I recently had a chance to try out three new speakers from Marshall; the Tufton, Kilburn II, and the Stockwell II. I got to play around with each of them to see what they sound like, how easy they are to use and what sets them apart from each other.
Marshall Tufton is the largest and most powerful speaker in this range, followed by the Kilburn II, and then the Stockwell II is the smallest and most compact. In the spirit of 'go big or go home', I unboxed the Tufton first to get things started.
Marshall Tufton
I review a lot of speakers and most of the time I power them up and play them for a while and get to know them then make a pronouncement about like or dislike. The second I turned on the Marshall Tufton, it was as if Dave Ghrol kicked in my door with the rest of the Foo Fighters and unleashed a live show in my living room.
I actually stopped and turned to look at it, mouth agape. The sound is astonishing. True, detailed, clear vibrant and just so easy to listen to. Plus, the impressive sound, throbbing bass, and overall power of this speaker gave me a truly room filling sound.
I also immediately fell in love with the retro amp-style design. As a mid century modern fan I appreciate the retro look that still has all the modern technological conveniences.
Since we're on the subject of sound quality, let's get right to how the other two sound also.
Kilburn II
The middle child of the Marshall family, the Kilburn II has many of the same fuatures as the Tufton, as we'll see. I did notice with this one, I needed to crank the volume level to about 6 to be able to hear it. (I'd first connected to the Tufton and it was plenty loud on 3 and when I switched seconds later without changing anything else, I couldn't hear a peep from the Kilburn II.)
Volume oddities aside the sound quality is good, though not as knock-you-over as the Tufton. (In hindsight I probably should have started small and worked my way up.) The overall sound has a strong level of bass (and both bass and treble are adjustable on the speaker) but I did notice a tich more raspiness. Probably nothing you'd notice on your own without having the Tufton next to it. The Kilburn II isn't quite as rich and full, but it is still very good.
Stockwell II
When it comes to the Stockwell II, this little speaker also sounds phenomenal; it has a surprising amount of power for its size. It sounds great with a good bass level and clear overall sound, with no raspiness, tinniness or reverberations.
My biggest issue with this speaker was the same as the Kilburn II; I had to crank up both the volume on my phone and the on the speaker to get it to play loud enough. I was using this one at about 75-80% of the phone's volume, and the dial set at 10 on the speaker most of the time. Not sure what's going on with the volume, but with this speaker. in particular, it's pretty limiting.
Curious, I grabbed my Google Pixel 3 (I'd been using it with the iPhone XS Max previously) and connected. Same issue; I needed this speaker cranked in order to hear it at a decent level.
Looks, styling, & size
Each of these speakers is largely the same design; black case, protected corner tabs to for durability, they're all somewhat water resistant (we'll get to that in a sec) and they all have the same leather guitar-style carrying strap. They also have all the same buttons and knobs on top:
There's three dials on top; volume, bass, and treble. There’s also a small Bluetooth button, and a battery level indicator.
The Tufton weighs about 10 pounds and stands nearly 14 inches high. It's big, heavy, and you'll probably find it most at home on the floor.
Kilburn II medium
Kilburn II is what I'd call a medium sized speaker. Weighing in at about 5 pounds it's 10" at its widest.
The Stockwell II is the smallest of the Marshall speakers I tried out.
Unlike the Kilburn or the Tufton, this speaker uses a USB- C charging cable to power up. The others use a dedicated AC cord.
It's about 3 pounds, and much smaller, at 7" at it's widest point.
Battery life
Somewhat surprisingly, each of the speakers have pretty much the same battery life. Marshall says the speakers will give you around 20 hours of portable play time.
Water resistance
The Tufton and the Kilburn II are both IPX2 water resistant. That means it's ok against drops of water, but you wouldn't want to get it actually wet.
The Stockwell II meanwhile is IPX4 water resistant. That means it can handle more splashing, but still, you want to keep it out of direct water.

it sounds so funny to me, Kilburn, Stockwell, Acton, Stanmore and Uxbridge are areas of the city I live in, London. I actually live between Kilburn and Stanmore (both on the Jubilee tube line!)

