I had 2 severe rotator cuff Surgery and arthritis and after MRI and Dr just said you need the reverse shoulder. I wanted it right away I had such bad bc of pain. Dr was booking it out so it was about 4 months. Best decision. I asked Dr the day of surgery when I could have the right one done. I don't have any degenerative arthritis. I'm 64. I had Ortho Lazer treatments after, my physical therapist saw me Tuesday I'm 6 weeks ahead of schedule. Rotator was awful.

Good luck.. I had a total reverse replacement.. in Apr.. It also took me y month to have my surgery.. u taking bout some pain that pill can’t stop.. on top of my shoulder was completely fried and out of socket.. I’m healing good everybody body different in healing process. Still healing but get more movement month by month. I just need to find someone that has heal after two year. What that feel like now.. Plz have someone there to help you for the first month. It going to be slow motion.. I sure do hate I can’t bench press any more. I’m a 80s baby.. need more info on internet and Reddit about healing and movement 2 years after.. of course doc said you will have to have another surgery in 15 to 20 years to tune up the wore out parts.. be very careful of these Doc. Some don’t do a great shoulder job. I would recommend…

Thank you so much for taking the time to do this video. At 74, I was afraid I was too old, but you addressed that. I m6st say I am very surprised you don't have a sling on because I keep hearing it's 6 to 8 weeks before it can come off. And I had no idea about the nerve block. I also had no idea how intensive the after surgery is going to be. Lots to prepare for it seems.
@PineyGroveHomestead

Everybody reacts a little different. I think the sling depends on how much of your rotator cuff is intact....mine was shot, so I couldn't hurt anything by moving right away after surgery. Updated video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s0QaukzP5S8.html

Great video! You are right about quality of Life. Arthritis ate up my left hip first and I fought getting a replacement for four years. When the pain was non-stop and I was gulping ibuprofen around the clock, I finally went for the surgery. Two minutes after I woke up from the operation, it was like someone had flipped a switch and the pain was gone. When the right hip fired up a few years later, I did not hesitate as long to get it done. Now two years later, it is time for my left shoulder. Range of motion is minimal, pain is everyday, it is time. Thank goodness medicine has come to the point where operations like this can give us more productive years than the crippling our grandparents had to suffer through. Good luck! I get mine February 8.

I have been told been told if it fails that surgically there is nothing more that can be done. My advice would be, if you have this problem, don't leave it as long as me. I used to work as a carpenter, l know now l will never be able to do any manual work again. Luckily in England we do have a national health service.

I have had 4 failed rotator cuff surgeries. Right has nothing, no motion at all. Got an infection and tried to tell the ortho I had problems. He blew me off for 2 years while the infection ate into my joint. I finally got to another ortho and he cleaned the joint out and I got a PICC line for antibiotics. Now my left rotator cuff is torn. I feel there is no end to this back and forth crap surgeries. Glad you had a good doctor and you are doing good.

This was great. I am going for the same surgery here in Canada. My surgeon told me I have to wear the sling for 6 weeks, and recommended an ice machine which I got already. The way I look at it is the pain can’t be any worse than what I have now. He also said therapy is vital. The only real difference is I have to stay in the hospital for 1 night. I am 75 years young, and need the other shoulder done too. Lucky me..thanks for taking the time to make this video.🤕

37 years ago when moving into the home I still live in, I was carrying a moving box and fell off the unfenced porch. I knew immediately my shoulder was not broken but severly injured. Sadly my doctor only took an xray and said it was burcitus but I know my body. And over time I lost years of sleep, became diabetic and now have been told my rotator cuff is completly destroyed and needs total replacement. The pain is sharp stabbing now and certain movements cause me to buckle over eith pain. The doctor said I also have carpel tunnel syndrome. My research had taken me to 3-D MRI as being beneficial for accurancy of revealing where and how much tear there is. I am also researching shoulder robotic surgery. Ten years ago I had endometrial cancer and had robitic surgery. However, ribotic rotator cuff surgery is in it's infancy. Thank you for being candid and informative. You both have enabled me in the decision making process (which has been long.) So much has changed in that field too. Glad that at 75 the methods of repair have improved. I live alone and have no support system avaiable as my children live very far away and my dear friends are departed or infirm now. That was the main reason I waited so long besides the fact numerous doctors insisted I did not have a torn cuff because of the range of motion. We all need to be our own best advocates as exhausting as it can be at times. God bless you both and good health to you!

