I love graphite but sometimes I'm not in the mood to shade with a pencil because it's very small compared to a brush. So I think this is ideal when you don't want to use inks or watercolors for tonal pieces

For the layering, I think I personally prefer the graphite over dried watercolor vs the other way around, but as a sketching/value tool on its own, that looks /so incredibly satisfying/ Like satisfying enough that I'll probably be buying some to play with because I'm absolutely here for it.

I love it everytime you post, no matter the content. Thank you for being you and for sharing your art, process, thoughts and enthusiasm. Love how the pieces turned out and I love sketching with water soluble graphite pencils with my watercolours. I also have a little sanding block so I can sand some water soluble graphite off of the pencil and then mix some of it into my watercolours on the palette and just experimenting with it like that

This blew my mind 0_0 I'd love to see a comparison/contrast of this stuff with ink stones, like the kind you grind with water to use in east Asian painting/calligraphy! Those can achieve different degrees of darkness by how dilute you make the ink, but it dries waterproof.... but obviously way less convenient in a grab-and-go sense... I'd love to hear your thoughts on it!

the first sketch reminds me so much of classical figurative sculptures (david, etc), just the way the graphite kinda dries flat. i like it! i'm not really a graphite/pencil person, but these look fun to try.

I've been using it for a couple of years and I love this art supply. I got two pencils and a tin, all different values and so much fun to play with. I have used them for studies, sketches, black and white portraits and full pieces with some watercolour and white gouache touches.

the graphite pencils i use most frequently are water soluble. its awesome for undersketches, since once most of it is erased it will disappear into the watercolor without tinting it, and im able to get some really interesting effects in my sketches. I got a dozen from Jerry's for like 6$ and they're amazing.

The way it looks reminds me of when I ink with a non-waterproof pen and I go over it with a wet paintbrush, I love that effect 😮 this would be so good for doing shading practice without using my watercolours or inking my drawing. I also wonder if you could make this the same way you make watercolours, like take a pack of mechanical pencil leads and grind them down to loose pigment to make some. Would it erase the same way? That may be a fun paint making experiment.

Just bought some of the Lyra crayons - bought some that weren't water soluble by accident (the US packaging makes them look very similar). Loving doing warmup sketching on big newsprint with them. Very satisfying to hold. The water soluble ones dissolve really well! Note they need a special sharpener!

using water soluble graphite (wiping the brush on the tip, personally) is the most important tool ive ever picked up. it perfectly compliments and enhances the textured shading i already do with mechanical pencil and happens to do a nice job of stopping some smudging before im able to seal it, if needed. go right into getting a dark value pencil, you can get full value range controlling how much you get on your brush. I have a Derwent 8B Dark Wash pencil, and since i wipe the tip, it alone will last years! recently ive found ways to use it with watercolor for certain vibes, but since generally the drawing is in greyscale, its a great rich result to use when experimenting with coloring scanned artwork digitally. overall its wonderful for training your hand for other water based mediums without fussing with color mixing quite yet, but absolutely valuable on its own

as someone who works smaller it was a delight to see this medium used with such a large brush, i really gotta try that. maybe ill bust open one of those pencils longways for a wider brush surface

I have a derwent set of watersoluble graphite pencils. I tend to use them more like a pencil and then use water when I want places to have a smooth texture. It's honestly one of my favorite things. It's really fun, but I haven't seen much on youtube with artists using this medium.

I have a few different pencils from art alternatives. I think they came in a paletteful box at one point and they were pretty fun! I have used paints with graphite mixed in (I think from Derwent) as well. It's very useful for quickly studying value, for sure. They're not really a supply I've done full pieces with before though! These turned out awesome and the process looks pretty close to watercolor -- so I might try them again soon!

I've been using the Derwent Graphitint pencils for a while now, both color and gray scale & I really enjoy it. The way I've been using them is to do a full sketch with it, usually I stick to one color at a time, & then add water to lighten or darken areas depending on the amount of water. I also like to do a sketch and then take a Tombow brush pen of the corresponding tone and blend out certain areas. It's fun to play with and helps with concept ideas for sure. I haven't made any large scale pieces but since I know it can get a little messy in my sketchbook I do use some kind of sealant once I feel like I'm done with a spread.

Thank you so much for this video. I benefited tremendously from it and immediately ordered the Lyra sticks. To me it’s the gospel of values and I’m totally impressed by your skills. It looks like you have a soft spot for the Chinese calligraphy brushes which I have a ton galore. I like your voice yet you don’t sound like a Western national. Hope I’m wrong. I prefer the Faber Castell Graphite Aquarelle pencils way more, than any other water soluble graphite, simply because of the performance and quality. ArtgGraf has some unique products but their water soluble graphite, looks always muddy and in some occasions uneven. Koh-I-Noor sells water soluble graphite, in a bottle with the thing long mouth, for precision. I like it more, than Art Graf

I have an old Derwent water soluble stick lying around for ages, that I only just started picking up again, and Derwent graphitint coming as part of a sample set. This video is nicely timed! You may not use it much compared to other media, but what you've done here is still very inspirational to me. Do you ever lay the graphite down on the paper first, before wetting it, or do you always use it as in this video: lifting the graphite with a brush, like a watercolour block? I've had smearing problems with the former method, might have to switch it up. I was under the impression that graphite hardness (or darkness) was based on how much clay or other filler was mixed with the powdered graphite during manufacture. Is that the case with this water-soluble graphite too? Does the Lyra have less filler than the Artgraf?

They all have applications that are unique and useful in some way. I've seen many artists use water soluable graphite for underpaintings for water based media since it's less noticable than regular graphite and if it's painted on it won't lift while if it's drawn on lightly it will dissapear without tinting the color too much. Acrylic painters tend to favor it more than watercolorists due to the opacity of acrylics!
