None of us are perfect and that's ok! Also wearing weird things for cosplay isn't always the most comfortable and that is also ok and totally normal! I really hope this video was helpful for you (and that it all made sense... I feel like I had trouble explaining my point, so I kind of rambled a lot, but I hope it all got across ok). Feel free to share your own experiences, be it in the comments or even in your own videos or photo posts to keep the conversation going. 😊🙌🏻#perfectlyimperfect

I often get discouraged from doing cosplays I want to try due to how self conscious I can get about my body. I'll find something cute or fun and then immediately think of how much skin will show or how tight it'll be and I get way too into my head about how bad it'll look. I also tend to get discouraged when a cosplay is a bigger project, I'm basically a novice when it comes to sewing and making props so nothing ever turns out nearly as good as I want it too. But I'm learning, I'm learning how to get better at making my cosplays. I'm getting better about venturing out of my comfort zone and learning to be ok with myself and how I look even though it's still a struggle sometimes.

That's why I started cosplaying and at least for me it helped with my self hatred. And for modesty, there are tons of characters that have a modest outfit or can be modified to be more modest. Disney princesses are also utsually modest, albeit a bit expensive. Wear what you feel comfortable in first then start stretching your boundaries is my advice.

It’s ok to feel daunted by a bigger project. Break it down into smaller parts and that tends to help. I’d you’re sewing if you don’t have to sew the whole think in one go. I’ve been known to sew a bodice then come back a couple days later and do the sleeves then a week later work on the skirt. set yourself up a list and a timeline with plenty of wiggle room and you’ll do fine. It also helps to make or have a couple cosplay friends so you can motivate and reassure each other.

If you feel disgorged with cosplaying and sewing, you should try making a kimono. It’s pretty easy because there are a lot of straight ish stiches, you don’t need to use stretch, and it’s flattering on all body types. Just doing a kimono version of your favorite character is really fun. Especially if it’s a well known fandom like bnha or dangonrompa

I have cosplays like that too were i'm so worried that I looked bigger in the cosplay than the character looks. Now I know that anyone can cosplay any character no matter what, but I was still worried that people would call me out for being a little bigger. I hate my weight and I try all I can to better myself but I'm at the point where with my weight if I go any lower its considered unhealthy. Slowly I'm getting more comfortable with it which is a good thing! One other uncomfortable cosplay/crazy things I've done for cosplay is stacking push up bras. Let's face it, some characters have larger proportions than most people. Two of my cosplays, Lucy Heartfilia and Junko Enoshima, are two cosplays I've done this for. I'm a lot smaller than them and the cosplay just didn't fit right without the extra push. Stacking two bras did it and made it look good in photos and while at the conventions. By the end of the day I felt so uncomfortable and had indentations from the bras on my skin! Maybe that wasn't a great idea...
@Froggy309
@Froggy309 4 года назад
Hey so just a thing about Junko, shes actually only an A (or maybe a B, I know shes quite small) cup. I know a lot of cosplayers, including myself, make sure to really accentuate her boobs but that's super inaccurate to her character so maybe this will make you feel like you don't have to do the double pushup bra thing with her (even though you shouldn't because that's super unhealthy!)
@Ash_NuggTato
@Ash_NuggTato 4 года назад
That doesnt mean your chest area has to be the same as the character though, i wanna cosplay as taiga but im not small like her and im thicker
@nanamiharuka3269
@nanamiharuka3269 4 года назад
I could also recommend contouring your chest area or other tricks drag queens do to accentuate that area. Also I know looking at cosplayers who are my size or aren’t the size of the characters owning their cosplays like @mahou_melon helps me a lot with my own body image!

There are a few Victoria secret bras that have an absurd amount of padding. That'd probably be more comfortable than putting on three bras.

Thank you! This needed to be talked about! We look so happy in out photos that people don't really see the "full picture" of what's happening. I am good enough at faking a smile that some people think I'm pretending to be disabled....or I use mobility aids for show?... or some weird kind of publicity stunt? Guys, we're all in pain and we are all uncomfortable and I can assure you that's the honest truth. We are going to focus on the positive and show you the positive because that makes us happy, but it does not make the negative insignificant.

I remember I once went for a walk in my Toga cosplay. It was around a pond in behind our backyard so I didnt think people would be there. Well, we were walking past the pier and this dad and his daughter were staring at me and whispering. I'm pretty sure they POINTED at me. I was so sad and tried to hide that from my family the rest of the walk. It was so embarrassing.

I kind of needed a little video like this. I'm currently working on an Hazbin Hotel Alastor cosplay. Before this, I had only cosplayed characters from Undertale and Deltarune, which are pixelated games so the details are up to the player to make up. I was constantly thinking "Oh, this part isn't accurate enough, this other person did this part better than me, blah blah blah" and I just needed a little reminder that cosplay isn't about being perfect! It's about having fun, and creating things that make you happy! In fact, all those little things that aren't "perfect" make your cosplay more unique! So thanks for the little confidance boost! I hope this video brings others some more confidance too!