Just stubbled across your very well done video. Our stories are very similar. I started having issues in my mid 50’s. Lived off of cortisol shots for several years. Was just buying time for what was the inevitable replacement. Was told the same time as you were about the wearing out the appliance earlier due to being relatively young still and active. I’ve been pumping iron for literally 48 years religiously..I’m sure this hasn’t helped my condition. Reading Digest version for the rest of my shoulder issues…Had my first replacement surgery 2 and half years ago and have had 7 surgeries since. Most recent was 2 weeks ago. 4 of those surgeries being replacement surgeries. I’ve had 2 two in each shoulder that were anatomical and just recently had a reversal done last September and the other shoulder a reversal 2 weeks ago. As you stated, the reversal takes the rotator cuff out of the picture and the deltoid muscle takes over. Luckily I was referred by my surgeon here in Idaho Falls, to a surgeon in Salt Lake City at the University of Utah , that is the rock star of shoulder surgeons. Thank goodness he was able to figure out my issues. My recovery from the last 2 surgeries has been night and day. I’m quite confident this we be my last of shoulder surgery!! 🙏🏼

Over the last 18 months I've had left hip, right knee & now total reverse shoulder replacement. The rotary cuff was damaged beyond repair & the joint was that badly damaged it took 3 hour's surgery to sort it. That was 5 weeks ago. The surgeon has now let me take my sling off & can now go to the gym. He said to go swimming & do breaststroke & try & lift my arm up. I've stopped painkillers & its now sore but will see how i go. I can do light work like wash up, but cant lift anything. The surgeon has told me because my shoulder was that badly damaged i wouldn't get my full us back.

I'm a month out of a reverse repair, experiencing little pain, and beginning PT soon. I had repaired this same shoulder from a posterior dislocation 50 years ago. As a drummer and swimmer, my rotator cuff simply wore out and tore, and I was unable to lift my arm more than a few inches. After 4 weeks, I'm still in a sling for when I go out, or to sleep. I started one-armed yoga when I felt safe enough, and am on a treadmill daily. Ice it every night. Maybe take a gummy to sleep. At age 75, I'm doing remarkably well. Interesting to share experiences because this surgery is crazy! (FYI a previous hip replacement 4 years ago is now as good as new. I credit yoga or at least stretching daily).

Just want to say a big Thankyou for your video. I am from the Gold Coast Queensland Australia. I am 1 week post op with same surgery. I start my P T on Tuesday. I am still in sling but doing my basic movements as told to. Pain is under control after a few days. Was in hospital for 2 nights and that was great. They made sure pain meds were given as required only if I really felt the need otherwise it was just Paracetamol. Was wondering about the movement and how things were going to be. Thankyou for explaining all this. I now know what I am in for. I am an office worker and am looking forward to getting back to work. I had a motorcycle accident 10 years ago and broke the humeral head off broke that in 3 places plus multiple pieces of bone chips and fractured dozen the humerous. About a 5. - 6 hour op about 4 days later had a plate screwed in place holding everything together. Pain was horrendous. 6 weeks later just come out of sling I fell and broke my arm clean across right at the last screw of the plate. Ended in a plastic brace for another 6 weeks. Could not drive for 12 months. Nearly 12 months to the day the removed the plate as were not sure if it was causing me pain. 18 months later arthroscopy surgery to clean up inside. Everything good. I just slowly over the next 7.5 years got more pain and very low range of movement but still functioning. X-rays showed arthritis was eating away at bone and it was getting more gnarly than already was because of the accident. So here we are it was nearly 10 years to the day I had three reverse shoulder replacement done. I am a 60 yr old female and I am looking forward to hanging clothes on the line without standing on tiptoe trying to stretch up. Kids call me T Rex because I struggle reaching for the sauce bottle on the table. I look forward to hearing more about your recovery and also on how my recovery will go. I would love to ten pin bowl again which hopefully I will be able to aim for. I hope more people watch your video as you are very informative and have given more great hope in my own recovery. @@PineyGroveHomestead this is now sixty to seventy percent of shoulder replacement. takes ninety minutes. is same day surgery. blessings if you ever see your surgeon again. this is overused. if your rotator cuff torn to shreds this is only option. but it is used frequently now when anatomic should be an option. wish in the video the arm was raised, turned, challenged. it is a toss up for some: pain or disability. for others it is great. but too much profit for the surgeon. too much discomfort if the patient asks questions. happy for you and others this works for. but i believe is over used and over sold. completely changes the dynamics of the joint. not like hip or knee replacement. completely changes the joint forever. to me it is creepy.

