Defunct Games reviews Clockwork Aquario by ININ Games and Westone Games, available December 14 on PlayStation 4 and Switch.
After being canceled a quarter-century ago, Clockwork Aquario has finally been completed and is available for all to see. This early-1990s side-scrolling action game is all about slapping enemies and tossing them around colorful stages filled with gorgeous pixel graphics. But while it's exciting to finally be able to play this long-abandoned game on modern consoles, I was ultimately disappointed by the short length and easy difficulty. Couple that with the shallow gameplay and you have an uneven action game that gets a tepid recommendation, mostly for the novelty and nostalgia. No matter what, I'm just happy that Clockwork Aquario is finally real and actually exists.

QotD: There's probably a hundred better choices, but I really wanted to continue with D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die. It's a shame we only got the first chapter.

D4 was a damn good game!

I think you're right; I don't care if this is short & simplistic, and it definitely scratches an itch :) I mean, as far as an _arcade_ platformer goes, this all checks out - it looks about on par with games like Top Hunter or Spin Master. Limited mechanics, straightforward stage design, focus on spectacle. Its easy to see these mechanics and think it would've been better off if they shifted the platform to the Genesis, 32X or Saturn (depending on the timing) and expanded what you can do with the whole "picking up and throwing stunned enemies" thing (it's similar to what Klonoa does, after all), but there really aren't enough arcade platformers out there, so this kinda thing is always welcome in my book. Though all the points made here are totally fair. Still looking forward to checking this out though. QOTD: Starcraft Ghost is a _damn_ good choice, Cyril, ESPECIALLY if you played Metal Arms: Glitch in the Systems. Blizzard bought that Swingin' Ape Studios to finish that one; it really should've been fantastic, but I honestly thought it looked better when Nihilistic was working on it. I... just don't know what happened there, but it is definitely sad. I've got weird choices, but honestly, I would've liked to see 3 games come out. The first one is "Project HAGGAR" or that Halo Megabloks game by N-Space; the next is RiQA by Bits Studio, a third person Syphon Filter-esque shooter with a "western anime" style that I really would've liked to see come out back in the day, especially because Bits did the _UNBELIEVABLE_ Warlocked RTS on Game Boy Color which is just like... it's literally hard to believe someone made an RTS on the freakin' Game Boy and it was SO good; the final game I would've liked to see come out was Tenth Degree, a 3D Fighter by Atari-Midway that would've come out after MACE and BioFreaks that also had a "western anime" style going on. And again, I really just thought the N64 could've used it, as an N64 kid. It genuinely looked pretty decent in location test/MAME footage, and you just know Eurocom or Saffire would've been contracted for the port and they would've done a bang-up job bringing it to the N64 like they did with their other ports of Atari-Midway '90s Voodoo FX arcade games.

I was just thinking of that trailer for the cancelled game the other day.

Short shallow and cheap boss fights was pretty much the course for arcade games of the era. Been looking forward to this and know what to expect. QOTD, unfinished game i'd like to see is that 32x Castlevania.

I've been playing brown and gray Xbox 360 games recently and seeing how colorful this game is really makes it insane to think there was an entire generation of games that didn't use color.

StarCraft Ghost!!!! Yeah I know you mentioned it but as a huge fan of StarCraft back then I was crushed when it was finally and officially cancelled. Once Activision Blizzard has a complete culture overhaul I would be ecstatic to see them release it.

QOTD: Shenmue! No, seriously, I still want an ending. On a completely different note, having received the Evercade VS Founders Edition, I have been introduced to Biomechanical Toy. Boy, does that game need more coverage!

Oh and sorry for the additional comment but I'd also love to see Interplay (or whomever has the riggts now) release the sequel to Star Trek: Judgment Rites. Great video as always!!!

This does look kinda interesting, but only on Switch and PS4, no PC ports, sadly, won't be able to play it yet. As for the question, one I could think of, which may be finished, but was never released due to all the online Karens was GamerGirl. Really wanted to try it out, looked interesting from the trailer, but the Karens complaining caused Wales Interactive to pull the plug on releasing it. Bloody hell.

Just emulate it on PC with ryujinx or yuzu, I'm sure you can find a dump of it now or in the near future

This is a good example of people wanting what they can't have and psyching themselves up in their heads, making it more than it is in reality. It's just a middling arcade game from the 90s

I just found out about this today. An unreleased Sega title from the time of the Sega Saturn...SOLD! The game is only 10 bucks right now. It's on the Xbox One/Xbox One X/Series S/Series X/PS4/PSPRO/PS5/Switch/Steam Deck. Addendum- Have you all noticed how many Sega Saturn games are showing up on the Series X (and some on the PS5)? It's ludicrous, and so far, I have all of them save for one (VF2). I own so many copies of that game I don't need another one. ;)

And they're trying to charge $20 for this. I don't understand these publishers. It should be no more than $4.99. Their sales would more than double. With this price, nobody but hardcore retro gamers who love obscure games will buy it. And they prefer physical media so who is this for?
@DefunctGames
@DefunctGames 2 года назад
Considering the amount of work that went into it, I'm fine with $20. A lot of the ININ Games I review tend to be in the $40 - $60 range, so this is a steal.

@@DefunctGames What work? The game was pretty much finished. The rest of us aren't going to spend $20 for a 30 minute arcade game that's digital-only. That's ridiculous and insulting. Nobody will buy this at that price.
@DefunctGames

They had to completely remake the graphics and visuals. Based on what the developer has said, most of the visuals were lost and had to be recreated. One of the only things ready to go was the music. I feel like people today are used to paying $20 for smaller games. And those who aren't will wait for a sale and get it for $10. If you start the price at $5, then there's nowhere to go during sales and promotions.

@@gaylordfocker7990 "it was pretty much finished" I don't think the game was worth all this pomp and circumstance but that's simply not true
