People have been doing this sort of thing for a long time, without using the reverse coloring name. It's fun to do. I don't think I'd buy a book for it since I prefer to do my own. Throw paint on a page, let it dry, come back to it in a week or so and just draw on it. I think yours turned out really pretty.

Yes absolutely! I have two videos where I create my own page to doodle on! Good for the author for putting a name to it and giving those who need it readymade pages :)

I bought the first book and have been afraid to start using it because I am so bad at drawing. I am WAY overthinking it. I love your recommendation to start by drawing around the watercolor wash for those of us who are stuck. I’ll try that tonight. Watching my young daughter explore her artistic side has reminded me that I have really pushed that away as I have gotten older. But I am determined to continue to encourage her to honor that part of herself, and to find it back within me. Thank you for your videos!

Also just make marks, don’t think of it as drawing :) Use broader tipped markers so you can’t get hung up in the detail!

I do reverse painting a lot, especially when I'm not necessarily feeling myself when making a card for someone else. Often I find myself doing it in my classes too. I'll do some little splotch of the marker on my binder then take my finger and make little splotches on my paper. Then I just turn it into what I see. I often like how it turns out because it's abstract and quite calming.

This is similar to what my niece, who’s an artist, does sometimes! She uses acrylics, but thins them down to the point where her style of art resembles watercolor. But what she’ll do is just paint loose designs, shapes, blobs, etc. on the paper, then let her imagination take over. She’s a very whimsical artist with a fun, colorful and loose style. And she loves to use dark scribble lines in her work. It’s really lovely how she pulls it all together! 🌷🖼 🎨

Hey Kristy! Yes! I have done reverse coloring, but not in a book. I sometimes lay down some splotchy watercolor onto a page and after it dries, I go back in with markers -- usually black and often white. And often adding in more color like you did here. I LOVE this process. Thanks for sharing this with us.

i didn't realize this had a name! it is one of my favorite ways to paint. i really love the effect as i can paint wildly, loosely and then tighten and refine it with the black or white pen afterwards. (sometimes with acrylic paint pens and rarely with fine sharpies too if i need a particular color.) it is one of my favorite ways to make greeting cards for family and friends.

I can see how it could be fun and therapeutic to have a book like this! I often do this intuitively in my abstract art and I guess in my art in general. Building layers and details is such a fun part of the creative process. Your finished piece turned out really pretty and that bright green you added at the end really brought it together. Thank you for sharing ❤️

I haven’t done reverse coloring exactly. I have done something like this with my grands paintings. I’ve found all kinds of animals and objects. They got such a kick out of it. I just used a pencil. But I have done the same idea with negative painting with watercolor. I think it’s great fun. It seems to develop your imagination and your ability to see wonderful images in very subtle ways.

I used to do something kinda like this with mod podge and charcoal. I'd splatter some mod podge on the page and use a palette knife to drag it around and create lots of texture, and then when it dried I would lightly go over the page with some charcoal to define the shapes that the mod podge made. Then I would look and see what I could recognize in the shapes, and then I would bring those things to life by adding watercolor, acrylic paint and any medium I felt like. I always thought of it like I was taking snapshot of my own mind by doing an artistic version of an ink blot test and then capturing it on the page. It's really fun to do when you aren't feeling creative or just can't think of anything to paint, and it always comes out looking cool. The charcoal adds an interesting depth and texture when mixed with watercolor, and it was great for creating dark and creepy looking paintings. You can always forgo the charcoal and go straight in with watercolor to get a lighter look, though, or do any other variation you can think of. I definitely feel like this would be a good art therapy exercise to do, because there's no pressure to create a specific result, so you're just going with the flow and letting your subconscious guide you.

Thanks for showing this method of “painting.” This is such a great way for folks who have been afraid to try their hand at doing their own wc paintings. (I have done this myself before…see my earlier message.) I think it’s an “encourager” or “helper” method for those who really want to move on to more serious pieces that are “all theirs,” but just don’t know where to start. Of course, it’s also just good fun for anyone who wants to play around and create some art. 😊

So this video rocked my brain. I immediately went and dug into my stash of "stuff I painted that isn't too horrible but stays in the storage box" and found two pieces that needed some love. I've now revived three pieces that were a great coloring book background page. I have fallen back in love with my colored markers. I am NOT interested in digging through the internet for art trends, but when you do these challenges I feel like you're curating the most enjoyable parts of "keeping up with the grams" and it's doing wonders for my mental health to have these fun techniques and new explorations "Kristy-fied". I suppose this is fun for folks who like cute washy florals or cute soft illos. I have a hard time with this method as I tend need much more structure, I do mostly portraits and fantasy illustrations and things that need a specific pallet or structure. I am sure this kind of coloring book is good for a warm up. But I know I'll get frustrated if I don't know what values or hues I need for an art pieces
@KristyRice
@KristyRice 2 года назад
Absolutely, it's def not for everyone :) I would challenge you though, as someone who presumably loves realism, to go in to something like this with your style and a limited palette and see what happens! Going hyper-realistic over a washy background could be incredible!

I’ve done this before….I just didn’t call it “reverse painting” or know to call it that. It can really help to give definition to your paintings or wannabe paintings when you just can’t get your mojo together to do your base outline drawing…or it can be done intentionally….especially if you have lots of details that may be overwhelming.
