I really like the way you talk about a sponsor. Most people are like "hey this is an amazing game! It has *insert thing* and it does *insert another thing* so much better than other games! if you like it follow the link" or something in that direction, you are straight forward with what the game is, you say things about the game that are negative but also positive, you're a great youtuber and keep up the great work

exlibrisas Even mainstream channels like Cinemassacre are doing it. RU-vid is not profitable on its own anymore so pretty much everyone is seeking for external sources of income. If someone has gotten very low that is RU-vid and their advertiser-pleasing crusade, wich in turn is screwing with content creators.

You should try testing regular "tool axes" as weapons. In part to compare it to combat designed axes, and in part for the lols.

A pioneer hatchet would be good as well. I was given on by my grandfather. Ive trained a bit with it and used it as a tool (albeit not the best for the roots of a 4ft wide tree). Need to make a handle for it.

6150 is a fine grained, highly abrasion resistant carbon-chromium alloy steel. Very good shock resistance and toughness are also key properties of this alloy in the heat treated condition.

ukezi Well, it is an axe. You want your axe edge hard, but not as hard as a sword or knifes edge. Usually around 42-48 HRC.

Im only a novice blacksmith, but wont casting the steel axe head make it brittle? Or am i mistaken?
@sgt_kissekatt6686
@sgt_kissekatt6686 6 лет назад
GallopingWalrus, might be personal preference but i disagree with you, i like my axes with a hard edge to retain the edge for longer, and the further back you get on the head the softer the metal should be, which would absorb some of the impact,helping to prevent chipping, also with a convex grind the edge holds for longer/less risk of chipping, now i have no idea how hard "42-48 HRC" is, but i make my axes as hard if not slightly harder (at the edge) than the knives i make. Have a good day sir. :)

I’m glad you finally did a review for this. I live in Minnesota where they’re made and located. It’s the best looking and effort I’ve seen in axes. It’s important to note that they do requests for extra money, it’s just a starting point. So if you want specific things done to it or have it reinforced, they will do it. They put their hearts into it.

I have four different axes and tomahawks from Cold Steel that I have customized and use frequently to trim branches and trees and general axe work. I've had absolutely no issue with the edge chipping or flattening out like you've shown here and while they did not come very sharp and in their basic form leave a lot to be desired aesthetically they are 100% functional and you get to use something that looks like Ragnar might have used it. And they're half the price of this one by the way.

I've had one of these axes for several years. I polished off the finish and will brown it sooner or later. The handle I replaced with a Cold Steel Tomahawk handle, and I use a wooded wedge to hold the head on. Works great. I mounted the handle upside down, so too speak, so I'd have the swelling at the bottom. There are two possible explanations for the handle being shaped as it is. One, helps you with edge alignment, and keep the axe from rotating in your hand. Its a great all around camp axe, that I've used for the time I've had it. And they still run 82 dollars US from Kult of Athena. I put a 26 degree edge on mine, both sides and I've used it to cut and split wood while camping with no issues.

Skall I also own this axe, bought it in 2015 I think. The angle is too large and it came extremely dull. So I don't think its just you. The head is too thick, had to grind it down for it to be able to chop anything. I wouldn't recommend this one, there are better viking style axes out there for less money. Otherwise go for arms and armour if you want pole weapons, warhammers, maces, swords etc. But not axes.

Stefano Dogg Condor usually has fairly good products, but there is definitely a quality control issue some times. Generally, with condor, you'll probably going to have to touch up their products or do a few modifications if necessary. @fisadev
@fisadev 6 лет назад
I'm not Skall, but anyway: I think in its current form (at least from what I can find online) is not a real fighting martial art. It still is a very impressive thing to watch and do, but many of the stuff they do won't be useful in a real fight, specially the spinning, flourishes, etc. It scores "style", which encourages a lot of risky movements just for the looks. And it also has forbidden targets like the arms, which in a real fight are almost a priority.

Most of the people that I know use A&A's Nordland as a costume piece. I am not familiar with the find it is based upon, but I am guessing that the original had a hardened steel edge that was welded onto a softer iron. Which would not knick quite as much. It is still a great quality axe in my opinion. As for the finish, I haven't found many reproduction axes that I don't take to the sander or grinder to remove any coating. I actually have a project in the works to sand down one of the 30" Hickory handles (like the ones that the Cold Steel Viking Hand Axes comes with) to fit the Nordland axe onto. I definitely prefer the longer handle over the shorter. Great review.

Great video, always enjoy the content, keep it up big lad 💪👍.