Especially because you are a cosplayer I and a lot of people look up to. And then I think: Okay, even you don't feel always comfortable in your cosplays and I'm not alone with that feeling. The first time I wore body paint it was to school for Halloween, and I had a panic attack in the car on the morning because it was also my first time wearing a wig and body paint, I didn’t know it would be so uncomfortable and I have sensory processing issues so the rubbing of the wig and the pound of blue face paint, I made my mom drop me off at the mall across the street so o could walk in the cold enough to calm down. im not anywhere near confident in my bosy. i have a hard time losing weight (i'm bigger) and my skin's always breaking out in pimples and sores. so doing cosplays that aren't like... entire suits of armor or something are extremely hard for me. i don't like my face or my body, and i hate all of that stuff so much. mirrors and photos kind of make me feel sick, you know? hearing these stories are extremely helpful, and i had a good cleansing cry while watching this. your story about megcules really resonated with me, too-- my last convention had a super similar story. my costume ended up with some crunched things and problems with the outfit and i felt miserable all day. you've given me a lot of reassurance to try and remake all those problem spots and stuff when i get the chance and just... try and be nicer to myself. it's incredibly appreciated.

Wearing an entire cosplay: wigs, shoes, hair, makeup, outfit, etc. can feel so uncomfortable. I was tasked in my X-men group to make Jean Grey, my favorite, and I got invited to a party in a major city where I got to represent her while the new Dark Phoenix movie was coming out and even placed in an X-men cosplay contest. After the event I had gained some weight and after trying to put the suit on to fix a couple things the butt-seams popped and I couldn't get the thing over my hips now. Cue me getting more invites to more events as her and I had to turn them down because I couldn't fit into the costume without my thighs and butt ruining it for me and I didn't have the money or time to make another. x_x

Thank you for talking about body confidence! I’m also extremely self conscious about my stomach and it has ruined certain costumes for me because I hated how my stomach looked in photos. I would always look at other cosplayers and assume that they were confident because how couldn’t they be, they all looked so stunning! The fact that most people feel insecure about some part of their body makes it feel like less of a big deal, and an easier thing to deal with!

I feel that, man. I’m really self conscious of my body like 85% of the time. I’m rather chubby, and I recently figured out I’m non-binary, so even if my hips are not really that accentuated, my chest is larger than I wish it was. I recently went to a con as Uraraka from BnHA and after putting the uniform skirt on I started feeling particularly self aware of how obvious the roundness of my belly looked (It wasn’t that obvious but I still felt insecure about it). Also there was a point early on in the con when I did a strange move and my wig nearly snatched, so it didn’t really look good. It was way too obvious it was a wig and it looked really messy. I have next to no experience with makeup, so it didn’t really look that good either. I felt really self conscious about it all, but overall I had a really nice time. I even made a new friend! (It had been a while since I made a friend at a con lol)

thank you so much for posting this video. it must have been really hard to open up about all of this, but it's so important that you did. as a young cosplayer just starting out, i really needed to hear that i'm not the only one struggling with the amplified self-consciousness that comes from wearing certain cosplays. i love myself and am confident in my body 90% of the time, but i've only ever worn clothes that have complimented my body type. and because of that, i've felt a ton of discomfort with some of the cosplays i've done. i just recently did my first skin-tight cosplay (ladybug from miraculous ladybug), and for the first half of the time i was wearing it at the convention, i was so anxious about my stomach not looking flat enough and me potentially having a double chin in pictures. this showed in my posing - that i was lacking the confidence to really portray that character. then, there was this incredibly sweet person who told me that i was their canon ladybug. they complimented me a ton, asked for a photo, and exchanged contact info with me. after that, i started to feel so much better about wearing something that was so far out of my comfort zone. of course you shouldn't let other people's opinions control the way you feel about yourself, that's not the message of this - the message is that what might seem like just a simple compliment to you, could actually make someone feel so much better. be kind, and go out of your way to say something nice to someone, even if you don't think they need it - because more likely than not, they do.

