - you're so right - nothing a little creative accounting to get it down. I have just reduced my phone bill by over $150+/month by going prepaid and paying $100/month - but that $100/month now pays for 6 services (instead of 2) - including one for my mum (it's nice to help her a little...) and both the highschoolers and eventually the littles when they get bigger. I'm def keen to clear the little amounts off of the bill if my carrier will let me - as soon as the catch up is made...

It’s this payment thing where you buy something, get it straight away - but spread the payment for it over 4 payments two weeks apart. So. While I wouldn’t buy 1 x $100 item - I will buy it if it’s “only” $25 every two weeks! 😂 it adds up. Clearly.

@MySemiSortedLife

Oh I don’t know why I said that amount. It’s not entirely accurate. It’s what I get clear into my bank account every two weeks - but I also have a salary sacrifice card and the family tax benefit and my husband’s income. So. It isn’t even remotely accurate in the full sense. Sorry. I will clarify in the next video.
