Big props to Hyundai for NOT using CVT's even in their inexpensive cars like this one. The torsion beam rear is a downer but the price makes up for it. I can forgive the slow acceleration to get 40mog's "No matter how i drive it".... That's pretty frickin good. Not bad looking insider and out either. Good job Hyundai 👍

Big agreement on that! Planetary gear torque converter automatics for the win. Feel, durability, serviceability: think, 15 year old taxicabs in Mongolia. What is the transmission of choice there? I will never buy a belt drive CVT car. Not that I plan to drive a taxi in Tibet, but if it can handle those conditions, it's unlikely to let me down in Death Valley.

Mazda keeping it real with torque converted autos as well. Compliant and responsive in the iA and the CX3.

Evan Andrews: Yeah, and Mazda has the whole great to drive thing down like no other budget J-car, though Honda comes close. But they've gone to the dark side with cvts, possible bad news 15 years down the road.
@techpappee
@techpappee 6 лет назад
Jeff Eppenger agree, I do wonder though if they will start using a cvt eventually. The 2019 Forte will have Kia/Hyundai new IVT transmission. Apparently it's supposed to have gear like (shift logic) tech. They're using a chain system instead of a belt like most CVTs. Time will tell. ..."The in-house-engineered IVT is considered a next-generation CVT. “We tried as much as possible to make the IVT feel like a normal step-transmission,” Hedrick said. To accomplish that, Kia engineers built the IVT with adaptive style shift logic and a chain-link-type belt instead of a push belt--an industry first in the compact class."... www.sae.org/news/2018/01/2018-naias-2019-kia-forte-gets-smart-cvt

Just bought a 2018 Accent last week. I got the base model with the six speed stick. Even the base model is not a stripper. Cruise control, blue tooth for your phone, nice stereo MP3 player controls in the steering wheel. Awesome AC. Got 38 MPG on my first tank of gas. This is my 6th Hyundai since 1999.

Got up to 90 for a short time. Don't need a speeding ticket. The first accent I had was a1999 model. I drove about 100 mph in it for about an hour. The car took it fine but two of the cheap Kumho tires had belt separations and I had to replace them. The 2018 has Continental tires. 23K miles so far with no problems. Still getting 40MPG.

I'm a big fan of the Accent. Working at a rental company we get alot of these and I find them far more enjoyable to drive than the Corrolla, Sentra, Versa, Focus, and Sonic. I think Savagegeese is exaggerating alot when it comes to the cars power, it definitely feels faster than all those cars I just mentioned and I think alot of that has to do with the AT which is smooth and always gives you the gear you want. Plus we NEVER have reliability issues with them and that with hard rental use. Such a solid car.

Had this car and the Rio on my shopping list, but my boys are entering their teens and sitting them in the back seat (at a recent auto show) revealed that there is no way I could buy this car and put my boys in the back. Ended up getting the Kia Forte with better leg room in the back, and a nice auto with adjustable shift modes. But this Accent is a great car if you have small kids or none at all.

I just got my second Hyndai Accent, my first was a 2010, my second is a 2018 and the new car is much better with power windows and things like cruise control. The things I really like about the cars from Hyundai is that they have very good simple, good engineering from the engine compartment to the interior. It’s not really fast but great gas mileage and really good reliability and my 2010 Accent never gave me anything that I had to take it to a dealership to fix until it had 140,000 miles on it and one of the ignitions each separate over the cylinders failed and it stopped running great and I took it to a dealership and they quoted me almost $1,000 to fix it. They charged me almost $400.00 for spark plugs and a gasket over the compartment that’s over the plugs but their service did not fix the problem. Some dealers are not good I believe from my experience with them over many years. I fixed the problem by borrowing a plug in device that said my number 3 ignition was failing. I went to my local parts store and purchased one for $75.00 and it took me about 20 minutes to install and then it ran just great again. I’m very mechanical oriented and do a lot of service on anything from electronics on Yachts to most things around the house or simply service on automobiles. All I can tell you is that Hyundai builds a very well engineered, very reliable auto that for the price is the best or one of the best cars in my experience and I have lots of experience with cars that my huge family owned over the last 40 years. Everything from $200,000 car to 20 year old used ones for $500. Both of my Hyundai cars have been some of the best reliable and long lasting with the service costing the lowest of any other cars that I know about. I think I know why they are growing in the business from when they started even during the bad economic times.

