Reverse Speckling and Direct Application Dye

Base yarn used is 80/20 Superwash Merino Nylon from Ashland Bay
Dyes used are a mix of Pro-Chem, Jacquard and Dharma Trading
Dharma: Flourescent Fuscia, Flourescent lemon, Purple Pop, Berry Crush, Bright Aqua
Jacquard: Spruce, Olive, Brown
Pro-Chem: Brilliant Violet, Jet Black, Turquoise
Citric Acid is used as a mordant (vinegar leaves a smell, is more expensive and doesn't yield great results for really deep color value).
Steamer, dye bottles, pans, double wide plastic wrap and syringes all sourced from Amazon
My own personal recipe for dye stock is: 5 grams dye (Tablespoon), 500 ml water (2 cups), Tablespoon of citric acid mixed with really hot water to dissolve everything. If you want a lighter color value, draw up more water and less dye, for really saturated colors, use pure stock.
Mixing dye stock with citric acid makes the dye "stick" where it lands quickly and cleanly. Only mordanting the base and not the dye can create over mixed, muddied colors. The only downside is that you have to use the dye within 72 hours or dump it. Brilliant blue, peacock blue, Cabernet and most reds will gel/cake/separate or lose color vibrancy within hours. According to the dye manufacturer, unused dye stock without citric acid can be stored for up to six months but that hasn't been my experience. I mix a fresh batch each dye session to ensure the brightest, boldest, most washfast colors possible.
Always steam set your yarn - microwaving it will create scorch spots and uneven colors. Even if you set it to half power and do it in 2 minute increments.

Daphne Hardy it's sad and disheartening how many dyers are secretive and proprietary. We all get better with a free and open exchange of ideas, tips, tricks and techniques. My mission for 2018 is to unpack every step of the process on RU-vid and run experiments to determine who makes the best dye and what method yields the best results.

Believe me, it took years for me to research and develop the technique for it. Including using color removers bleach, and the tiniest pipettes and syringes you've ever seen 😁 Knowledge shouldn't be hoarded.

Thank you for your immense generosity in sharing your ingenuity and color sense. I haven't tried this yet but I read that someone uses teflon plumbing tape along the screw cap and then it does not leak. Sounds great if it works. Will let you know. Thanx again lovely work and excellent teaching.
@ooohlaa13
@ooohlaa13 6 лет назад
I did try the tape on my hair dye bottle and it worked, it did not drip at all, but on another bottle it did tiny drips but nothing like I started with. There are grades of teflon tape and mine is the sleazy cheap kind that came with a plumbing kit, but you can buy sturdier kind that does not wrinkle up.

Carla Johnson I'm glad you like it! Back in 2009 I started experimenting to find a way to have a dark base with rainbow speckles. After 5 years of failed and minorly successful experiments, I finally got the jackpot with this technique. In May 2014 I shared a booth at Patchwork craft fair with two super talented shibori dyers. I saw how they wrapped/tied fabric and started trying that out on yarn, and this is the result of that effort.

Nicole Frost that’s wonderful! I tied off my first run of deep greens and blues to turqua kinda colors and it turned out pretty cool. I wanted a major tie dye and was happy with the end results. So far I’ve only done about 3 lots of a tie dye but for s newbie it ain’t bad. I wish I knew how to post them on here. I screwed up a rainbow 🌈 hank by doing those squeeze tip thingys so I just redyed It midnight blue🤪

Great explanations! Clear and concise. Am I right to say all the acid gets mixed in with the dye stock and the hank is colored when it's dry? I love the steaming technique-- and I think it's better than doing low immersion which is messy and floods the colors. How much water all together in the pot, including the 2 cups to mix stock? And, (last question, I promise)- if you want to save your dye stock longer, can you add citric acid to the dye pot instead? Thanks for all your time and superb technique here!

gagaloo83 that's the "Newport" base from Ashland Bay. You have to have a wholesale license, resale license, and be approved for an account with them. Check out wool2dye4, they sell to the public and have a few sock weight yarns that are sparkly

Deatra Faughn nope. Doesn't exist. Only pink and yellow do, the orange/green/and purple are less bright derivatives. Aljo manufacturing claimed to have a blue one, but it's actually violet, and it truly doesn't flouresce brightly at all. I spent 5 years searching.

OMG - Wow!!! This is an amazing idea. The blue with the speckles is my new love.I am a beginner and as such have a question. When you say steam it for 15 minutes each side. How is each side defined? Just pick up your snail roll and put the bottom side on the top? I just want to make sure before I try this. Thanks so much for sharing your videos.
@NicoleFrostYarn

It has to be heated evenly throughout. However you wrap and roll it, flip it over halfway through in a manner that heats it evenly.
@rosamunda4713
@rosamunda4713 6 лет назад
thank you. I was pretty sure you didn't unwind the roll and rewrap from the other end but had to be sure. I couldn't see how you could do that without burning your hands permanently.

is the skein dry to start or soaked? I might have missed you saying...
@NicoleFrostYarn

I did - clearly- that the reverse speckle goes in dry to prevent dye migration under the ties. The direct application is soaked first for evenness of dye penetration.

why do you have your camera scrunched? it doesn't feel good to watch so constricted (to me)
@NicoleFrostYarn
@NicoleFrostYarn 6 лет назад
BarbaraL Lowell I don't know what you mean by "scrunched" but this is being filmed on a cell phone and the aspect ratio options are limited. A professional camera and camera operator are several thousand dollars each (I checked) which would make it impossible to produce content that's freely available. There are plenty of dyers that have for-pay subscriptions to their dye tutorials for between $250-500 that you can check out.
@ooohlaa13
@ooohlaa13 6 лет назад
I am pretty sure that even with cell phone you can have it so it is not a sliver but not a techie so cannot inform but I remember someone else having this issue and someone told them how to use some setting or camera hold or something that gave them a full screen. Anyway I meant it to be constructive because I love to see more of what you are doing, you are a great teacher and artist. I surely understand about $$$. better than anyone. Did not mean to offend, I watch lots and lots of you tubes and you are one of the best.

Why would anyone do a tutorial of anything with the phone vertically staged instead of horizontally. Beyond me. I wont watch videos done this way. Bye.
@NicoleFrostYarn
@NicoleFrostYarn 5 лет назад
Considering these are done on a zero dollar budget and I'm doing in depth tutorials for free to the public - this is the best I have from the video editing software. Landscape orientation cuts off 30% of the view field from how close I need to be. Why the fuck you came here to leave a shit comment, instead of a suggestion, I'll never know. But you're not my target audience. And your opinion is in the minority from the number of times this video has been viewed, shared, and liked. You haven't even contributed to the cost of the materials, so where on earth do you get the entitled view that you deserve things to be edited and shot to your specifications? You know, in bird culture, what you did is considered a dick move
