Fog of War discusses the tabletop miniatures war-games Flames of War, World War III:Team Yankee and other titles in that game family from Battlefront. Our mission is to explore rules and tactics, discuss and review new products and look at painting, terrain and lists.
I've got 7 of them. They aren't competitive but there is a way of fielding 6 or 7 in your 100 pt force, using the formation in the Bulge book. There is a command card which lowers the points, you take the in formation AA tanks and if I remember right armoured infantry and the Drilling halftracks. Not a list for tournaments but if you wanted a friendly game with sub par forces, it could be fun
Like most german armoured vehicles of the era, the AA fitting used the hull MG34 and was intended for use on road marches only, which is why it can't be used as a self defence AA.
These are definitely a step up in details over my existing zvezda jagdtiger fleet, which I purchased to replace and retire my older command decision metal jagdtigers (which were not very good models). Rather than replace though, perhaps supplement as the zvezda models are honestly pretty good if lacking in stowage and hatch options. I started a whole German army back in V3 just for jagdtigers; they were extreme and just a trio of them could fill out points in an army list to make a low-model count fun extra army. Now in V4 Bulging Germans, you can make a much bigger, better force including them without it feeling like a gimmick. Particularly, with a command card you can take the 512 company and get a 2 point discount per jagtiger which makes them quite attractive, as you can now afford things like some mortars or volksgrenadiers, or best of all: MORE JAGDTIGERS.
If these are your third set of Jagdtigers, you are *very* dedicated! I quite liked the Zvezda Jagdtiger kit - but it does have the limitations of a snap-fit kit.
Jagdtiger talking to Maus tank: "Haha, I am not the most ridiculous tank of WW2!" 😉 Nice video. Build and painted one. Great kit. And if even 3 Jagdtigers too much for your force you can purchase a two vehicle box in the Clash of Steel range by BF.
The pricing on the Battlefront website is very odd. You can buy 1 sprue for £8, the clash of steel box with 2 for £16 or the flames of war box with 3 (and a decal sheet) for £32. The decal sheet is therefore worth £8.
@@rorythomas9469 Yeah. The prizing is a bit odd. But I guess most wargamers have decals at home. And the decal sheet that comes with the three vehicle box has just division markings, not markings for a tank hunter bataillon at all.
That’s an interesting viewpoint. I consider myself a “historical” player because I try and use lists that align with real units and TO&E. Even tactics where the game system allows it. I suspect you are making a cynical comment about the ruleset. There are certainly abstraction in the game, and mechanics that simplify or abstract real-world tactical considerations. It’s a game, not a simulation. Any game has to decide on a balance it is comfortable with between realism and playability. Clash of Steel and World of Tanks draw this line in different places than Flames of War. You need to find the game system that strikes the right balance for you.
@@FogofWar There are no official Battlefront products that depict historical scenarios/OOBs with any attempt at accuracy and completeness, their products typically ship with/provide as options only tanks and a few support units, many starter sets not even including infantry - not a complete line of products that would allow a true historical OOB at anything except perhaps a very small unit level. If you look at the multitude of pictures of FOW games, and the competition games you can see if you have the opportunity to attend events with FOW players, they look like tank parking lots. I see no attempt at historic realism from Battlefront. I get that it is a game - a non-historical game that uses a subset of actual historical weaponry. I have played FOW more than once and the experience established my opinion. By all means have fun playing FOW if it is your cup of tea, but don't kid yourself about it being historically accurate. Not trying to hate on you, I just thought it highly ironic to hear you say "historical".
(6:52) Timestamp that is a Panther A (early variant) You can tell by the cupola being from an (A) turret but the body is still the same as the (D) shown by no ball turret, the later variant had the ball turret. Then replaced by the (G). Just something I learned from some time ago.
The Maus is already available in Flames of War through the Late War Leviathan’s PDF released recently. It’s on Battlefront’s website if you want to download it.