That person who looks super confident might not be feeling it. This is also a reminder to me that compliments are nice. That's such a great idea! From the point of view of an 'experienced begginer', I think that it is super important to be proud of what you make, especially if it is not perfect. Nothing so tight that I can't breathe, but a properly laced corset can just smooth without being as constricting as a shaper (which I can't usually wear because they give me panic attacks most of the time). This came out at a really good time for me, as I'm currently considering a cosplay that is well... Very revealing. I've been putting it off for almost 5-6 years. I'm so excited to wear it, but I'm also very worried about my stomach as well. Also you're Daisy is gorgeous!!! I've been in love with Daisy and peach as a kid, and LOVE seeing them cosplayed. Especially on some of their other outfits. You make an amazing Daisy 😍

I did my first photoshoot with a cosplay that shows my midsection (Little Devil Hanayo to be specific) which I've always been SUPER self-conscious about. I'm not shaped like a typical 'girl', so showing off my stomach was always something I struggled with in cosplay. But I booked the shoot and just got back my raw photos and am so happy I was with how they turned out. There were definitely some photos I went against because they showed too much stomach, but most of them turned out so beautiful and I'm so glad that I did the shoot. Very excited to post them for Valentines Day 💕💕

Thank you for sharing!! I really appreciate your honesty. I am also suuuuper self concious of my stomach. The first time I cosplayed as Ladybug in her skin tight suit I was fine until after lunch. My stomach had a little pouch that was obvious whenever I sat down. My next cosplay is going to be a Gerudo outfit from Legend of Zelda and I've convinced myself that I would wear that until I've consecutively did ab work outs. It's nice to know I'm not the only one with insecurities while cosplaying 🙆🏾‍♀️ Love you Meg cosplays, they are so gorgeous! Cant imagine how heavy those wigs are!

This is very helpful. I honestly took a long long break from cosplaying because I didn't lik many things about myself. But, I need 2 rethink about wat I am doing & how 2 become that character, rather than worrying about things I don't lik. Sure there's going 2 b things I would wish I used 4 a costume, but....it feels lik a huge hobby just 2 play dress up. I could b wrong, I may b wrong, but the next time I pick up my sewing scissors, I want 2 reunite with my 9 year old self & make the next cosplay, 4 fun & 4 the enjoyment, because I love making things & I love the feeling of having fun with dressing up as these many characters.

Girl I’m the same with my big tummy. Mine mostly sticks out in my Spider-Man Far From Home cosplay. I’m also uncomfortable about my thighs as well. I got a Chiaki Nanami cosplay and even tho I’m happy to finally have a cosplay of her I don’t like the idea of my thighs in her high stockings and that makes me super self conscious. (I use dark nylons instead) also the fact that the skirt puts a bit of pressure on my tummy it’s also not comfortable. But I love my Chiaki the best. As well as my UA Uniform with the skirt I do love the skirts even tho I’m really unhappy with my tummy and thighs. Thanks Anya I think everyone needs to hear this. 🐼🌸💜

It’s so wonderful to hear you talk about this subject For me, I’d say my worst experience was my cyber Nozomi because I’d been wanting the vinyl version for so long but when I got it it didn’t fit (I mean what was I expecting, it only comes in two sizes of which I had the smaller size) but I didn’t think it’d be so bad because it was only an inch smaller and I figured with the corset back it’d fit. It just barely fit, but my boobs were pretty much spilling out the top and I couldn’t wear a bra due to the built-in padding so I was dangerously close to a nip slip. My wig bangs looked so terrible that I hate every single photo I got. And it wasn’t comfortable too because I’d accidentally bought the wrong kind of shapewear (I needed to wear shapewear underneath or else I risked it getting stuck to my skin) so it had boning and I can’t stand boning because it always digs into my ribs. So yeah, cosplay I’d wanted to do for so long and not a single good photo of it. But I’m planning to get it altered so hopefully once I alter it, I can get it to fit me how it’s supposed to, and modify it to suit my needs so that I can truly enjoy this cosplay I’ve wanted to do

Thank you so much for posting this video. I'm also very self conscious about me stomach and I have shied away from doing cosplays that have tighter outfits. This year I'm planning on wearing a body suite for one of my cosplays and I'm very nervous about it. Your video made me feel better and realize that I'm not the only one struggling with these thoughts.

End of last year I cosplayed a character I wasn't super comfortable with cosplaying just because of the amount of skin the cosplay would show but a friend really wanted me to and all the ideas we had to do with it sounded so fun so I did it anyway. There were times I was uncomfortable in it, obviously, I'm not going to put it on and instantly be okay but I did have fun in it and I got a ton of compliments and while I'm still going to be nervous about cosplays that show a lot of skin, I know it won't be as bad as I expect it to be. ....This wasn't necessary, I know but....

My main problems that I get with my cosplays tend to be that I end up tying everything too tight, which can make breathing rather uncomfortable. It's all worth it to get the waist look I want though.

I often feel uncomfortable because of how skinny I am. There is basically no shape to my body so I feel I can't wear tight cosplays without looking like a noodle, and I often feel like I only look good as child characters because of it. I would love to have your figure, you always look stunning.

