Revell's 1/72 Avro Shackleton AEW (Full Build) 

So I tried to leave more than one thumbs up for the video however it wouldn’t let me 😁 Beautiful model and a great build. One of my favorites to rewatch. 👍👍👍👍👍👍

When I was about sixteen (1966), my older sister asked me what I wanted for a Christmas present. I said I wanted the Shackleton model made by 'Frog'. When she got to the shop, she told the salesman she wanted a model for her brother. When he asked which one, she forgot the 'Shackleton' bit and just asked for a 'Frog'. Miraculously. the correct information got through in the end.

That's one of the loveliest model aircraft I've ever seen. She's a beauty!

As a teenager we used to go on holiday near RAF St. Mawgan in Cornwall, where Shackletons were based until the Nimrods came along - fantastic planes that made an even better noise! Fantastic model, love it.

Stunning. The attention to detail is amazing and I like the fact that you narrate your builds. Lots of other modellers put a music soundtrack on them which makes it a bit impersonal.

The “Bomb bay doors” sounds like a great Indian restaurant. Going to order a Jalfrezi tonight …..

It's absolutely smashing Greg. I was on 8 Sqn in 1976, my first posting as an LAC Rigger. On Doomwatch, we had 12 of these wing tip to wingtip on the line at Lossie. Lovely Job and a great video.

Caught your comment on the masking fluid. Try putting a small piece of tape underneath. Makes removing it much easier. Nice build Greg, catch you on the next one.

In the 70s, I shared a flat with a guy who did Quality Control for Revell in Potters Bar: paid to make model kits all day! He used to bring home the plastic 'overflow' (whatever) from the machines, multicoloured irregular plastic sculptures , very arty. Jon Price, are you out there?!

Very impressive result Greg. A bit of double sided tape on the modeling mat is great for preventing the loss of very small parts, such as the navigation lights, prior to assembly.

Saw a Shackleton flying at Duxford and a wreck one at Nicosia Airport

I think you have really got this model right and a good video and build. I remember seeing Shackleton's at air displays many years ago and being told they were named after Magic Roundabout characters. I think one I saw was called Mr Rusty - not a good name for an aircraft - more like Mr Corroded. The last two I saw were about 20 years ago at the museum at the end of the runway at Gatwick, one was capable of ground running.

I had this very patch,8 screws to 4 blow job's from 8sqdn when they were stationed at Lossiemouth back in 84.

Wonderful build. Thank you so much for sharing. Loved how all the surface detail came to life with the panel wash. Superb. I like to build old Frog and Airfix kits, and I find that Tamiya Extra Thin sometimes fogs the clear parts. Does anyone else experience this or have any advice? Once again thank for the superb work you show us here.

Nice one Greg, I've got this kit and really looking forward to building it, a few years ago I got a commission job to build one of these planes but these kits were not available so I had to convert an old Frog MK3 into an AEW2 Oh boy what job that was! (Side note, The plane is in the manchester science museum and the model with the pilot)

Great build. Pity there was no bomb bay content with the kit. Revell kits always seem to be seen as a lower level than competitors but this looks like a very good kit. 👍

I debated for a while if I wanted this kit or the one from Airfix... Finally I went for the MR2. Airfix, that is... The radar dome gives this one a lot of character, though. And it's looking good despite the accuracy rumors. :-) Not so sure about the question in the thumbnail... You have to show us the other one too! ;-)

Hi Greg, great model build. I have recently purchased the Airfix version. I haven’t built a model with such detail such as panel wash and oil staining, so this will be a first for me but it’s a project I’m planning on using to escape to my garage with and escape the kids. I just wondered if there was a reason for not adding a final varnish sealant? Would this interfere with the oil wash and panel grease effect that you built up or was it just personal choice in the end? Much appreciated. Jim.

I built the airfix kit and wish I'd masked the prop tips. I used the décals but got severe case of can't be arsed itis and didn't bother doing them all. It's hanging up and looks great other than my son always points them out. Might have to do something about it one day... He's now building a Revell Top Gun F14 which is kit-shithousery on the Tamiya Sea Harrier level. They've got a bloody cheek charging £30odd quid for it...

Nice work Greg ! she's beautiful .I remember building one of these , I think it was Revell , and it was covered in huge rivets ( you could have used it for a sanding stick .), so was a mess to paint and even worse to decal . Is this a new mold ??

It looks like a Shackleton to me and yes its another great model Greg, I used to like watching them fly when I was in the ATC back in the early 80's, it was a great aircraft and another of the RAF workhorses. Like you with this model I'm getting a little frustrated trying to convert a Revell 1.48 USAF B24D into an RAF Coastal Command Liberator Mk 3a. What would you recommend to do with the raised panel lines in the model? I'm building it as a tribute to my great uncle who was 224sqn's Bombing Leader during WW2. Serving as an Observer with RAF Coastal Command and he lost his life in a flying accident on 30.10.1942. When their a/c hit a barrage balloon whilst attempting an emergency landing near Plymouth.
