Once a mild-mannered liberal, New York City architect Paul Kersey (Charles Bronson) snaps when intruders break into his home, murdering his wife (Hope Lange) and violently raping his daughter. A business trip to Tucson, Ariz., lands him a gift from a client, a revolver he uses to patrol the streets when he returns home. Frustrated that the police cannot find the intruders, he become a vigilante, gunning down any criminal that crosses his path. The public finds this vigilantism heroic.

When the producers first pitched the movie to Bronson, Bronson said "I'd like to do that." The producer said "do the movie?", and Bronson answered, "No, shoot muggers."

It's not just he wants to get revenge on criminals. His main focus is ending his own life. A "death wish", if you will. He's hoping that one night he'll be taken down and not live in misery anymore.

Un the 1970s New York was under siege by criminals. Mugging armed robbery and homicides went unsloved. With a turnstile justice system where criminals were not at fault for their actions. So light sentences were the norm. Kind of like the millennial and Genz didn't listen to the Boomer GenX and now cites are once again cesspools of humanity Charles Bronson was a Hero. He grew up poor in agricultural America. The first time he ate 3 meals a day was after he joined the Army during WW2. He severed as a nose gunner in a B17. During one flight he was severely wounded bleeding profusely. He refused to leave his post and get aid until the plane was once again safe over the English channel. His Tombstone makes no mention of his time in Hollywood. It speaks only for his love of country and family.

When I was a teen I always thought the son n law was a real wimp. I have since been more realistic and feel he was a good guy. I can't imagine having my wife go through what his wife went through, and the son n law feeling helpless and not being able to reach her. He was not a warrior, but that does not make him weak.

Crime in NYC is a hundred times worse now than it was then. Today we'd need at least a dozen more Paul Kerseys to even make a dent.

The mayor in this movie is somehow an exact doppleganger for Mayor Adams today. Both are more outraged by self-defense than the criminals they need to defend themselves from.

Death Wish caused quite the stir back in the day and Bronson was huge back in the 60s and 70s...especially overseas. For more Bronson: The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, and The Dirty Dozen where he was part of great ensemble casts. For more starring roles: The Mechanic, Mr Majestyk, Breakout, and Hard Times

"The Mechanic" is a great movie. One movie you might agree should be on the list is "Death Hunt" which also starred Lee Marvin. I met Charles Bronson in 1976 at Campions Store in Hanover NH (it's not far from his farm in Vermont). He wasn't chatty, but he was polite, and since I was only 11 any conversation wouldn't have been interesting for him.

Enjoyed your reaction to Death Wish. Yep, back in the 70's & 80's, crime in New York was really bad. It's not good now either. I'm a Charles Bronson fan. His persona in his films is not of a guy that talks smack or tries to be large and in charge. Instead, he's the strong silent type that carries a big stick, and will not hesitate to woop someone with it. Other good Bronson films: The Mechanic(which was re-made a couple of years ago starring Jason Statham. Good remake.). Also good, is Red Sun starring Bronson and Toshiro Mifune.

In the seventies usually only SWAT teams which were a new concept had bulletproof vests as standard issue and police vans weren't armored some just had armored panels at certain points.. That didn't start to change until criminals started to outgun the cops.

You can also react to Charles Bronson's The Evil That Men Do, Death Wish 3 (the best one in my honest opinion) and also Kinjite. Most of these movies maybe a tad messed up but it's really entertaining but highly intriguing. I wish people would react more to his movies he's an icon in my eyes. It would be very funny and interesting to see people react to his movies because of the graphic nature and explicit content.

18:41 Not 100%, but I'm pretty sure that's Saul Rubinek. It looks like him, and it says so in the IMDb trivia for Death Wish V (he is in that movie as well), but I can't find any other confirmation of that. This movie is not in his IMDB filmography, and he's not credited in the movie itself.

Re: Dad usage It was pretty common in the 70s and before to refer to your MIL or FIL as “mom” and “dad.” It was to show respect and some degree of familiarity. My mom called her MIL “mom” even though her own mother was still living. But the script did overkill the usage in that early scene.

I too watched this movie about a week ago for the first time. The Tucson trip and connection to the guy who wrote the book and inspired the movie is important and the realtor gun advocate was the man who played Angel in Rockford Files is important and my favorite part in this movie. You'll see it sets off Charles Bronson when he returns home. A lot of his movies are on Prime and I've enjoyed every one of them. Trump in 2015 during his legendary campaign made reference to this character and movie.

The original is meant to be a serious critique on the uncontrollable crime in liberal cities (remember, it wasn’t until Giuliani became mayor that New York started improving, because Giuliani enforced the law). While the sequels become exploitation films (I still love Death Wish 3 and 4), this, and not Jodi Foster’s “The Brave One” or the Bruce Willis remake of “Death Wish”, which gets guns, gun laws, and gun culture so wrong, it’s sad, this is the movie to watch.

I love this movie, don't agree with everything about it, they set up some blatant strawmen in it, but that doesn’t take away from my enjoyment. By Death Wish 3, it gets really crazy and I’m all in for it. But I really don't care for the movies past the third one. Death Wish 3 is the last of the films directed by the original director of the first movie. It's also the first in the series produced after the franchise was purchased by the notorious Cannon Films. These movies were never big budget projects but after the third one the movies feel cheap rather than low budget, there is a difference. It doesn't matter how crazy they get if it all feels so poorly done and just stupid. So I recommend the series up to Death Wish III but stopping there. I know there was a remake with Bruce Willis simply called, again "Death Wish", but I haven't seen that one yet. However, there was another (albeit loosely) remake with Jodie Foster called "The Brave One", it was pretty good, that movie I do recommend. There's also the 1993 Michael Douglas movie "Falling Down" which has no connection to the Death Wish series, but still it feels somewhat like what Death Wish would be if it was made in 1993. I highly recommend that one. Vincent Gardenia played the police inspectors. He is a great character actor. He's been in some movies but he's been in *A Lot* of television. He had a great recurring character on one of the best sitcoms of all time, "All in the Family". He was one of Archie Bunker’s neighbors. He was also in the movie "Little Shop of Horrors" and great in that as well. Best Regards!
