Revell 1:72 U-Boat Type VIIc

This U-boat was originally built by my Dad several years back. somehow it got damaged, and when a project I was working on was totally ruined, my Dad gave me the challenge of restoring this model and building/distressing it anyway I wanted.
He's quite pleased with the end result of the model. And I'm glad to have finally crossed of "building a Revell U-boat" from my modeling bucket list.

I was mesmerised by the spray painting, there’s just something about it when it’s being applied, so much skill with controlling the airbrush.

Thank you, he wasn't a fan of the Sea Blue lines when he first saw them. But after the Rubber black was painted on the hull, he quickly changed his mind :)

I've had the Revell 1/72 sitting in my pile-of-shame for 20-something years now. Came looking for inspiration to finally build it...found it. I reckon a restoration must actually be harder than a straight build from a new kit. Well done.

Thanks, I hope that you have fun with the build. It's a monstrous kit to tackle, but it was a lot of fun to do. I'd do more of these in the future if I had the room to display them in. I don't know if it was harder, but it was a lot more work as far as getting it all cleaned up. Once that was done the painting and weathering (which I anticipated to be a lot or work) didn't take too much longer to complete. But all the sanding and filling and more sanding, that part of the build I nearly gave up on this project.

WOW!!! The difference between building a model and creating a work of art could not be better illustrated than this.....I imagine this is what it must of been like watching Picasso or Michelangelo create their masterpieces....well done indeed.

Great save on an old kit. I buy older and "pre-owned" kits from a couple of online sources. Some need reworking from the previous owners attempts at a build. I love what you did with this one. Very inspirational.

Great 👍! I have this kit too, I built the version of U203 which was a one toned grey color painted by Testor's "Dark Sea Grey". I have some troubles of clue the deck with the hull but it was solved.

Love the chipping. Never thought of using a rubber brush before. You did a Fantastic job on this Sub!!!!! Love It!!!!

Thanks Michael, it worked out really well, except for the sides of the boat, as the raised rivets ripped it up. But a soft eraser works really well too.

These kits were so cool and unique when they first came out. Still have one that I put together, and while it looks OK, wish I would have done a few more models before tackling such a large one.

Amazing rebuild! I have one sitting on a shelf in the garage I got from a friend after it was damaged at his place. It too needs a rebuild but most of the parts are missing so some scratch building is in order, after seeing this vid I’m quite inspired to fix the one I have. A fitting tribute to your dad's original work, well done. Can I suggest that you think about why chipping occurs in the first place - repeated use of things that damage paint, whether it be feet, ropes, tools etc. Then apply that to the lips of hatches, railings, decking that gets the most foot traffic. Especially the sides of the boat when they come alongside and get long horizontal rubs and scratches. You've got the skills already, just need some thought about the cause of wear and tear. Again, great job!

Holy Hot Damn !!!!! I was just thinking of suggesting that you should have used " Silly Putty " as a masking tool . Nice to see someone else that knows the benefit of a silicone polymer . I've been using it since it was suggested back in the 80's in " Fine Scale Modeler mag " . Great Job !!!!

Kind of you to say, but I'm still just as fumbly as ever haha. This was just a new break from the usual aircraft so I was able to try out some new ideas that were on my mind. It was a really fun project, but I don't think I can mask that much Masking Sol NEO ever again haha :)

Incredible build. Incredible weathering! Only thing- given how well used the boat seems to be, the anchor wells seem a bit clean, especially given how torn up an anchor and chain sliding and banging around on it would be. But anyways one of you best paintjobs yet!

U-boots seldom used the anchor, and, IIRC, it was snubbed up hard against stops under the deck plates to prevent it from rattling (one want ro preserve noise discipline underwater). IIRC, the specified anchor paint was the schwartzgrau used for the underwater hull. Probaly ought to be /some/ ocean "crud" up in around it--how much to depict at 1/72 is a different debate.

Thanks Burt, and I agree with you there. The only decal I used was the shield on the front of the tower. I was hoping for something with more flash, but I decided on the 2-tone blue over number and art.

Thanks Peter, I was surprised when he gave me the kit to restore. But he said that he already had the fun of building it, and won an award for it, so I could do whatever I wanted. And it was a very freeing project to play with :)

Love the music, and awesome repaint. Apparent little known fact to the majority of modelers of U Boats. The U Boats that went through detailed scrutiny by the allied navy’s. The paint used on U Boats remains a mystery today. The color is no mystery, the chemical mix is the mystery. The paint could not be scraped off. Extremely hard to sand. Held up better than any known paints. Point I am making is all rust and chips modelers put on U Boats is not true to the actual U Boats in service.

@@justinsane3909 it's a myth. The paint they use back in the WW-II times on german submarines was a mix out of rust protection and color. The steel they use was highly alloyed steel and did not rust that easy, but it will, only later and not so strong than a regular kind of steel, but there will be rust sooner or later.

It wasn't too bad before, but you definitely improved it, I built that kit in 2005 and I wished I'd taken the time to build it right, twas my first 1:72 scale submarine

I learned several techniques to apply to the Revell 1/144 scale version I am completing. Thank you. Suggestion: don't linger so long on a technique. I repeatedly scrolled forward through almost each application of paint, wash, etc. Everything that I needed to learn and understand could have been presented in half the time.

Excuse my ignorance but I'm trying to re-learn things and find new ideas. Do you have any ideas about "tide marks" up the side of vessels ? Maybe not many people would see them but they are there.