The bearded axe is more designed for planing than chopping so it will not perform ideally for this. My own as well as some of the museum examples are basically flat on one side of the blade and has a defined edge on the other. Originally they might have been used for planing planks for ships and yes planks in general. There are found chopping axes so the light bearded axe is a specialised tool.
@kevinstewart1700
@kevinstewart1700 6 лет назад
I wouldn't know if it would be historically consistent with Viking axes, but one method that is done in black smithing that leaves a durable black finish is to quench in certain types of oil. I can't specifically think of which kind at the moment. As far as the chipping, casting steel probably isn't optimal. I can't say I know for sure, but it likely won't leave you with a very nice grain structure. But for the price? Still sounds great.

Skall, my Nordland axe came with a grey finish on the steel. I buffed it off, reground the edge, repolished the steel, and forced a patina using ferric chloride; why doesn't Arms and Armor do this? My hand is too large for the handle size, so I made a custom handle to accommodate my larger grip. If this axe did not cost 80 bucks, this would have been a real inconvenience. Given the lower price tag, I was happy to make this a DIY project.

semi easy problem to fix with the chipping/edge retention if you know a decent blacksmith. take it in to him, have him anneal it and then re harden it and temper it properly. Problem fixed lol if you don't know a decent blacksmith however there should be shops around where you live you can take it in and have them do that or if you have access to a small forge and a 5 gallon bucket with sand you could do it yourself too. I've personally reshaped and retempered a few axes in my time, a couple cold steel norsehawks as well as a couple hanwei bearded axes. it can be a little time consuming but well worth the effort. I got my main norsehawk hardened and tempered to 61.5 HRC on the rockwell tester at the machine shop at my college. I edge quenched it in used motor oil which is my preferred type of oil to use.

Mine had the same problem with weak steel, easily shipped and smashed the edge, even the flat on the back of the head got extremely dented when used to hammer. Also had a steep grind and very dull edge and I bought mine in early 2016. I really like the design as well just wish it was better.

Have you tried tempering the head? I have no experience with 6150, so I don't know how well it works, but a cycle or two at roughly 200 c works reasonably well for similar alloys. Might be worth a shot, if you give a damn that is.

hey skall, I've owned this axe, and had the edge issue you've mentioned, so I emailed craig at AandA, and he told me that they weren't tempered at all, however they have a properly tempered axe with 6150 traditionally wedged into the face of the axe that you can order with any grind you wish, I think he quoted me at 156.00 usd? There are no cons there, i've had it now for about 4 months and I can fell anything within about a 6inch diameter easily anything larger than that and the axe is just too light. It is super well tempered, i maybe have to strop it every 4 or 5 uses to get it back to shaving sharp. Honestly it rivals my gransfors in quality, but i like carrying my arms and armor alot more aesthetically speaking. I thought i'd just leave this here. I have the emails back and forth to confirm the stock axes not having any temper.

Tempered or not, cast metal has a random grain structure while forging aligns the grains which makes it less likely to chip and able to hold an edge longer.
@stillenacht8518
@stillenacht8518 6 лет назад
D Hawthorne I was going to start with ‘where did you hear that silly tripe from?’ But I realize that would likely bot have been taken as the jest I intended. It seems like a logical conclusion because of the typical problems associated with casting. As a way to show you why that idea is sort of silly though, look around on youtube for a video titled something like ‘secrets of the viking sword.’ It’s about a forty to fifty minute video explaining the first historical use and manufacture of crucible steel. Crucible type manufacturing is how steel is made today, under rigidly controlled circumstance. The basic process is casting. Inclusions (airpockets or deposits of foreign materiel) such as what is typically associated with casting, come from insufficient heat or an excess of oxygenation in the crucible. A cast done with the proper steel and done correctly (nice clean and fluxed cast, a full liquidization of the steel and no air pockets) produces a powder like steel, with a very uniform and repeatable grain structure. Forging doesn’t align the grain well at all, and introduces alot of stress from molecules trying to get out from under the hammer. This is why good bladesmiths use a process called normalization where they just heat the blade and let it cool in air a few times to relax the grain and reduce the stress.
@Locahaskatexu
@Locahaskatexu 6 лет назад
think the black paint is to simulate an ironlike texture. Traditionally axeheads were strips of carbon steel forgewelded into a block of iron. Carbon steel has a brighter finish when it's polished than pure iron which has a sort of matte blackish grey texture to it. (e.g. the darker swirls in a patternwelded blade are the iron parts) Another thing the paint does is protect against rust.... given that carbon steel rusts like my granny's brassiere

