I was able to ride with Lael Wilcox for 4 hours on her Around the World ride and I can say for sure those side pockets can hold massive amounts of food. At 20 mph she pulled a burrito out and ate it on her aero bars.

For a didactic point of view, I think that It's refreshing to add moments like this in the videos. More of it, please 🙏

Excellent review as always. I use the Restrap Aerobag and the one thing I would love to have is those little side pockets. Well done Revelate, well done.

Otherwise a good piece of kit. Can’t fault my Restrap Aerobag although the elastic strap-on on top isn’t all that useful.

I think that a significant advantage of this design is the extra clearance that it gives the shifters on drop bar bikes. I have a Salsa EXP Anything cradle & it is difficult to cinch it tight enough to get clearance to change gears.

I don't have aerobars. I don't want aerobars. My neck is too old and I am too slow to really get the benefits they impart, but this is a really cool bag even if I don't need it.

Without using them the Cyclite is my favorite. Love the mounting options on top and the aerodynamics.

Agree. These look super sloppy compared to the Cyclite one.

I own the Cyclite. I do love it but 5L feels generous in its listed capacity. Feels more like 4. I've also used a compressible 14L dry sack that compresses down to no bigger than either of these options with my entire sleeping kit inside. Attached it to the aero bars in a similar fashion to the Revelate with some Voile straps. Very reliable and great capacity but you don't get the handy side pockets for burritos! But it's great we've got so many aero options for aero bars now.

Lidl came out with this product like 2-3 years ago. I used it on my aero bars for the GAP/C&O trail.

I mainly use my aerobars for comfort but as a small rider they are also usefull to hold up my ortlieb handlebar bag with an extra velcro strap (gives me maybe another 5cm of clearance and keeps it from dropping down to my tire if it ever gets really bumpy).

For sure, I think the price might be a product of the current market, not many options, but those options are all somewhat expensive.

Interesting. I use a front rack on a thru axel and have tied down 2 bags on top to that height. I felt like it was hard to manuever through wind with a bag that high and wide. I think there might be better shaped objects that would better suit an areo bar mount but its interesting surface area to consider for sure.

I've lived without side pockets and bungee for 60 years and what you don't know can't let you suffer. Maybe I'm missing something but couldn't I just strap a dry bag directly to the aerobar, saving me 160 USD for pizza and beer?

This is what I've done for two long tours now. I have a 14L compressible dry sack that compresses down surprisingly small with my sleeping kit inside.

Years ago when I worked at a bike shop, an older gentleman came in and asked for "arm rests." It took us awhile to figure out he meant aerobars. Ever since I have just called them arm rests since that is how a lot of people use them.

The capacity sounds amazing, however I love having my head unit and light positioned on aero bridges attached to the aero bars. This works great with the bag from Cyclite and should be fine with all the others, except this one.
@revelatedesigns7380
@revelatedesigns7380 Месяц назад
We had to play a little bit of chicken vs egg on this. Yes it will mess with some electronics mounts but figured there are a ton of available options or ways to modify / add a mount. Did not want to limit the function of the pockets or top access as there are so many different ways to setup an endurance cockpit.

Is this the same bag that Lael Wilcox is using for her round the world record attempt? Anyway, we need more of aero bar bags. I'm using a poor man's DIY version using a dry bag with compression bands, which can be a bit tricky sometimes.

It’s not, it requires an aero bar to be extended out quite a bit.

Looks like the one Wilcox is using right now. Anyway - I like it but the design of the harness going on top of the bars fucks with where I mount my Wahoo, so, it's a pass. Still think the Restrap design is the best (yet).

Who knew I'd be here to experience an incipient psychotic episode about a fly 🙂. Seriously, made me laugh out loud in the middle of your normal good content.
@jameswong391
@jameswong391 Месяц назад
I just wished the harness was more open on the top rather than the bottom - seems like we won't be able to use our TT accessories anymore so it's not only trading places with mounts/accessories - but relegating computers etc to the difficult to view position under the TT armrests. Seems there was a reason Lael is running a Ruckus TT bar mount for accessories - but seems a convoluted solution to an unnecessary problem
@revelatedesigns7380
@revelatedesigns7380 Месяц назад
Aero-bars and mounts are very nuanced. We figured there is always going to be a computer mounting solutions that can be rigged and went with the top mount to really optimize the function of the bag / harness.

@@revelatedesigns7380 Thanks for the info, could the top fabric however not fulfil the same structural function if it were a bunch or straps, or had a few gaps in for bar clamp access? As I have to say - I love the product otherwise and its sibling the pronghorn. A last thing, I'd also try and push 8L if I could - as worst case I can cinch down if it's overkill
@revelatedesigns7380
@revelatedesigns7380 Месяц назад
@@jameswong391 Yes openings in the top could very well be in a version down the road. Given the bag's form factor I really hesitated making the drybag any longer than it is however.

In your 2015 aerobar setup, you mounted a crossbar from an old handlebar -- how did you attach the crossbar to the aerobars?
@BIKEPACKINGcom
@BIKEPACKINGcom Месяц назад
Cut an old carbon handlebar, sanded down the middle so it sat against the rounded aero bar, drilled a hole on each end and zip-tied-it down.

@@BIKEPACKINGcom Thanks for the info - amazing how much work zip-ties do in the world of bikepacking!

I've seen something similar done with PVC pipe, but reusing an old carbon bar is sleeker.

Hmmm.... It looks well-made, but I think I would rather have a bag that filled (almost) the entire gap between brake levers, and which used as few fasteners as possible. Jan Heine did some tests and found that these torpedo shaped bags did not help with aerodynamics, but filling that left-right gap did. I also prefer the idea of just a boxy bag that handles all the waterproofing needs, and which doesn't require me to stop to put things away. My main gripe about most bags is how they are dominated by straps and buckles and a special pocket for every little thing. Oh, and all-black is terrible -- it cooks the contents and makes it impossible to see them.
