Rev. Gary Davis I used to listen to every Saturday morning on Robert Johnson's Blues show on WDET-FM! What a wonderful memory this brings back! Such natural talent!
tremendous performance by gary davis .. and understand that donovan and shawn phillips are showing great respect and awe for the reverend ,, a couple minutes into the song ,, pete gets going and lets the fellows know that they can join in .. and obviously they enjoy it with their voices and their feet tapping along .
I sat up and played all night with the Rev. after a concert, I was a concert promoter for the Seattle Folklore Society and got to meet all the great bluesmen, for which I feel eternally blessed. If you like the Rev. there's all kinds of stuff on youtube. He was a moving and powerful performer, just as down to earth as an old shoe.
Real music, inspired by real faith, by a real believer in Messiah Jesus. I had a close friend in the 60's who took lessons from Gary Davis, and he talked about his faith easily and naturally. One of the best music videos online.
The Lord is your friend. Give yourself to Him and sin don't matter anymore. It might take time to get on the straight and arrow and God knows I ain't right but every day I praise his sweet name AND I AM HAPPY. Hallelujah!
Forever grateful to Pete, for the Rainbow Quest series. Best TV ever, and without him, the world wouldn´t have this, and so many other gems of humanity.
What strikes me about these old black bluesmen apart from there amazing music is they've got style and they are some of the coolest muthers to walk the earth they just ooze laidbackness
Divine fire. That man was a conduit for mighty forces. I was privileged to meet him, shake his hand, and humbly thank him just a few weeks before he died. He still had all of his great power and when people heard him play and sing they were speechless.
I appreciate your kind words and I know they are true.though I never met man in the flesh i feel as I know him through the spirit.hes a vessel for God alright.a man flesh and blood like you and me but gods vessel.amazing how much a little humbleness can and will do.thank you Jesus
Oh, when I was out in the world of sin I had no one to be my friend Jesus came and he taken me in Glory, hallelu And he taken my feet out the miry clay He placed them up on a rock to stay I thank God that I can say Glory, hallelu O, Glory how happy I am O, Glory how happy I am My soul is washed in the blood of the lamb Glory, hallelu O, Glory how happy I am Yeah, glory how happy I am My soul is washed in the blood of the lamb Glory, hallelu I was out in darkness and I could not see Jesus came and he rescued me He claimed me and gave me a victory Glory, hallelu And one day while Jesus was passing by He set my sinful soul on fire He made me laugh and he made me cry Glory, hallelu Whoa! Yeah, glory how happy I am My soul is washed in the blood of the lamb Glory, hallelu Whoa, glory how happy I am Oh, glory how happy I am My soul is washed in the blood of the lamb Glory, hallelu When I could not understand Jesus, he give me a lending hand Led me away to the promised land Glory, hallelu Oh, well he give me a horn and he told me to blow Go in peace and sin no more He led me away to the upright shore Glory, hallelu Whoa, glory how happy I Yes! My soul is washed in the blood of the lamb Glory, hallelu Well, glory Yeah! My soul is washed in the blood of the lamb Glory, hallelu I know something that's mighty swell A sweet little story I love to tell Jesus saved my soul from Hell Glory, hallelu Oh, stand back Satan, get out of my way I don't want to hear not a word you say I'm on my way to the King's highway Glory, hallelu Well thank God I got over at last Thank God I got over at last My feet is planted in the narrow path Glory, hallelu Whoa, glory how happy I am Whoa, glory how happy I am My soul is washed in the blood of the lamb Glory, hallelu When I had no home to claim I begin to call on Jesus' name He saved me from old Satan's chains Glory, hallelu Now I'm fire-baptized and holy ghost-filled I'm out here to do my master's will I must keep going, I must keep Glory, hallelu Well, glory Whoa, glory how happy I am My soul is washed in the blood of the lamb Glory, hallelu Yeah, glory how Yeah! My soul is washed in the blood of the lamb Glory, hallelu
Davis admired Blake and rightfully so. Blake was a bit older than Davis and already famous, when Davis started performing. Davis always said he learned the most from Blake and his "sporting right hand"
As an atheist, I agree. I grew up Pentecostal and gave it up at around 16, but these beautiful old gospel songs get down deep into the bones of a man...
