Here's something special for all you #Canon RF shooters out there. The Canon RF 24-105 F2.8L IS USM Z arrives as part of Canon's new Z lens range that is specifically designed for hybrid shooters, offering the very best for both Canon filmmakers and photographers.
A big part of this launch is that this is the World's first ever 24-105mm f2.8 lens. We're used to a maximum f4 from lenses like this and while it may not seem like much, those couple of extra stops are going to make a huge difference to your ability to shoot in lower light environments and play with shallow depth of field.
George took this lens to Richmond Park in London to check out all the amazing features of this lens and to give his two cents on how this lens performs and who he thinks this lens is targeted at.

while I appreciate that he probably had the lens for only a short period of time, I'm suprised that he spent that time taking pictures of animals outside when he said himself that it's main benefit will be for event photography in poor light. Even if the time was limited, a few model shots in natural light indoors would have been more informative.

Mind you: that extra 35 mm is significant and handy on the long end, but really no that much. 24 to 120 would be better. Or 35 to 150 (like the Tamron). You can crop from 70 to 105 as well. Difference is there, but it is not huge.

Great review, and the shots of the deer look good! One tiny critique: several times, you mention you get a few more stops of light, but going from f/4 to f/2.8 is only 1 stop. So as in the past, when people were deciding between the 24-70 and the 24-105, I think depth of field and lens sharpness are more important than how bright/fast the lens is. On a modern mirrorless, 1 stop of difference is really not that major in most cases. The IBIS wobble at 24mm scares me a bit - overall it looks smooth, but in your example, the edges wobble quite a lot.

Canon should have went that route. I would never use a 24-105mm F/2.8 as an event gig lens unless it was the only lens i have on me. Otherwise, I stick to 2 zoom lenses on 2 bodies.
@vinvanid
@vinvanid 9 месяцев назад
@@harryvuemedia5106 No, 24-105 way more useful than 35-150. You can't replace 24mm with 35mm but you can replace 150 with 105mm by little cropping. Event photographers will like 24-105 more than 35-150.
@harryvuemedia5106
@harryvuemedia5106 9 месяцев назад
@@vinvanid I'm an event photographer and I don't use any of those focal lengths. I prefer to use 2x camera bodies with Cam A housing a 24-70mm F/2.8 and Cam B housing the 70-200mm F/2.8. 2 lighter lenses that allows me to reach and shoot so much more. Like i said, the only time someone will use a 24-105mm if its on a video camera or its their only camera for the event.

there are so many scenarios where such lens might be a "life saver". For me, as a mobile videographer using motorcyckles alot, such lens is space saver. Instead of carring 24-70 and 70-200 i would go with 24-105 and still having space for drone or other gear which i would have to give up.

Would you consider this a travel lens? I was about to purchase the 24-105mm F4 when this was announced. The F4 is compact and lighter than the F2.8 so easier to handle. The F2.8 is tempting but would it really make a great travel lens? I’m still debating it.

8:46 In what strange universe does f/2.8 provide "an extra few stops of light" over an f/4? And why are you telling us how useful this is when not a single shot in the entire freaking video seems to depend on it? You just seem to be motormouthing without a thought as to whether what you're saying is actually correct. Pro-tip: rather than TELL us how useful this f/2.8 is, you could perhaps SHOW us. What is wrong with you that you extol this f/2.8 at length without actually showing a single shot where at f/4 the ISO noise would be more noticable, or the background would be too much in focus, or some such? I get the feeling you put no thought or care into this and are just racing to get a video out fast to sell your ad views. It's really disappointing to see this.
@lqr824
@lqr824 9 месяцев назад
Yes, 24 all the way to 105 IS fantastic for events, but I've shot the RF24-105/4 since about the day it came out for that reason. To make a case for this new lens, you can't just sell it on the focal range, one needs to additionally justify having the f/2.8 across that range, and I think that's a lot harder sell. The f/2.8 zooms were NECESSARY in the 90s and 00s: even the top camera's AF wouldn't work completely without f/2.8, the display brightness depended on big aperture, pictures were far lower quality (due to bad AF, film grain, poorer lenses, camera motion, subject motion) so we tended to distribute photos in far smaller size, so the background blur of f/2.8 was helpful to make the subject pop from the background in a photo only 10cm/4" across. Nowadays even social media photos are 38cm/15" across, the AF is perfect on the eye, the sensor noise is almost nonexistent, we have IS and IBIS to cancel camera motion, and sky-high ISO lets us freeze subject motion. Given the huge images we now display, and the fact the subject is so clear, even the milder bokeh of f/4 suffices, I think most of the time. So while f/2.8 WAS necessary up to say 10 years ago, it simply isn't, yet people still treat it as the gateway to pro shooting. I myself have used f/2.8 "trinity" of zooms from 1995 or so, but for the R and now R5, I've only used f/4 and the 72mm aperture 100-500. (For zooms, more than f-stop, aperture gives a better measure of bokeh I think.)
@rgraham-ncal
@rgraham-ncal 9 месяцев назад
Well this saves me a lot of writing. Most of my shots on 24-105 F4 simply couldn't be any sharper, and the bokeh is gorgeous. Many photographers are just stuck on the fallacy that you need an F2.8 lens to take great pictures. Simply not true.
@lqr824
@lqr824 9 месяцев назад
@@rgraham-ncal Thanks for hearing me out and nice to see someone that agrees. I love the 24-105 and shot with it almost exclusively for three years. If I rated the 135/1.8 as a 10 and 100-500 @ 100-135 as a 9.5, then the 100 would be a 9, 50/1.8 an 8.8 and 24-105/4 an 8.5. On one hand, it actually is the least-sharp RF I've tested, and yet, the difference is so small I can't think of a case where it really matters. As you say the bokeh is really nice, and sufficient unless you want the photo to be "bokeh as a special effect." And in that case, f/2.8 isn't enough, you need f/1.4, f/1.2, etc.
@raksh9

@lqr824

@falxonPSN
@falxonPSN 8 месяцев назад
@@lqr824 EXACTLY! A lot of people are obsessed with f/2.8 lenses, and they have their use cases, but with modern sensors, the use case is primarily "I need the smoothest possible bokeh at focal length XXX." Which is perfectly fine, but for most people, that's too many compromises to get that. What interests me more about this is that my only 24-XX lens is the EF 24-105, so if I am buying an RF version, this is the one I would get, since it's effectively parfocal and has better IS than the f4 version; plus, the extra lens function buttons are handy. I also like the fully non-extending barrel for durabillity/sealing quality. But I'm not kidding myself that it's going to make my lower-light stuff 200% better. Especially with how trivial it is to remove noise with Topaz AI tools these days.

@@Buhisyes and no, regarding light levels it's 2.8, but the depth of field is F4. Since it's an APS-C lens, the ISO performance will be worse, therefor you'll absolutely have light downsides. But the lens itself is 2.8 light wise

It's depth of field is more than F4 due to Canon having 1.6x APS-C*