It’s refreshing to see an economy car just be an economy car. So many modern economy cars are overly stiff to prove how sporty they are, and then shoved full of screens and fake leather and they wind up with a $25k+ MSRP. Idk how we wound up at this point. How many people out there are willing to drop 30k on a civic touring or a golf?

@doctorferdinand1003
@doctorferdinand1003 6 лет назад
Thats really absurd. I don't know who in their right minds would fork over that much for an appliance. Manufacturers are doing a very poor job incentivizing new entry level sales. Old and crusty as it may be, the Nissan Versa is actually an impressive value proposition. A fairly big, mechanically proven car for less than the price of some of these tiny box junks. It's pretty spartan but it has a good engine that's reliable and efficient, a comfortable ride and a lot of usable space. When did basic transportation stop being about that and start being about awful, rubbery fake leather and poorly integrated ipads in the dash?
@ARentz07

The Versa Note in particular isn't that bad, as it has a TON of space inside for the class. The back seats especially are roomy.

Way back in the day, 1988, the Mrs. worked for a company that was doing market research for Hyundai (They were being introduced into the US) and we bought one of the first, Excells? I don't remember. But it got horrible reviews however we did get over 100K out of it and it really served us well with trips from NC to NYC many times and no real problems beyond maintenance. I like the Hyundai, I would choose it over a Toyota or Honda simply because they cost less and are really of similar quality. Plus, I think they have a much better warrantee. But when you are poor and in school and living off minimum wage, buy one used. Good review, hard to find real people mover car reviews. The expensive car reviews are great fun but they don't really provide real world buying, driving or living. Hat's off. Oh and near 40MPG!! Oh yea!

We have a 2015 Sonata GL Canadian trim in the rust capital Nova Scotia where your car is covered with salt from ocean spray and 95% humidity let alone salt on the road in winter. There is still no rust under it, simple 2.4l with decent power and a great 6 speed auto (that downshifts on its own to engine brake in eco mode). The only work I've had to do was change brake pads and i love how simple it is (manual parking brake with a rotor/drum combo). The car is really simple, smooth like all modern cars are, and things are smart about it, especially the drains in body panels and wrapping over welds, even the rocker panels and pinch weld are smartly done. It's as boring as watching paint dry but I love it for what it is.

When I look at cars like this, I'm not worried about 0-60. Yeah, 0-60 takes 10 seconds. But the vast majority of people buying this car are city driving. What is more important is something like 0 to 40 so you can get into traffic and keep up. I do appreciate this channel and how you (unlike some other car reviews on RU-vid) evaluate each car for what it is and what people are buying it for instead of spending an overwhelming amount of time nitpicking over quality of plastics or pedal feel in a $14,000 car.

After daily driving an AutoX prepared ‘90s M3, receiving one of these as a rental car has been a real experience. It is slow as fuck, but it also cruises on the highway at 85 mph while getting 35 mpg without any issues. I love how you can just drive it over anything without a care in the world, because it does have soft suspension. I have had to get used to the fact that I can only take off and on ramps at half the speed I can in the M3 before the tires begin to squeal, but even that’s kind of fun. Reaching a car’s limits at low speeds had a charm in its own right. .

We won’t really be doing much with this car other than errands around town and to be honest, it feels lighter and more responsive than those others. I feel much more confident driving this thing through heavy traffic with arrogance compared to a C segment car. A 1.6 with CVT isn’t as slow as you think, though obviously you feel the lack of power in the highway.

Your videos on cheap new cars are SO much better than the supercar stuff--glad to see you getting back into it. Making a decent car you can sell for $15,000 and make a profit is a much more interesting feat of engineering than making a car for buyers willing to shell out a quarter-million dollars (and get 4 miles to the gallon). Please do the 2019 Corolla!