Great job!. It's 3 months later, and you've posted a lot of vids of you working on the homestead. Very impressive. I enjoy home remodeling and working on cars, and am putting off a RTSA that was recommended because of a massive tear (not arthritis). 1) What CAN you do now that you couldn't do before? 2) What CAN'T you do that could do before? 3) Do you feel that your other [good] arm might be getting overworked?
@PineyGroveHomestead

ROM is greatly increased. Static pain (like while sleeping) is basically gone. The biggest thing is weigh restriction....45# after a year of healing is the standard. I'm mindful of weigh restrictions but I just live life now and back off if there is pain. I have arthritis in my left shoulder as well so eventually I will need that one replaced.
@DaveYadaraf
@DaveYadaraf 7 месяцев назад
@@PineyGroveHomestead 45# is awesome! ROM is always a two-sided coin, and while I can extend my arm, I can't really support much weight once extended. Imagine hanging drywall. My favorite 20 minute workout is to hike around a circular field while repeatedly throwing a football 20 yards with proper full-body mechanics, including the spiral at the end -- both left and right arms, even though dominant arm is way better. I wonder what will happen after RTSA. As for dynamic movement, can you throw a 20-yard spiral? 10?
@PineyGroveHomestead
@PineyGroveHomestead 7 месяцев назад
@@DaveYadaraf I couldn't throw overhand for 10 years...my shoulder couldn't do the movement. I haven't thrown anything heavy yet, but I can do the overhand motion now.

@@PineyGroveHomestead so far so good. I fell last year and fractured the glenoid bone. When he went in to do the reverse shoulder surgery, my bone just crumbled on him. Had to wait almost a year for the bone graft to heal and here I am now. Been a long wait, can’t wait to use my arm! Hoping your recovery is going well ❤️

So glad I found this! Awesome video and congratulations on your successful surgery and ongoing recovery.. I’m just 5 days post op from a revision reverse(surprise) arthroplasty and I’m really shocked and worried about what my life is going to be like going forward.. Just like you, I’ve worked hard in my life and I’m only 50 years old.. My first operation was anatomic and just 4 years ago. Evidently I worked so hard(through pain) I destroyed it. My surgeon said he opened me up and that’s how he found this out, then decided to do a reverse procedure which surprised us all… What on earth am I going to do now? My skills and experience involve heavy lifting.. I’m so confused about what I need to be asking my surgeon, asking questions because I need to know how I’m going to support a family and home.. I’ve only had about 10 minutes with my surgeon since the operation, and I see him next Tuesday.. I don’t even know what questions to ask.. but from everything I’m seeing online this does not look good for my future and I have some serious concerns.. As far as I know my rotator cuff is intact, that it was my glenoid bone that was insufficient for another anatomic procedure..So I’ll definitely need to ask about that, which would heavily make a difference going forward.. He told me “stay in the sling” and that’s because I likely still have my rotator cuff that needs to be protected for healing(to my understanding)… My goodness what have I done?? Lol Sorry about the rant and long read.. I’m still in shock waking up to a reverse and not knowing what I’m going to do.. Your video did put me at ease some.. Thank you Brad and Deb, for sharing your experience with others.. I have so much to learn and figure out.. and if you have any suggestions on questions for my surgeon I’d appreciate it..

