Universal Studios Orlando parks have a reputation for not being very fat friendly -- that really isn't accurate and in this series of videos I am on a quest to show you what it is like to try each Universal ride from the perspective of a fat person and I'll share details for tall people and I even have some accessibility information as well as sharing the perspective of an Autistic person and some details for those with epilepsy.
My goal is to take the fear out of enjoying Universal parks if you are plus size, tall, or have mobility or sensory concerns. I want to show you all the things you can do and enjoy so you can make the most of your vacation with your family and friends.
I show you the test seat, share tips on boarding the ride, explain the warnings for those with sensory concerns, talk about concerns for those with mobility challenges, describe the queue and ride and also share details you will want to know if you have epilepsy, autism or motion sickness. I try to cover everything you need to know to make the best decision possible regarding this ride.

Pammie, because of you, this year will be my 3rd year going to the parks. I sat on the sidelines at Six Flags parks for years because I didn't fit in the rides. I worked hard to lose weight and finally fit in the rides at Disney and Universal. Had I known years ago that I would fit, I would have been going to Florida for years and years. WE are going again next week because of you.. I am having the time of my life at 51 years of age! Thank you so much for your hard work, willingness to be vulnerable, heart to share with us and a joy to watch. I hope to see you in the parks so I can at least wave to you and buy you a drink. May God bless you always.

This makes me super happy. Making videos costs lots of time, energy, and money...plus I use at least 50% of my vacation time to researching, filming and editing -- but it is fun for me and it makes me so glad to know I am putting a bit of positivity out there and hopefully helping people along the way. More than anything -- notes like this from viewers is the biggest reward. Thank you for taking the time to share this with me. I don't know if you can imagine how much this means to me. Blessings to you and your family.

It's kind of amazing to see the differences in attitude between Universal and Disney. Universal doesn't seem to think their rides through as well as Disney does. Can't keep your stuff with you, can't be overweight, or over tall, lots of stairs, too dark...I dunno, just seems like they're less inclusive. Not to mention the half mile walk just to get into the park!
@PammiePlusParks

Universal's target market are parents of no more than mid 40's with kids who are tweens to teens and also young adults 20 - 35. That is who the business gears itself towards. It's not that they are trying to exclude anyone -- they don't market themselves as being great for people of all ages, sizes and abilities. They don't put out ads saying everyone single person regardless of age or abilities will be able to go on every ride -- check out their ads -- all people under 45 who are slim and meet the minimum height requirements who are of average adult height. An example -- Forever 21 doesn't carry clothes for my 80 year old mom in her sizes and styles -- doesn't mean they are purposely trying to leave her out of the shopping mall experience -- just that they have a target audience and she's not in it. Universal isn't trying to prevent families, tall people or large people or older people from enjoying theme parks -- they just cater to a different audience. That being said -- I've been treated very well at the Universal Parks and always have a marvelous time. I might not fit on all the rides but the once I do are marvelous.

It has been probably almost twenty years since I’ve been to Universal and I’m really glad you touched on those lockers, because those seem to have changed in all that time. I remember needing to use your right thumb on fingerprint scanners to get into the lockers but my dad, who lost most of his right hand in an accident, was unable to use them. I feel like most people wouldn’t bother even mentioning the lockers, let alone give specific details on how to use them, so thank you so much for your continued courtesy and thoroughness!

I am a 5’8 woman who weighed 330 at the time of riding this ride. I also carry most of my weight in my belly. I was able to fit, but just barely. It was snug and I did not feel comfortable. That being said, it is definitely a fun (and fast!) indoor rollercoaster. If you are able to, I would recommend it!

This was my favorite ride at Universal Hollywood. I’m 5’3, 250 lbs and very bottom heavy. Size 18/20 pants and a 2X shirt. I had no issue at all with fitting on this ride.

@PammiePlusParks 4 года назад
Folks around 5'4 (or taller) who are 250 lbs or less shouldn't have any problem fitting on the standard seats for all the rides at Universal parks. But -- if you are a bit heavier or taller, the modified seats are a great option.

So i've ridden the Mummy many, many times. Most times the team members have pushed down on the restraint for one more click because i couldn't do it on my own and my friend has already sat down. I've never had them tell me they couldn't push down on the restraint. I guess it depends on who is working the line that day.
@PammiePlusParks
@PammiePlusParks 4 года назад
That is awesome that they were so helpful. Please know that assisting with restraints by pushing down on them is against policy for Team Members and we should not count on that. That being said, Universal TMs are absolutely lovely, friendly and respectful. I adore them.