You should bring back Turbowski for ONLY cheap car reviews. Thing to remember is our current 'cheap' cars are miles and miles better than the economy cars of the late 90's and early 2000's.

I have realized what you were saying here for a while now. It's cool buying something you could easily afford and knowing that even if it wasn't difficult to buy, it does the job and works well enough and isn't gonna cost a bundle to run and maintain. Many people are running the rat race everyday, chasing their dreams 24/7 so they could 'get there', but I believe we're all disillusioned. Life isn't about getting all the money in the world so you could buy all the luxury there is, life is about living comfortably enough, having everything you need, and having enough security to continue living as such. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong about getting a Lexus but the issue there is people get so used to the high life that they miss the point of life that I just said and they become brats and snobs and rich kids of Instagram. So yeah, live comfortably, having everything you need and be grateful that you have everything you need.

rockn roll , well, add 3k to that Elantra and you get Sonata, so Elantra is pointless as well, right? The point is about the absolute price being lower than Elantra. That 2k could be a big difference for someone shopping in compact segment or used cars in 15k range, or business owners looking for delivery fleet.

Youn Gu as Sang Eeth said, it's actually more of a size preference. Not everyone has that "bigger is better" mentality. Some people prefer small, easily manageable cars with easy maintenance and not too bad looks

Thank you for the quality review of a car often overlooked by the automotive press. I just picked up my 2022 Accent SEL yesterday after a 2 month wait. Can I afford a $60k sedan for a second car? Yes but there is no need when I all I need is a fuel sipper that is reliable and comfortable. At 61, I've had my expensive toys and are depreciation and high maintenance costs. I don't care what others think about my ride. They now come with 3 years included maintenance. To the original owner my local Hyundai dealership warrants the powertrain for life. When I remember my first new car in 1997 had AM only, no power window or locks, no air-conditioning and vinyl seats this Accent for about the same inflation adjusted dollars is luxurious. I predict in the land of Brandonomics, automakers will have lots full of big SUV's they can't sell and nothing to offer the average buyer because they all abandoned subcompacts except Hyundai and Kia. Now as in the 1970's, value matters in the Brandon world of hyperinflation and $7 a gallon fuel in Communist California.

Another great video! Now this is the kind of vehicle most people can identify with. Love the idea that manufactures can make cars that don't cost an arm and a leg and can be easily serviced by the weekend mechanic. 40 miles a gallon is nothing to sneeze at either. I miss cars like this!! We are living in such a spoiled age where a car has become a computerized Appliance instead of a tool to get from point-A to point-B. Ten years ago, this would have been a breakthrough car. Now, everyone has to drive an Infiniti, Lexus or a BMW with the complexity of a cray computer. Crazy how spoiled we have become. Thanks for a great review.

I was a tech at a Hyundai dealership when they issued the recall on subframes and front lower control arms and even rear trailing arms on some vehicles. I can't even count how many subframes I replaced at the time. I still remember this one Elantra (XD) that got towed in with one of the front lower control arms (stamped/welded clamshell style) completely snapped in half at the weakest point and this was months before the recall was issued. Scary stuff. I'm glad Hyundai has come so far. Their older cars were terrible.

Thumbs up big time!! Nice review, you really do a nice job with your channel. I bought my wife a 2015 Elantra Limited loaded with all but the Navigation. Great car with really good gas mileage. She is retired and don’t drive it as a commuter. I sold cars for almost 20 years. Mostly expensive models until Obama and Bush screwed up our economy. Sales went to Hell and I went to work for Hyundai after years of selling exclusively high end cars. Hyundai paid us (salespeople, with Hi CSI) a bonus for every car we sold!!! That was easy, and I sold a ton of cars every month. I’d just treat my customers like they wanted and the sales just happened. Really enjoyed selling Hyundai’s but got tired of the long, late hours and working every weekend. Left the car business 3 years ago and really miss it, but not the hours and working every weekend.