I have two cosplays that I have to be really conscious about due to health issues. I have a heat intolerance so it can get tricky when you really want to be a character that fits more with winter and it's summer. My Trevor Belmont was really fun... But I ended up getting heat exhaustion due to the fact that there are so many layers. Luckily I brought multiple options to change into so I was okay afterwards. I also cosplay Meg and any wig can cause me to overheat, but that wig is a true nightmare. My friends and I had to plan it out to be like "Okay this is when I need help taking this off." I was expecting the weight and heat, but I did not expect to feel my neck start to hurt. I was in the middle of taking pictures and having a good time and my neck did this little click that my friend heard and she had to help me hold up the wig long enough to walk back to the hotel. But yeah, long stories short: be aware of your comfort level. I love that you are making videos on this.

Thank you for sharing something that needs to be said. I feel you about getting self conscious about your body. I felt the same exact thing when I cosplay Ladybug. I ended up wearing a shape tank top to cover up my stomach. Yeah... not a fun idea when your on your period at AX in the dead of LA summer heat. Still had tons of fun wearing it though.

One cosplay insecurity of mine is that I have no idea how to do makeup, and I'm super nervous and anxious to ask people for help. I always see characters that I want to cosplay and get super motivated to do so. But then realize that my face is gross and I have no idea how to make it better. So I usually end up talking myself down from wanting to cosplay that character. ಥvಥ

Cosplay is for everybody, but we should NOT let that be an excuse for obesity/ anorexia or any unhealthy lifestyles. Being healthy is what we need to strive for, and we need to make sure we don’t enable unhealthy lifestyles to make a person just “feel better” emotionally. Health is important, we MUST remember this.

Both of my big body confidence worry cosplays happened in the same year. Anime Detour 2010: I had decided that I would do the Vastolord Ichigo before I retired from him as a character. This meant I'd be wearing nothing more than a mask, a white zentai suit, and a pair of ripped up hakama pants. I was a little soft around the middle, too much time in the kitchen, not enough in the gym, so I was a little worried about wearing something skintight. I figured I'd end up looking like an uncooked sausage. But, as one of the organizing members of our Bleach group, I felt like I had to go big or go home. Any time I was stopped for a picture, or during the group photoshoot, I was so mindful of my posture and my stomach that I actually thought I was going to strain my back trying not to look fat. Definitely didn't help that all of the other guys wearing open/no shirts were jacked as hell. But, people loved the costume (complete with severed Ulquiorra arm) and in the end, I had a really great time in the costume, despite myself. Anime Iowa 2010: I'd started shaving my head after Detour, and as such, had a whole new set of cosplays (and cosplay problems) Agent 47, UBCS Mercenary, and Madarame Ikakku. This would be the first time I'd be in a large public place after going chrome-dome, and I was really worried about everything: Is my head too shiny? Does anyone think my head shape is weird? Why am I trying to be seen in public like this? Despite the fact that I'd been planning these cosplays for 3 months, I was so nervous about executing them. Which was why my Friday was 47. I was comfortable in the suit, despite the August heat, like a little cocoon of 'pay attention to the snappy clothes, not the goofy cue-ball'. Got into a three-way duel with a Deadpool and a Hit-Girl, the self-conscious voice fading away enough to have a good time. Saturday was Umbrella Corporation day, so I pretty much hid behind my gas mask all day, and got someone to paint the Umbrella logo on the back of my head. Sunday, though, was a self-conscious double-whammy. In the rush of packing, I had apparently forgotten to shove Ikakku's top into my bags. So, I had two options: call it a loss and disappoint the rest of the group that had traveled down to Iowa with us by not getting into costume, or take a few strips of white and black cloth and go with the 'the last fight destroyed my shirt' look. This meant that I had both the bald head and pale, chubby ginger insecurities rolling *hard* . But, a promise is a promise, and the Hozukimaru prop my friend had made for me needed to be showcased. That, and I was really looking forward to doing the Lucky Dance during the photoshoot. I ended up being the Lucky one, though, because it turned out to be about 110°F during the shoot, and everyone else was head to toe in black (except for the dude in the Kon suit) so they're all drenched in sweat while I'm just beading at the brow a bit. A few of the photos really showed off my belly and the man-jubblies I'd developed, but I took some solace in the fact that I was the only Ikakku there, and got to lead all the guys in the shoot through the Lucky Dance. Took a picture for the Tri-Force Project later that day that actually looked pretty good, too. For both, though, I felt like I had to make sure no one saw the struggles I was going through, and in doing so actually boosted my confidence quite a bit. I no longer buy clothes 3 sizes too big, and I can signal aircraft with the glint off of my head. And that's the way I like it. Learn to love yourself, because a lot of the 'flaws' you may see in yourself aren't actually flaws, they're features, you just gotta figure out how to use them.

I'm a bit above the average height (5"10/11) so I don't buy women's cosplay or any clothes at all online. Because it's either too short or the right length really baggy, so most of my cosplays are made from clothes I'd wear otherwise.im kind of self conscious because I know it's not canon