@PammiePlusParks
@PammiePlusParks 4 года назад
I think you will be fine on the Harry Potter rides. Remember to ask for "Modified Seating" -- take your time boarding, sit well back in your seat, sit up tall and give it a try. All of the rides have tester seats but those seats are all the standard seats. If you fit in the standard seat -- you will be fine but if you *almost* fit in the standard tester seat -- ask for that modified seat once you are about to board.

I love these videos I wish I would have seen this before I rode this ride last year! The guy did push on my restraint and it was painful before the ride even started because of it. It happened so quick that I couldn’t even say anything before the ride started. I can attest it does hurt if it’s too tight. I’ll be back in a couple weeks so I’m glad to know they aren’t supposed to do that so I can speak up and say no. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos 💜💜
@PammiePlusParks
@PammiePlusParks 4 года назад
Never be afraid to speak up and say you are not comfortable. There is a slow point before the ride launches where you can waive your arms up in the air and let them know you are not comfortable. You always have that option when boarding a ride. I think we get paniced and think we can't say anything but we can and should.
@largol33t1
@largol33t1 4 года назад
@@PammiePlusParks I think Shanna should have spoken up. I guess the attendant wanted to make sure it didn't accidentally pop open. I've seen shocking videos of people getting violently tossed around in their roller coasters because the attendants were inattentive and didn't push the lap bar down properly. That's almost as bad as not having one as it can lead to serious injuries.

your hair and makeup always look amazing! I am so impressed. I have zero ability to do my hair and I have hooded, oily eyelids and just about every mascara and eyeliner just sort of smear off after five minutes. I've given up at this point. Your skills are incredible- you look just as gorgeous at the end of the day as the beginning!
@PammiePlusParks
@PammiePlusParks 3 года назад
Thank you so much! I very rarely ever wear a full face of makeup into the parks because I face the same challenges you do. It's usually too hot and sunny, so I will sweat off make up, plus I need to reapply sunscreen on my face throughout the day. And on top of that, I have very oily skin that cause makeup to separate and slide around my face no matter what products or techniques I employ. So, I decided my own method for looking fresh...sunscreen, tinted lip balm or long lasting lipstick with SPF, and 3 coats of waterproof mascara. That's what I am wearing in this video and almost all the videos I shoot inside the parks. I am completely talentless with hair. All I did here was start rolling a section of hair at the front of my face at the part...rolling it away from me face, picking up pieces of hair along the way, and rolling until it was far enough down that I could gather the hair up and put it in a pony tail....I did the same thing with the other side and sprayed the living daylights out of it with hair spray. No fancy technique, no pins, nothing fussy. When it is time to reapply sunscreen, I go to the ladies room to splash cold water on my face, blot it dry and reapply sunscreen and lip balm.

I was able to ride on my last trip to Orlando but I had to sit in the modified seats on the fourth row. At first I was seated on the first row and they had me and my party get up and move to the fourth row. I think I was pretty close to fitting in the regular seat but they wouldn’t help me push the restraint down. A little info, I am nearly 6’ tall, around 280 lbs and I carry most of my weight in my legs, with a small chest and moderate belly. This is my favorite ride so we rode it MULTIPLE times, I just always requested to sit on the fourth row after our first time of having to move to the fourth row.

LOL -- Girl, I totally agree with you. I gave him a nod, he saw the camera and he spent several minutes working with me to get some great shots, all while staying in character. That was so cool of him! He did not have to do that. I am always so impressed with the Team Members at Universal. Every single one of them is fun, friendly and helpful.

This is my favorite ride at Universal and I’m glad you got to ride. I’m most worried about Gringotts and Forbidden Journey. I know I’ll fit Hagrid’s because I’ve seen people bigger than me be able to ride.
@edvaira6891
@edvaira6891 4 года назад
Ash Blair Gringotts is more forgiving than Forbidden Journey...if you’re an average height guy like me (5’9”), I was able to Barely fit on Forbidden Journey at 288 lbs, but couldn’t at 295 the next trip (thankfully, for this next trip next month, I’m hovering in the low 280’s)

Thanks to the folks who replied! Yes, most people who fall into the smaller side of large/big/plus size do tend to fit everything. All the rides that may have difficult fits have tester seats out front -- make sure to give them a try before getting in line just to be extra sure the restraints will be comfortable for you.