"I sold cars for almost 20 years. Mostly expensive models until Obama and Bush screwed up our economy. " How did Obama screw up the economy? Enough with this false narrative. BTW didn't it occur to you that selling fake luxury cars at hyped up margin was your misfortune and honest hard work was your saving grace, instead of Obama and Bushes?

Jis Yang I’m sorry but unless you have walked in my shoes you should keep your mouth zipped. I sold Jaguars and the like for many years not expensive non luxury models. Obama’s had 8 years to get our economy back on track. But he didn’t, Trump has done more for the economy in his short time in office than almost all of our past Presidents combined!! I wasn’t in favor of Trump at first, but his regulation slashing has really got the ball/economy rolling!!! I know you are probably a never Trumpe’r so I’m not expecting you to agree with me. I have to agree with you. There is something about cheap basic cars. You get so much bang for your buck and a lot of them are pretty good to drive. I don't mean they are sporty and fun but good all around and fuel economy is great because of the lack of weight and skinny tires. Great review as always.

Excellent Review. Thanks for that. I'm on the same page regarding owning a simple car. Having owned Saabs, VWs, Subarus, and more. All I want now is simplicity and ease of ownership with some degree of driving joy. I currently own a 2013 Focus SE. It is a great driving car in NorCal with the mountain and coastal roads. Has given me zero issues and extremely lo-cost maintenance. Ford and the domestics no longer want my business. At some point in time, this is exactly what I will need. And I'm not ready to drop $ 25k+ for a civic or a new Corolla.

Yep. As I reach my late 30s..my idea of a cool performance car is no longer a 8 year old mustang GT. It's a very expensive race car with summer tires..so the idea of an affordable daily is looking better and better. The stresses of driving your pride and joy everyday and parking it safely, and taking it out in poor weather is just too much.

Wish you guys would have pointed out that the Elantra you guys drove had 45-series tires, which probably contributed heavily toward the choppy ride. The SE and SEL models have 15-inch 65-series tires which would probably be much better in this regard. You guys used to point these things out in previous reviews - hope you do so again in the future.

Have had this car for about 10 months. Apart from the points Mark has made, my 2 cents: Positives- Loaded with features at an affordable price. Good looking. Built by a manufacturer with good quality from a build and support perspective. Negatives- Sluggish engine at lower RPMs Terrible rear space for people who aren't short, length and height wise. Lower than expected MPG in slow moving traffic. Update: apparently has steering rack issues, got mine changed at 28K Kms but noise still present.

I got this car in April and it’s the greatest little daily driver. I deliver food in the city and I average around 33-38MPG city/highway. Speakers are decent enough that they don’t sound like cheap paper. Engine is quiet enough that you don’t hear it unless you push it closer to 4000RPM. Funny enough the base SE trim has a sport mode that keeps the RPMs around 3000RPM that I tend to use to turn onto and merge onto streets.

You and I have similar thoughts about cars. That opening segment was totally me and how I think. I bought a 2011 Hyundai Accent which BRAND NEW was $9800. My payment was $200/mo and it was such a great car for the couple years I had it. The MT was surprisingly great. I should have kept it because, well, it wasn't GDI. If it weren't for the itch to get something new every year I'd still own it. My Mazda3 finally scratches all the itches and I no longer have that need. Comfortable, efficient, and I dont have to worry about it, similar to an Accent type car with more style.

The 2018 Accent has 130 HP. I owned a 1980 Volkswagen Rabbit diesel that had less than 50 HP and I drove that durable little car coast to coast 3 times and even got a speeding ticket in Montana, which is tough to do. I would say your acceleration test of this vehicle was like a rocket ship compared to the diesel rabbit and much better than my 1984 Honda Civic which had about 75 HP. Remember, Toyota Camrys use to have only 125 HP and no one complained. People have gotten use to excessive amounts of power that you truly do not need to transport yourself from New York to Los Angeles. I love the way the Accent looks. It's a small car with class and dignity. Compare that to the silly and/or evil looking cartoon creatures being manufactured by Toyota Motor Corporation. Hyundai deserves a Nobel Prize in automotive design quality for the new Accent. I love it.
