I put my cappings in a grain bag before pressing. put the cappings in the bag, into the press and the cleanup is easier. Thanks for posting

I think I could design one of these in CAD and then 3D print it in PET (food safe plastic) At the moment I use a potato ricer to masticate the wax cappings after draining, I then drain the honey from the masticated wax and let my bees process the remaining honey in the wax in small batches so that they get it before any robbing can take place.

I like to let the bees clean up all the wet cappings and they won't waste a drop of that sticky stuff. You can also throw all them cappings in a wash tub and add water to it an wash all the honey out of the cappings and then dip them out and put them in your wax melter and then feed wash water back to your bees. More ways to skin the cat and a bunch cheaper too!😁

I bought acorn single waxed and in general it's fine but the bees do make that crappy unwaxed frame wax about 10% of the time. Nice video!

Got the same press from Amazon, i have topbar hives and i think its great for foundationless bars. Wish i had started with making my topbar hives instead of langstroph

That's interesting! I was looking at one but went a different direction since we are limited on space. We grabbed some cappings spinner bags. I just fill them with cappings and put them in our extractor. It probably doesn't get as much wax out as that press though but it is pretty fast. You could probably make some good apple cider too though!

Bolt angle brackets to the legs and then to a piece of plywood or table to stabilize the press.

I have the red press and I use the paint strainer bags. No wax gets on the equipment. Check it out. I love my press, when i need it.

How much honey do you leave in the hives for the bees over the winter? I want to do this, but I don't want to starve the bees in the process

Very good question Makayla and the answer as with many things in beekeeping is, it depends and varies. The target weights going into winter should be about 70 lbs for a single deep and 90-100 lbs for doubles. You can choose to leave as much of their honey on the colony as you wish to meet these targets. Any honey that you take that drops the weights below these targets, should be replaced with heavy 2:1 syrup in the fall to get back up to target weight. I personally do not do a fall harvest, so whatever honey the bees make from a fall flow (if we even get one) is theirs to keep. Hope this helps! Cheers!

That’s a great question. I would estimate they are a little smaller than a #2 pencil.

Yep. Demand for local, raw, unfiltered honey is very high here and far outpaces the supply. It takes a lot of time, work, and effort to get that liquid gold into a bottle. We certainly aren’t going to just give it away. 😉😉 Thanks for watching!

We have Varroa Destructor mites in USA stopping alot of successful beekeeping. That Jack's up the honey price. Sadly Destructor mites are in Australia this year.

It’s compacted and clumped together. It comes out fairly easily. You just scoop it out. It’s stainless steel so it won’t rust. I just took a garden hose to it when done to get it clean. Pretty simple.

Actually, the honey continues to ooze out over time. As I said in the video, the press rendered a few pounds of honey. At $20 a pound, it will pay for itself quite quickly.