Less Is More, that's for sure: Voice + fingers, no more needed. A beautiful melody energized by spellbinding guitar work and delivered with genuine passion. Timeless. Name-drop Opportunity: The Rev. Gary Davis played at Elliot's Books in New Haven, CT in the early Sixties (long enough ago that smoking was still allowed -- even in a book store. I was fortunate to get a 2nd-row seat, and even more fortunate to eavesdrop on the Reverend, taking his break directly in front of me with his wife, being softly but intensely lectured about his indoor cigar smoking---possibly not for the first time =:^)---and his short, gruff replies. It was nice to get a glimpse of everyday life from someone I regarded as a musical icon and still do.
I got you sister.thats my favorite part too.just as simple as that, just by believing he saved us,we are saved, thank you Jesus!! keep on dancing sister ❤️
What you are seeing is a God given talent no doubt about it. What a wonderful gift this man had, what a wonderful man of God he was, he is with the Lord now.
I love this video so much, what a remarkable historic performance from a truly unique extraordinary and soulful musician, the banjo sounds great in the background
One man's powerful testament of pure faith on the Father's grace and inspiring this beautiful song. It's a damn near perfect message wrapped in song and lyric forms. Blessed are those who hear this and let spirituality and altruism grow in their heart. Shawn and Donovan are stunned.
And Pete won’t sing about his soul being washed in the blood while getting in the way of the preachers music and message by muddying it up and trying to make it about music when it’s about Jesus
Thank you! For those who need more songs about Jesus, I want to recommend : "Gloryland" - Surefire Bluegrass Band, Beulah Land, The Lord Is My Light,.....
Donovan and the other fellow don't look nearly as excited as I was when I first heard this. I listened to this every day for months when i first heard it.
Seeger was prolly annoying the shit out of 'em both! I mean the dude was"different". Seeger that is. I like much of what Gary Davis introduced "US" to. His style was like a taproot for modern day music in some ways.
@@chris7662 You must not be familiar with the format of this program. It was patterned after a kitchen party and the performers sat around a kitchen table with a pot of coffee and anyone was welcome to join in. We all should be so thankful to Pete and Toshi for the many great performances that they preserved for us.
The Bible says call no man father, pastor teacher or Reverand, but I be honored to have the great preacher Gary Davis as my spiritual leader ! Absolutely the best Christian blues guitarist ! God 🙏 bless you Preachers peacher the great Gary Davis
The Rev plays Miss Gibson with such skill it becomes overwhelming!!! He has a whole band playing with him, it seems almost effortless yet so complex to anyone who knows anything about playing a guitar! Words can't covey what he has going on, it is stunning.
So, Special this is! I can't help but wonder who else from yester years was like this man that, didn't make it on a recording. Wow! Clearly this man & his music is of historical importance for the ages. I'm currently not especially Happy or religious. If your watching or reading this and his other live cuts or albums ur one of us. Your Good Soul is connected to the universe. Blessed Be.
Donavan is stunned that the guy isn't just playing three chords down in first position. Imagine? he is NOT playing just G D and A...God love yah Gary Davis... your ARE the man... Pick those strings pick em hard...!
When I decided to learn guitar 30 years ago, a Stefan Grosman tab book by the Reverend Gary Davis was all they had in the library by way of tuition. In an interview Stefan asked him why he only played with his thumb and forefinger and not his other fingers and Davis said something along the lines of, that's all you need, the others get in the way. I thought that sounded pretty logical and 30 years on I still agree with him. I can't recall anyone else just using the thumb and forefinger only, so basically that interview shaped the whole of my playing during that time. Great to see him in this, one of his best. :)
Reminds me of the Bob Dylan film "Don't Look Back" where Donovan came across as a lost little boy. Maybe that was just the default persona for Donovan at the time.
@@sunbrosolaire3952 It is later than that. Donovan Leitch is on here, so it is several years after that. This was from a 1967 episode of "Rainbow Quest," which Seeger hosted.
Anyone who was a fan of the Rainbow Quest TV show knows that it was like a kitchen party; a kitchen table with a pot of coffee and anyone was welcome to join in. If you made a mistake, there were no do-overs, it stayed there. Two cameras and one mic.
A very Young Donovan in the background and the Eternal Ham Seeger trying to steal the shot. Took him most of the vid to figure out key. Reverend Davis was the best!
