Hi there! My name is Jessie and I have been living abroad for many years now. In this video I discuss what reverse culture shock is, my own experiences with it, and what you can do to deal with it.
I hope you find this video useful and interesting!

I came across your video while looking for videos that can help me explain how I feel right now. I just moved back to Australia after living in Japan and feel like I'm drowning in reverse culture shock. I especially relate to the part where you said it feels like everything around you hasn't changed at all but you have, and it's a really hard feeling to accept. I feel like I belonged in Japan, and I don't feel like I belong in Australia anymore and it starts to make me feel like I'm crazy. Anyway, I'll have to try out the tips you gave. Thank you for your video ❤

From Canada. Happened to me twice. Once after spending four months in the mountains of northern Thailand near the borders of Laos and Myanmar. Arriving back in Canada and my home city….I was hit with the very strong feeling that I didn’t really belong in my home city anymore. It felt different…I was changed. And again on another trip, two months in Cambodia followed by a few days in Bangkok, with lots of time at amazing temples. Returned to Canada and my home city again. And again….the weird feeling inside that I no longer belonged in my birth country and city. Very strange….

Dear Jessie, i feel like you felt... even after many years living back in the Czech Republic. It just never feels the same here for me, but also i didn't feel right staying here at that time and wanted to go abroad .It's still a bit strange living in one place after 9 years, combined, in the UK and USA. . I have an urge to just go to Argentina with all my family. 3kids. Your lessons and videos are great. Much happiness to you , from Pavel

¡Que bien! It happened to me in Spain. Before they were quite pigs environmentally-wise, throwing away stuff in the streets, now containers everywhere and they using them!

After more than two months away from Zaragoza, I'm still not used to eating dinner early again, my mom is complaining that I barely eat throughout the day hahahaha The bigger shock was that ppl don't wear masks or care for safety measures :(

It can be so hard to change our habits sometimes haha! I'm sorry to hear that people aren't taking safety precautions there. Hope you and your family are staying safe!

I prefer the indiffernce of Europe, its a challenge. Getting a Spanish female shop worker to laugh is a proper challange, when she does, the sense of achievement - we lived together for 3 years, still miss her but Blanca was insane, still I would never have lived in Triana otherwise

You mentioned the smiles and friendly demeanor, but I've heard from Germans that they consider this display as "oberflaechlich" (Sorry, my keyboard doesn't have the umlaut) or "superficial." As an American myself, I found the criticism slightly offensive and insulting, but they were also right.

I can see how American smiles and demeanor can be seen as superficial, but I miss that a lot! I miss the friendliness of strangers and the ease of talking to people. Even if the conversation is superficial, it can be really nice and improve my day.

Unsolicited 'constructive' critique might be one of these actual German clichee moves. Being more or less concise or efficient aren't traits that can be attributed to one culture or another - like your comment suggests. Gibt überall Leut die gern und viel reden, da kann der Inhalt nicht immer mithalten. On the contrary, it's not even funny as a joke to believe that something like efficiency prowess is something linked to German or any other culture. Just a sad old trope, to explain surface qualities or rather observations within a culture. "Das war einmal" wäre in dem Zusammenhang eine andere geglaubte Lüge die immer gerne weitererzählt wird.