Are there any significant design differences in a large axe that is made for chopping wood as opposed to one designed for cutting people? Would one made for either specific purpose suit the other just as well?
@stillenacht8518
@stillenacht8518 6 лет назад
ahaetulla People chopper is generally going to be small and light with a pronounced difference between the height of the eye and the edge. It will have a thin blade, perhaps even straight with no taper, and an abrupt angle from the flat to the eye. A wood chopper is going to have a lot more weight to it, with an edge that is close to the same length as the height of the eye, with a smooth wedge-like taper on the flats, from edge to eye. You can use a people chopper as a wood chopper, but it won’t be very efficient. Not enough weight or wedge to really split and bite effectively. On the same token, a wood axe is going to SUCK at people-hewing. You can smack somebody with it and it’ll treat them like squishy wood, but it’s going to be slow, awkward, and generally piss you off as much as it may hurt your opponent. Generally ‘It’ll do in a pinch’ is the best way to look at both when assessing if they can do the other’s job.
@stillenacht8518
@stillenacht8518 6 лет назад
Also, I mean felt weight. A people axe and a wood axe may weigh about the same, within the range of one and a half to three pounds in the head, but the feel of it is going to be vastly different. A wood axe will feel heavier, because it is balance for a different job. The axe in this video probably weighs about two pounds overall but a similarly sized hatchet (meant for wood) will be closer to four pounds overall, with most of its weight balanced towards the head. Two and a half to three pounds in the head for the wood hatchet and about a pound and a half for this one.

It will technically be a tiny bit weaker compared to a forged example because it doesn't have any gain flow, but within the range of force that can be applied by a human being, you'll never realistically be able to tell a difference on that front. Castings these days are actually stronger than forgings in some contexts where grain flow weakens the part, which is why they've become popular in firearms components. :)

Random thought, would a human femur bone make a decent tomahawk handle? (If shaped properly, obviously)

Is there any way to monitor which commercials are in the videos? The commercial which played was talking about how murder, rape, and war was entirely the faults of men and other hate speech against anyone with a penis.

I feel like a viking can't afford a sword but I can afford an axe which I have a couple now and because of Skal I may have to get another one. I may try the one from Corwin arms myself.

Does casting make a lighter axe compared to a forged axe ?

Karl Kruger No sir. The steel is the same in the end, so (wait for it) size is all that matters.

Doesn't look balanced for throwing.

Toastmaster1990 But significantly less if it hits with the blunt ens. Or even the shaft. Axes not made for throwing tend to rotate around the head, often hitting with the shaft.

i know that this axe is not good for trowing, but how much , how many hits out of 10 tryes , like that

Hey man! Have you ever heard about the new upcoming fighting sport called hema? It apears to be awesome, i’ve not looked at it much yet but you might like it. It’s not like one hit and back off but actually...you know...fighting...with all kinds of weaponry like pole axes, swords, i think axes etc. so...enjoy i guess ^-^. Keep it up!

"Have you ever heard about the new upcoming fighting sport called hema?" Is this the first video you've watched on my channel? :) I don't mean that in a mocking way, it's just funny to me. I actually talk about HEMA pretty frequently, and I uploaded a sparring video before this one. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YaXqf9iKpw4.html

Who makes better axes, Arms & Armor or Gränsfors Bruks?
@stillenacht8518
@stillenacht8518 6 лет назад
superstrongtoa The mere fact that you know the name of Bruks tells me this question is the height of well developed sarcastic wit. If not then Bruks wins. More than just easily, more than just no contest, we’re talking a boxing match between an ant and an elephant. One doesn’t even know the other is there, much less trying to compete.

This product seems to be made out of low quality steel, which makes sense because, as you know, an axe with good edge geometry and edge retention (like a Grandfors Bruk) costs 3x as much. This axe seems as good as you would expect for the price point.

I don't think you have too high demands on weapons sharpness Skall ... Small axes, used more for cutting into the wood grain, then to just split the wood by grain, really need a sharp edge and a thin blade. I have axes made just for wood working (not also war) which are a lot thinner. Sharpening an axe is also quite easy compared to swords. Another think that bothers me is that the manufacturer made the handle with the grain in the wrong direction. I don't think it's a problem with Hickory and this small axe, but it seems they made it deliberately perpendicular to the striking direction, which is weird. Overall the Arms and Armour products seem really overpriced. I haven't seen one of them that came up to the expectations.