The M113 Fire Support Vehicle was uniquely Australian. The US never fielded it. So unless you can take this as a support choice, I think the answer would be no.
Awesome video very nice touch with the bit of history as well. Please more of these videos about team yankee kits and maybe painting tutorials. You have my sub!
Excellent overview of the changes and thankfully most of the video dedicated to just that, rather then 90 minutes of "games we've been playing" before getting to the 10 minutes on DP that one channel did!! Well presented, interesting discussion and the spread sheets were excellent for for aiding understanding. Be interesting to see how this all plays out once they publish the final version but at the moment, for me at least, no WTF! moments 🤣
@@FogofWar Seriously, yours is minimal plus it’s interesting and relevant. I’ve listened to some other channels and thought “we’re 90 minutes in and talked about everything BUT the subject matter”.
I build and painted SIX british 40mm Bofors on trucks for my friend's british... the old resin/metal ones. Metal guns. What can I say? -) One got a tooth pick barrel -) I am so happy that six all you can get. 😉
I wish they had just split TY into 'early' and 'late' war lists. I don't think dynamic points is fixing he underlying problem. Time will tell where the new meta ends up.
Yeah. We discussed that in the Team Yankee Dynamic Points livestream. Early/Mid/Late would help, but it might be too late to make that work with all the published books that would change. I guess the DP is another way to address this.
@@Subcomandante73 This depends on how you look at things. If we go stricly by years, Team Yankee is 1984 - around 1995 or lets be generous and say 1990 with a war ongoing tech would have developed faster. So yes, by this Checkpoint Charlie is NOT Team Yankee. But if people say "We want early Team Yankee", most mean, they want a Cold War gone hot with "1. gen" MBTs. The 1. gen/early time line would be Checkpoint Charlie (1961) - Nam (1963-72) and Fate of a Nation 1967. Using that logic 1961 is very early, lets expand shis a bit and say ~1960-75, when Leo 1, M60, T-55 and Chieftains were the new stuff and M48 or Centurions were already getting older (and got upgraded to keep up). With a "mid war" being 1975(+)-1985, when the next generation of tanks entered service, basically what we had for Team Yankee V1. So by the logic of "Team Yankee" early war can not exist, but this is what people want more. In game terms, there is not a staggering difference between a Leopard 2 A4 and A5, but between a Leopard 1 and a Leopard 2 this is the case, so this would be, where a split would be interesting.
So, the Aussie one goes on the bustle rack. The original M1 didn’t have one at all. An interim one was added to the hull rear for a while before they settled on the bustle ravk.
What options from this kit could you use to most closely model a South African Olifant? I thought it would be interesting against the new Cuban forces. Thanks.
I'm not an expert in South African tanks, but it looks like a 20-pdr armed, Meteor-engined build would work as a Mk.1, while a Continental-engined, 105mm-armed would work as a Mk.2. After that, you'd need to 3D-print the correct turret, I think. Hope that helps.
Awesome 👏 video as always Harry… I like it at first glance I immediately thought cross between King Tiger and Maus … I would almost guarantee that the E-100 will find its way into Clash of Steel … if it makes it into FOW that would be great… I would absolutely love a Hardcover Late war Leviathans… I would even Like to see a smaller formation maybe Qty . 2 or 3 of all the super heavy Tanks for all the Nations for specific use as Wildcard options in the Bulge and Berlin Formations and why not stretch it out into Team Yankee… Let us play with All the new Toys in All the Games
You have great excitement and enthusiasm there! As a historical player, I’d be cautious about folding too much prototype and fantasy stuff into Flames of War, but having the option for people who do want to is great.
Assuming BF / GF9 releases it on a sprue, this will definitely be in my Clash of Steel games and possibly even make a custom card for Tanks. I never bought into World of Tanks, seems like a duplicate of what I already have. Excellent video as always !
