I've used a towel soaked in lacquer thinner put it over it so that way the air does not make it evaporate and tend to put a piece of newspaper or cardboard over top of that so it holds all the vapors and it works faster and a lot easier without even having to wipe as much

I actually have a set of "French" scrolling brushes from 1974 ... I filled them with car 50 weight oil and then filled the brushes between my fingers with "Vaseline" petroleum Jelly. Last year I found my metal storage box almost 50 years on, so using a "spring jar" with Lacquer thinners, cleaned and re-oiled it with linseed oil first, then using "one shot" enamel I filled and brushed it out ... NO JOKE, they worked great, lost a couple hairs. So as you say; clean and store your brushes will last a lifetime. Great post Paul... Thunder Down Under... Ken

Great tips Paul, I'd like to add that Hyde glue also glows under a black light, easy to locate any pieces that got away. Happy new year bud.

Love the lacquer thinner trick , and I find with my brushes that you don’t want to over work the heal with too much pressure or they will start to loose their shape.

So was rhe gold leaf covered with shellac and would the thinner destroy it but not affect the gold leaf?

Another for the pounce wheel and pounce patterns is to cut out a small square or shape of your choice in 2 corners in case you add chalk again. I guess you could call them registry marks.

Absolutely love this channel Paul keep it up :) do you think this will be a good hobby for someone or do you think a lot of time is needed?
@happygilder
@happygilder 2 года назад
Thanks Josh! It's a great hobby and you can dedicate as much or little time to it as you want. Start out with small simple pieces and you can get one finished in a day :) I have a full time job, and the RU-vid channel and still find time to make personal pieces

Looking for advice. I etched some glass, and water gilded, using a formula of 1/2 diamond to 1/2 pint of distilled water. The gold has set on the surface for 3 days. When I tried to paint it with one shot, the gold is lifting in places. We are having cold rainy weather. I don't know if it needs to sit longer, or if my water gild did not work. Any suggestions?

Hi Deborah, it could be a few things. The gelatine to water ration should be 2 x diamonds per half pint of distilled water. If you’re gilding sandblasted glass, you should lacquer the etched surface before gilding. You can use clear gloss enamel, or a spray lacquer. Lastly it could be the number of coats. For glue chipped glass do 3 layers of gold leaf, and then back up with clear enamel. The gold should be dry in 30 minutes max so 3 days is more than enough time.

Hi! Can I glue chipping glass after using armour etch cream (instead of sandblasting)? I watched a video of you using dremel instead of sandblasting.
@happygilder
@happygilder 2 года назад
Hi, unfortunately it won't work with armour etched glass because the surface is too smooth

Which design program do you like to use best for sign making?

I prefer photoshop but that’s not what I’d recommend if you’re new to all of them. Illustrator is my recommendation for any vector based design
