Wow. Thank you for introducing this medium with us today. Thanks also for all your reviews on Amazon.com. They are incredibly helpful. I cannot wait to purchase my own tin of ARTGRAF water soluble graphite soon!! It looks like you had so much fun with it. Your love and passion for art truly shows and shines when you talk about your artwork, your materials, and give out tips and techniques. Thank you for emphasizing tricky points and good ideas when you teach. I will definitely look into purchasing some spray fixative soon!

I’ve been revisiting all of your reviews on Artgraf products again. I’m still debating this purchase. I have a set of thick water soluble graphite sticks. I’m looking for something portable to use for quick value studies. Thank you Teoh!😊

Thank you so much for this comprehensive review. I had a gift voucher for my favourite art store and, on a whim, I chose ArtGraf (as well as a Kolinsky sable travel brush ☺️). I’m just starting to play now... it’s beautiful. Can you tell me if it’s compatible with watercolour? And if so, are there any special tips/techniques to ensure you achieve the desired outcome? Cheers and thanks 🙏

Graphite is usually best used on its own. When used with watercolour, the colour combination is going to look weird.

Hi Theo, I have been rewatching this video and all the graphite-related ones recently because I am trying to get used doing value studies. I really enjoyed them and always appreciate so much the effort and great explainations you put in you demos and reviews 😊 have you tried by any chance the Derwent XL Graphite blocks that came out recently? The new ones, natural (not the colored ones) version of graphite compressed chunky big blocks. I got the tin of 6. I find them hard to use as a water-soluble medium though. Very uneven textures, I can't achieve a smooth wash, and they will smudge a lot after dry. It doesn't really stay put on paper and it takes only a careless light touch of your hand on a portion of your work to move the dried graphite. I really hope you will get a chance to do a review on this product... Hopefully you could show a way to use them, better than I tried to figure it out so far!
@teohyc
@teohyc 3 месяца назад
It is difficult to create smooth wash with graphite. That's just the way it is with graphite. Whether graphite will fix on paper depends on the binder used. E.g. Watercolour graphite from Daniel Smith will not smudge, just like other watercolour colours. This Artgraf graphite is quite resistant to smudging, but it's not 100%. You will need to spray fixative on graphite to prevent smudging.

The packaging said it is erasable but I haven't been able to have any success with erasing the marks after it is dry. Is there a certain eraser or method to use?
@teohyc
@teohyc 8 лет назад
+Kristin Cozzolino What I mean is, it will smudge when erased, but it will not erase totally. It behaves like watercolour.

Hi. That looks like a fun medium :) To my surprise, I have found our local (South Korean) online shop has the Artgrah watercolor graphite and just ordered it. Have you tried to mix it with regular watercolor to have some colored tint? How is it compared to your sepia liquid pencil you did in other video on monochrome drawing? Thanks.
@teohyc
@teohyc 8 лет назад
+nabi767 Colours usually don't look nice when you mix watercolour with graphite. I prefer to use graphite or sepia alone for monochrome drawings.
@nabi767
@nabi767 8 лет назад
+Teoh Yi Chie I haven't used graphite before and I was wondering because Derwent has Graphitint color pencil lines. Does that mean you don't like the Derivan sepia liquid pencil, either?
@teohyc
@teohyc 8 лет назад
nabi767 The sepia liquid pencil is a bit too patchy for my liking. Anyway, graphite does not work well with watercolours because graphite's colour looks dead when used alongside watercolours.
@nabi767
@nabi767 8 лет назад
+Teoh Yi Chie Thanks for your opinion and introducing interesting art products. I have read a Derwent Graphitint review and he said at least try indigo one, unfortunately we don't sell Derwent color pencils individually here.

I can't tell if it forms a stable surface to be reworked upon cleanly in another medium or transported without smudging...
@teohyc
@teohyc 7 лет назад
It is quite permanent when dry. Of course if you erase hard, it going to smudge, but other than that it's really resistant to accidental touch. But I don't think other media will work well on it though.

Depends on which colour block you are carrying. People use graphite because they like the graphite look. There's also graphite in watercolour tube.

I'm not sure. I've not used the tube watercolour graphite before. Maybe the tube ones is easier to dissolve since it is softer.

Is it possible to use this graphite without water, like a pan pastel? If yes does it erase well?
@teohyc
@teohyc Год назад
It needs water to activate and re-activate. When dry, the graphite is almost permanent and does not rub off easily, just like watercolour.
@easilydistracted5192

eh, I use fixative over everything anyways :D Always scared to think what could happen to a watercolour painting if it got wet or stored in a humid area. plus the expensive schmincke stuff helps with my fading phobia.