@@FogofWar I would think so but I'll likely make up my own numbers. Fortunately the people I play with are good sports so won't complain if it is overpowered. And if so, I'll just make a new one !
Yeah. The assembly was a bit rough in places. It can be variable on the pre-assembled kits. That’s why I’d prefer to build one from scratch. At least any screw-ups are my screw-ups that way!
The Centurion is just a beast of a tank, I know the T54/55 family is still in widespread service but the Centurion was build to fight and survive and just look at the carnage it caused fielded by the Israelis.
Harry… Top notch performance from you as always… and I must say that the T-44 is a Sexy Beast… I may have to proxy enough of the turret sprues to make all my existing T-55s into T-44s … I sure hope The T-44 makes it into Checkpoint Charlie or maybe even a PDF to get these late war Leviathans into Team Yankee
Eric - I have always had a soft spot for the T-44. However I did enjoy the new T-54-1 as well. I expect these will work in Checkpoint Charlie if it ever makes an appearance.
I would love to see what a T-44 and IS-3 equipped unit would do against standard German and allied opponents, how these vehicles could have entirely been used in WW2 even without extending it to 1946.
@@FogofWar Yeah, the Germans either get cancelled vehicles that were never due for mass production of completely fictional amalginations like Panther II being a combination of a new production type hull, a smaller turret and a larger gun that all cannot work with eachover due to the fact it all literall collides with eachover. The US gets vehicles that were far too heavy to actually transport across the atantic or make bridges that could let them cross rivers, honourable exceptions to the T28/T95 which got cancelled and the T29/30/34 series of technology demonstrators again not intended for service.
Very nice review. The T-44 is no Super Tank in Late War. I think one could use some saying it is a "Troop Trial Unit" in a normal game of FoW. To me the T-44 is - when it comes to histirical accuracy - the same as the RAM in the british Bulge book. BTW: Build and painted two and like them. I also like the T-54-1 because now there is a model available which is clearly a T-54. T-54s in FoaN or NAM are the usual T-55 kit. Now my egyptians can get some "real" T-54s, although they never got the T-54-1.
There were three units issued T-44, but they were trials units and not used in action. I’m sure it wouldn’t take much imagination to craft a quasi-historical scenario where these were used operationally.
I Love your reviews and I have a soft spot for these late war post war tank developments especially T-44 , T54's , can not wait to try the 'Doom Turtle' attacking the Siegfried Line and a bit of fun what 'if' battles late & post war....not sure but didn't General Patton want to push further East ? Oh and a big Thank you about the Free late war Leviathan PDF ...I didn't know there was one available . Looking forward to my delivery of Soviet / American Clash of Steel , Thanks again for another great product review
Great Review as always Harry… I appreciate your review as I am still waiting for my Pre Orders of Both the Starter Sets …They sold out so fast in the U.S. I had to order mine from Canada… this unboxing went into further detail than others I have seen… Super excited about them and I have already downloaded and printed the PDF and have added it to the FOW Library… I get the purist not wanting these Monsters in the Game … But man how fun 🤩 it would be to use the Wildcard Slot on a Bulge Sherman formation and throw in a couple of T-28s … Surprise 😮 the German opponent who thought his King Tigers were going to steal all the glory…I’m not a Purist and I am a Huge Fan of the Original TANKS game from GF9 … It’s taken Years but I have acquired nearly every expansion for TANKS … I enjoy the game with my much younger nephews… They love coming over to Uncle Rick’s house to Play TANKS … This Clash of Steel Game is going to take it up a notch… and it can be the stepping stone for them between TANKS and FOW
I love the idea of the kids coming to Uncle Rick’s to play tanks. My best friend’s kids played Tanks and FoW when they came to visit. People play for different reasons, and historical gamers are drawn to FoW by history, in many cases. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t a place for ahistorical and fun games too. PS. The Australian distributor has a pile of starter sets they can’t shift. I know that doesn’t help you. But it might help Adam after I stole this one from him.
