Is King Tiger the ultimate wartime expression ot tank design? An armoured wunderwaffe that arrived just too late to turn the tide of the war? Or is it a delusional, dead-end design that wasted precious resources? The ultimate outgrowth of a deranged mania for ever heavier armour and bigger guns at any cost?
No idea. But Tiger II is in the latest Bulge: German release wave for Flames of War. Join me as we look at the plastic, a bit of history, and look at how Tiger II will perform on the table. The story of Tiger II is fascinating, but what does it have to do with Gefreiter Dinkelhoff or the Panzer Bucket?
Warning: I make mention of some Version 3 rules in this review - only because the review would not be complete without it. This is not an invitation to debate the superiority of one ruleset over another. That's SO 2017! It is just to highlight how differently the mechanics of tanks, and King Tiger in particular, are handled between them.

Thank you for the correct history of the turret variants, and for not propagating the "Henschel/Porsche turret" misunderstanding!

No problems. I got it wrong in my history section of the Zvezda King Tiger kit years ago, but I have gotten smarter since then. Next up is to correct the AVRE “290mm” projectile error.

Another great review Harry. As you say, outside campaigns it can be hard to include things like weather or maintenance. 😞

Yeah. I was watching a video recently that discussed hard factors vs soft factors in games. The "hard" factors are easy to model so these are easy to include in the game rules, but the "soft" factors often have a significant effect that is much harder to address.

Great video. I build and painted two od these so far. I was very curious about BF's Tiger II because there was a very good Tiger II kit in plastic so far. Aslo had BF made this in resin/metal before. Anyway they were able to make this plastic kit that bit better. Even if one has enough Tiger IIs for gaming so far this is a great box to have. Recomended. Just one addition. The hatch at the back of the turret was not made for loading shells. (It turned out it could be used for that.) The main design idea was, that the gun could be removed that way very easily for maintenance or to replace it. You find the same hatch on the "Jagdpanther" which had the same gun for the same reason.

Ah. Yes. I did know that about the hatch, now that you mention it. It’s the same for the hatch on the back of the Challenger turret for the British. But big hatches are also good for long shells!

Great presentation with some great stock footage to inspire the painting.

Wish V4 allowed for more interaction with the King Tiger. Seems like almost every weakness (besides flanking which could be a challenge) has gone away. I suppose the only drawback happens to be less models on the table. The Ferdinand/Elephant pose a similar challenge, but are less capable of being used offensively.

The removal of the limitations in the current King Tiger stats did give me pause. I was also sad that Bulge British removed the halted rate-of-fire 3 and Semi-Indirect Fire rules for Challenger. Maybe I just need a German force.

Kit looks fantastic. I'm still undecided about the way its presented in the game, streamlining out the penalising rules and so on. I guess that's v4 in a nutshell - less granular, more abstracted.

Thank you. It was a fun kit. I just don't want to face off against any on the table!

Great video and excellent selection of period footage. I remember you did one on the Zvesda model. How do they compare side by side? One of the big miss from BF here are the decals, they could have made the iconic and colourful oversized numbers the tigers II had in the ardennes.
@misterballista

Comparison pics always a good idea. BF tend to over thick gun barrels for the sake of robustness so I suspect the Zvezda one might look a bit underfed in comparison.

Hey guys. I do have a review of the Zvezda King Tiger. I tend not to do comparison videos anymore. Battlefront have proven sensitive to direct comparisons, so I’ve stopped doing them. It doesn’t make a lot of sense these days. Battlefront make great products that stand up to comparisons. But I think they remember the very early days when Plastic Soldier Company had the lead on plastics. Since then, BF have become very experienced with plastic kit design and manufacture. These days I avoid direct comparisons in reviews of BF products as a courtesy.

@@FogofWar does Battlefront sponsor your channel? If not your hesitation makes no sense. I don't need a "is this better than that" but rather a "this is how they compare scalewise", so they might fit side by side in same army or not. Thanks for your hard work any way!

@@AsgeirrSpjuth Battlefront do not sponsor my channel, but I rely on good relations with manufacturers to be able to get answers to queries, ask about new releases and so on.
