I don't think that's a actual Triad lock it doesn't have the Stop pin when open

I was sure the older Cold Steel webpage for this knife said it was a Tri-Ad. Their newly revised website has quite a bit less information on each knife than they used to post.

It's a rocker lock with a back up safety. They improved the rocker lock no liners. This knife is tough. This was meant to be a heavy duty work knife as Lynn Thompson would say. Watch the video how they test it.

A lil late to the party though I have a few comments that others may or may not find relevant.... Apologies if mentioned prior as I did not read previous comments, however the Bush Ranger Lite DOES NOT have the Tri-Ad lock system, instead using the very capable Rocker-Lock/Lockback system. This is easily verified as if you look into the knife from the semi-deployed position, looking straight into knife with blade pointed to the floor, you'll notice that the Bush Ranger Lite does not have the signature horizontal stop-pin of the Tri-Ad lock system. If you do a side by side comparison of the BRL to say, the SR1 Light(my back-up Patrol EDC folder) or any other Tri-Ad lock model, you'll notice this difference. As a National Ski Patroller, I have carried the BRL as my Patrol folder EDC for 3+ years and have put it through its paces in about every outdoor situation that one would encounter on a mountain. It's an excellent knife, a superb value at its price point and though this is an individual opinion, the plastic over hang that you spoke of(6:25) that sits proud over the frame in the top/rear blade position where one's thumb may sometimes sit, has never interfered with or cause any discomfort when I've had to press down hard, which I have on many occasions. I've been using the knife in this capacity for 3+ years and it's just a great robust EDC for those that do more than open letters, boxes and clean their nails with their EDC's😉 Stay Well & Continued Success🍻 RP

@@CanadianCuttingEdge Yah, regardless, my comment was directed more towards those that are not that familiar with the Tri-Ad system, with all of the Tri-Ads having the horizontal cross stop-pin. Continued Success🍻 RP

Terribly typical for Cold Steel - and too many other brands too. They don't seem to realize that we are wanting to buy a good knife not looking to be advertising zombies for them.

I own a few CS knives but not the Bush Ranger Lite, but it seems that all of CS knives have the same locking system. Which I'm not complaining about, because it is a very powerful lock, but I love a liner lock system, it just makes handling a knife more enjoyable for me. I often use my knife like a fidget toy:)
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge 3 года назад
It may technically not be a Tri-Ad lock but the Tri-Ad lock really is just a lock back system with a tiny tweak (in my opinion). I like a back lock for a hard use knife but for EDC I am more than happy with a liner lock too.

I love cold steel knives but this is one I will be avoiding due to the price personally being high for the materials used. I would rather spend the $200 on the S35VN bush ranger
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge 3 года назад
I find the price to be quite low for the materials used, generally speaking. if they would have put robust screws in the handle it would have gotten a clear recommendation from me. In my opinion it is the Bush Ranger that is over priced. I have had other well made knives with S35VN that are just a bit over half the price of the Bush Ranger. That's the thing about knives, there is no single opinion that is "right". It all depends on perspective of the individual.

Congratulations Becky. Hi Jake and Bandit. I had this knife BUT the fit and finish was horrible , primary grinds and secondary grinds were all wonky the scales even though injection molded were extremely uneven the secondary slide lock was loose and after tightening was inoperable. I only paid $30 including delivery but it was free returns so I returned it . It's not a Tri ad lock just a regular lock back / spine lock with a secondary slide lock , the Tri Ad lock has a stop pin that the blade and lock wrap around plus the additional strength of the lock pivot pin. A regular lock back/spine lock doesn't had a stop pin , the blade stops against the lock arm , also the lock arm pivot pin is the only pin to provide stopping of the blade. I loved the aesthetics and feel of the knife so I eventually bought the Premium Bushranger , is a much better knife , I paid $109 making it my most expensive knife and I would say that for the money against diminishing returns it is totally worth the extra money for the Premium Bushranger if you like the design. As far as Cold Steel brand , I own more Cold Steel by far than any other brand and not just their knives , so as far as Quality Control , just because my Bushranger lite was shotty doesn't mean they all are . I have had a fair amount of issues with Cold Steel products but most if them have been Perfect so if you can buy them with free returns just in case. Thanks for another great review , sorry jf I have rambled and ranted , sometimes I can't help my incessant jiba jaba. Thanks

I’m less & less impressed with Cold Steel quality control. Last month I bought 3 of their knives from Amazon, all in the budget range. One came with such a loose pivot that the knife literally rattled if I shook it. That was fixed with a drop of Loctite and a turning of the pivot screw. But the second problem, on a medium Luzon, was more significant. The blade came with a ding in the middle of the blade edge where incorrect tolerances allow the blade, upon closing, to travel too far and strike a metal spacer or pin that helps hold the sides of the handle together. An email to Cold Steel’s website a week or so ago about this issue has thus far brought no response. I own several Cold Steel products, but I think I’ll add no more, especially if my email never brings a response.

@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge 3 года назад
Yes, 8Cr13MoV doesn't hold an edge as well as premium steel does, but the other side of it is that it can be sharpened more easily, even with a simply hand stone. I am one of those guys who doesn't like serrated blades. For me serrations are for bread knives and not much more.

I love mine, except for that switch thingy in the handle. Yes, it is redundant, and had a tendency to rust if left wet.
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge 2 года назад
Ah, so that silly lock thing has either some carbon steel or some very low end stainless steel in its components. One of my favourite knife companies is Sanremu and the sometimes put silly extra locks on knives too. It doesn't make sense to me. Its extra expense and complexity for very little usefulness. I grew up on slip joints and friction knives and the methods of using those knives keeps me more than save on a locking folder. I have only ever had one locking folder fail during use, and I only noticed it when I went to close the knife, so I was never really at risk, because my father taught me to treat every knife as though it was able to close if there was pressure on the spine of the blade, and it has kept me safe from accidental closure of the knife.

As has already been pointed out, this not a TriAD lock, which Lynn Thompson said during this model's release. You should have noticed that during disassembly. therefore the secondary lock, Lynn is big on secure lockup. My secondary lock does not have the issues yours has, and I have none of the lockup bar wiggle you have. Mine has a smooth transition from the swedge to the spine. If you haven't seen it already, Gideonstactical did a really good comparison of the two Bush Rangers. All that being said, good review.