This one baffles me. It's USA, Britain and Germany vs the Soviets, and the Soviets are absolutely awful. As you said, part of the problem is that the Soviets are given real tanks and everyone else gets... well in my opinion they get fantasy rainbow Magical Mega-Ultra Invincible tanks. So you can spend a fortune collecting Soviets to have a force that's absolute shite, or you can play one of the cool factions that have fun things. Thus everyone is going to play the Allied Ubermenschen and sit around twiddling their thumbs I suppose? I guarantee that Flames of War would have been a failure too if the Germans were garbage and no one wanted to play them.
It is a problem. The tank that looks wonderful on paper will always look better than the real thing that proved to have limitations - even limitations like the laws of physics that paper tanks don't have to deal with! They do make the Soviets cheap to try and balance it. However there are fun things like IS-7, T-10 and so on coming for the Russians. Maybe this will help? But the Soviets are the underdogs as the game stands at launch.
Hehehe... I bought this box too and the first to tanks I build and painted were the T-44/T-54-1. 😉 I like the upgrade kit. They made a thight and good fit. Also the AA MG on the T-54-1 might get in trouble when handling the tank on the gaming table. I don't think it is a game for me. But I can be a nice game for people entering the hobby. Just build yourself some tanks to move them around and shot at each other. And because historical miniaturewargaming - and in the end "Clash of Stell" is some kind of history, alternate history but many people love that - is a niche within a niche we should welcome everyone who wants to join. No gatekeeping please!!! I also like that the "Clash of Steel" range gives you the posibility to buy tanks in less vehicle boxes, i.e. a box of 3 Centurions or 2 Jagdtigers. If you need less you can go and purchase these (yeah, BF won't like that). Did I say "Great review"? No I didn't... Great review, Harry.
Thank you for the considered and "with added history" unboxing I have been doing my own campaign, using Tanks and Tanks:Modern, going from 1930s vehicles to 1980s, purely AFV with off table artillery and infantry seen as abstracts Using an extension of the idea of A Very British Civil War, but set in Australia, with Republicans vs Monarchists, so early battles had Lees and T-34s and Stuarts vs Crusaders and M13s with Valentines in both sides Most recent had T-55s vs AMX30, AMX/AUF1 and AMX10 I would love for GF9 to sell a ruleset along the Clash of Steel lines, covering WW2 to Cold War Unrealistic having AFVs only, but it would, I think, be fun
@@FogofWar cheers. I have some WW1 Americans, a "Great War" boxed set that should start me off with Infantry and field artillery for a more realistic setting
I was hesitant with this at first. Ended up getting this very starter set. I am a tank person and love good armor on armor action. Thank you for this video! I am a big Flames and Team Yankee player. Something about the “what if” and fantasy aspect of these tanks has always appealed to me that luckily goes beyond my realism mentality and into the heart of a table top player. Can’t wait to get games in at my FLGS!
This is great. I am putting together a set of Armageddon Steel Legion Leman Russ tanks, and I needed to know what kind of numbers I should put on these tanks, and where. This is good because now I have a starting point, and I can put a 40k spin on it. (Namely roman numerals)
I think this kit isnt actually the 4D Models version, as that one doesn't have decals, but has a star painted on the sides of the turret. This one looks to be from XF CC Lee Models, which is apparently the same company, but a better quality version of the 4D Model ZTZ-99A. I have the 4D and the kits look very similar on sprues, with the 4D having painted detail, shinier plastic and comes with a metal wire. The product box is also different.
Hey there, really really late here, and I must say I’m not British, nor have I ever served, but for a late Cold War setting, could you use the Challenger 1 instead of the chieftain?
Challenger I was in service from 1983 until 2001 with the British army. So plenty of scope for using them in the late Cold War. If you are asking why my force didn’t use them, they hadn’t been released for Team Yankee back then.