Well,, if you know the history of Marshall speakers, you’ll understand the naming of each model. I’m waiting for a “Wembley” speaker myself but unfortunately, it is not possible to send Jim or Tim ( co founders of Marshall guitar amps and speakers…) nowadays. Since 1962 they have or did produce world class outstanding guitar speaker set ups in England. Now there’s a model needs to be produced if the Euros produce another 1966 title, but on a European ( how ironic is that, seeing as we are out sider more than ever at every…) level. Funnily enough, the speakers are now made abroad and the company is based in Northern Europe. Still, wherever the money is, one must go I guess. Back to the speakers themselves, I own a series one “Stanmore” and am more than delighted with the sound. I recently picked up an “Acton mark ii” and although it pales by comparison in volume, it is a neat kitchen replacement for my Stanmore which is still kicking and some! If Ikea can use names of places in Sweden, Marshall can certainly, too! Now back to “Dark side of the Moon” on my Stanmore.

I'm personaly glad that this speakers don't have Voycecontrole, it fits the old fashioned Design great and at the end of the day I want to listen to the speaker and don't want the speaker to listen to me.

The marshall stockwell 2 and kilburn 2 and tufton employs class D amps which are non linear so it doesn't get louder in a straight line that's why it sounds soft at level 5 but it starts having the oomph at level 7 and 8.

Bought the Marshall Tufton recently. You can play many songs at 50% volume and it's very loud. Though other songs require more like 80% volume, just depends on the recorded source. This is very loud mind you, though not crazy loud. I think the Tufton is so great. If you want ear-splitting sound get cheaper speakers as it will damage them over time.

A late comment, but as an FYI and something I believe you may have missed during your testing: All three models (and the new, 4th model Emberton) use Marshall's True Stereophonic solution, which is based on so-called Blumlein Stereo, i.e. sounds are split up based on their directional properties, and played either from the front, back or both, to create rich sound from practically any angle - perfect when listening outdoors for instance. This is also why, in addition to the bass vent, there is also a full-range driver on the back (on Stockwell and Emberton there is a full-range driver plus a passive radiator on both front and back). Also, regarding volume dropping when going from one speaker to the next in your test, some phones will lower their volume when switching Bluetooth devices, which is likely what happened there. But either way you're right - you should always test speakers from Small to Large ;) All three (4 if counting the new Emberton) speakers support two simultaneous Bluetooth connections (multi-host), but only one device at a time can play. To use the AUX-input, simply pause all Bluetooth playback (no need to disconnect though).

1. When two devices are paired, Stop playback on first, then Start on second. That should work. Obviously you cannot play both simultaneously. 2. Echo Input or Echo speakers all have aux out which can be connected to Aux in on Marshalls via a 3.5mm cable, or you may even pair Echo device via bluetooth but that would mean switching connection when you wish to play via Phone or Tablet.

I am the current owner of two Marshall bluetooth speakers (original Stockwell and Stanmore). I’ve found that just cranking up the volume up all the way on my device and controlling the volume on the speaker gives the best overall experience for me and the least amount of white noise from higher volumes.

i like the killburn by quality, loudness and the adjustable sound and that it keeps bass to higher volumes. but i dont like the upper bass of the marshall killburn 2. A deeper bass focus would be better. and the marhsall sotckwell 2 of course is not that loud haha - just look at its size and power in watts.....the bigger the speaker, the bigger the drivers and the amplifier power mostly results in more loudness..so of course it has no chance loudnesswise. but, i think the stockwell 2 probably sounds best regarding mids and highs and the wide stereo sound. but for outdoor use and smaller parties, of course the other two are better suited

Keep it pluged in i would say. The charger should "know" that the battery is full so it will not charge it, but if you keep unplugin it you will "consume" the charge cycles of the battery. Same like with a laptop for example. But i'm no expert.

I have tried also to power the Stockwell II thinking that may be on battery the volume would be lower, no improvement and I have also tried to connect the source to the AVIN input with a 3.5 mm jack. Same issue from 1 to 7, you have to put your ear close to the speaker to hear something

Hi Erin, As always, an informative, honest review. (Enjoyed the snippet of Florence + the Machine at 5:22, and got a laugh out of your playlist at 2:52: "S.O.B" and "Clothes Off"!? )

Killburn ist louder and has slightly more bass, bose sl mini 2 is more handly and a bit cheaper. But i‘d rather go for the killburn 2