This has nothing to do with the mummy ride but I know you have done many rides there and you ask questions about accessibility so I was wondering if you know anything about the 3D attractions for people with only one eye. I have to wear an eye patch a lot of times because I lost most of my vision in that eye, and I wanted to know if I would still be able to see the 3D images correctly?
@PammiePlusParks
@PammiePlusParks 4 года назад
You will still need to wear the glasses but you will only see in 2D. Without the glasses the screen images will be blurry ... with the glasses on, but using only one eye, you will not get the 3D effect but you will see a relatively clear 2D image.
@largol33t1
@largol33t1 4 года назад
Pammie is correct. To create 3D images, instead of one, the ride uses twin projectors aimed at the screen from different angles. One lens cancels out projector A and the other cancels out projector B. You will not see in 3D. I have a VERY lazy right eye so 3D barely works for me. The image just looks like it would appear any large movie theater screen but it won't be blurry. However, remember, you have to wear the glasses so the image will be clear.

Hi pammy. I'm about 5ft 8 and about 240lbs. Is there any rides you think I should worry about? Last time i went a while ago didnt have any issues but I am heavier than then
@PammiePlusParks
@PammiePlusParks 4 года назад
At 5'4" and between 340 yo 350 lbs, I did not fit on the Harry Potter rides, The Hulk, Dr. Doom, Rip Ride Rocket or The Mummy. At 330 lbs I fit on The Mummy, but not the other rides. But you are taller and 100 lbs less than me, so you will likely fit these rides, especially if you try the modified seats for rides that have them. Each ride has a standard size teaster seat. If you are just a tiny bit from fitting on a tester seat, ask a Team Member if they have a modified seat and give it a try. I think you will be able to fit most, if not all the rides.

This was the only ride I had a minor issue with when I visited in 2017. The ride attendant needed to push my lap bar down for 1 more click. I was 5" 7'....about 250 lbs. It wasn't a comfortable ride. I still enjoyed it.

I was about 330 lbs when I rode and I sat in one of the modified seats without issue. It was snug on the hips but the restraint was just fine. It seems the modified seats are indeed a bit more accomodating.

@PammiePlusParks
@PammiePlusParks 4 года назад
That's a great question. I don't have a firm answer but based on my experiences with other rides at Universal I would say that you can. There is gate that leads off the ride just before you board -- so if you don't want to go on this ride but you want to be with your friends and family in the queue, you should be able to. Make sure you ask a Team Member before you get in line so they can explain how you exit the line before the ride.

I know that I will not fit on Forbidden Journey but I plan to do a video just the same. I will show the tester seats and do a full tour of the queue. I will cover where you can wait for your party while they ride if you choose not to partake and I also plan to try the modified seats on the real ride -- just in case I do fit -- but if I don't fit I will give a detailed account of what to expect when you don't fit. I think I can manage to do a really good, helpful video whether or not I am able to ride.

A little disappointed that your title includes "is it fat friendly"
@PammiePlusParks
@PammiePlusParks 4 года назад
I am sorry that you are disappointed. I chose the title for two reasons -- 1. I identify as a fat person. I am not offended at being called fat and use fat as one of my physical descriptors -- in much the same way a blonde person would identify and describe themselves as blonde or a tall person would identify and describe themselves as tall. Fat is not a negative term in my world. 2. Fat friendly is a term used by many fat travelers to help quickly identify attractions, resorts and modes of transportation that work well for larger bodies. One of the reasons I make these videos is to reach as many people as possible. Lately I have found the term Plus Size was only attracting female viewers who identify as plus size because women's clothing in larger sizes is called plus size clothing. The term plus size was excluding men and people who do not identify with plus size clothing or the plus size term. I want to reach everyone -- women, men and people who identify differently. I realized I needed to switch to a term that more people would recognize and identify with that does not exclude men. I hope I will someday be able to help lift the stigma of the term fat and also help to ensure that theme parks, resorts, attractions and modes of transportation will accomodate people of many different sizes, shapes and abilities. Part of lifting that stigma is to eradicate negative associations with words like fat. I hope my explanation helps you understand my point of view and I want you to know I respect your point of view. Thank you for sharing your feedback.