First of all, I am not a doctor, so I can't offer medical advice about your specific situation, BUT, I had SEVERE arthritis and limited motion in my right arm. I am now 3 months+ post surgery and although my operative shoulder deltoid looks a little different than my non-operative because the reverse drops the joint down, I have zero regrets. We went in knowing the reverse was likely the best option due to my rotator cuff damage. As far as lifting, most surgeons say 45ish pounds maximum with the new shoulder, BUT many weight lifters are going right back to it and ignoring the weight restriction. The biggest risk with exceeding the 45# limit is that you wear the plastic out in the joint earlier than 10-15 years and have to get that replaced sooner. I lifted weights in the gym today...just not as heavy as I used to.
@dcrookster
@dcrookster 7 месяцев назад
Oh ok… that sounds much more promising than some other things I’ve read.. BUT, like you said, we are all different and have different experiences and I totally understand that.. We are relatively young and strong so I’m sure I’ll be fine with some little adjustments going forward.. Just gotta take care of myself a little better obviously… I’ll holler at ya in a few months and I’m sure I’ll be in a much better position.. Sorry for letting some emotions get to me.. Thanks again for sharing .

That’s awesome and glad you’re doing much better in just 3 months.. I just read my operative report and found where my surgeon was able to repair my cuff.. I’m not sure where he attached it to with my humeral head cut off, but it’s going to be interesting to find out.. Apparently some people get a reverse due a previous failed anatomic setup, while preserving the rotator cuff. My glenoid was insufficient for anatomic repair… Anyhow, this is all so fascinating and I’m sure I’ll be finding out more about what happened when I see my surgeon next week.. We are truly blessed!! These surgeons rock! Thank You Brad!

My left shoulder i've had It replaced and now because I do have mixed connective tissue disease from the military. My body attacked the area and caused my rotator to completely Tear in half, and now I'm having that shoulder reversed.

I just had reverse shoulder replacement after 2 torn rotator cuffs surgery. I'm 64. Literally I went in 3 weeks ago. It was so painful, popping, snapping everytime constantly. I did have Ortho Lazer treatment after surgery that was amazing that taking out inflammation, pain relief and bruising. Went to first pt who I've gone to for 19 yrs. I'm 6 weeks ahead of schedule. The only major thing I needed was filling ice machine. I did have a 23 hr hospital stay. I only needed pain meds for about 5 days. My last rotator cuff I literally slept in a recliner and needed alit of help. So for me this was a cake walk.

Right shoulder in September 2022 and left shoulder last October (2023) I’ve got nearly full range of motion in both shoulders and still improving, doing push ups, lifting weights and swimming again. How strong will the shoulder be compared to the nonsurgical side?
@PineyGroveHomestead
@PineyGroveHomestead 7 месяцев назад
For me, my non-surgical side also has arthritis, so the surgical side will be better. Muscles are used differently with a reverse shoulder replacement, the deltoid looks a little different on that side. Most doctors recommend lifting be restricted to 40# or less even after fully healed.

Therefore I wonder how strong the joint is afterwards. Plastic? Yikes, Doesn't seem like the joint will be too strong with stuff like plastic. How much can you safely lift with that arm now without putting it in danger? One surgeon said 5 lbs. Another said 25 lbs. Yikes, that's not much!

I’m told to stay 6 weeks always in the s ling unless I’m doing 5 times a day dangles and swing circles. I had no one to stay with me. The nurses sent me home withweeken instructions for another patient. I was alone from day one, with questions that never got answered. I called 12 times in 48 hours, leaving messages that never got returned.. exhausted. Wednesday surgery, Friday night came and no help Now I had to appeal to. Weekend nurse ratchet types. The first 5 days were a nightmare of being abandoned.
