Me too honestly I’m tempted but the difference isn’t worth the money I just got mine put in and I was pissed when they snuck this out I will definitely probably get the new one but I’m in no rush the ecobee 4 is still to notch
Lol...I just replaced my upstairs unit and my teen broke my thermostat. Funny how a new system, subconsciously makes us want a new thermostat. 🙏 it's as amazing as it sounds.
I'm curious to know how this thermostat will heat/cool the room you're in (as you stated with smart sensor)? It seems impossible without a truly zoned HVAC system.
I just installed the Premium yesterday and I like it better than the previous version. The UI is much better and easier to read at a distance. The only thing thus far that I am not happy with is the filter reminder. Ecobee went to a monthly interval vs. the hours of use interval. I much prefer the hours of use reminder. Also it would have been great if they made the Premium and Enhanced units compatible with the Smart Thermostat back plate.
I wouldnt do the additional sensors. I find it hard to believe to even the temp around the home w/o actually zoning with dampers or in some cases major updates to the ductwork.
That's what i was confused about. If one sensor registers a room too warm and another OK then trying to even the temps without mechanical dampers/zoning simply means the unit will run longer (or adjust the temp) to cool the warmer area thereby making the already cool area colder.
I agree, I’m about to have zoning done on my HVAC system and went with enhanced ecobee. The speaker functionality is cool but I have my watch, phone, iMac and everything else to control the thermostats wherever I am in the house
Even if you aren’t interested in evening out the temperature through the house, you could still have one in your bedroom where the thermostat focuses on comfortable sleeping temperatures, and then have it switch to the rest of the house in the morning just before you get up.
This looks to be a significant improvement over previous versions, I have a Carrier heat pump and the proprietary thermostats I’ve been using are clumsy and aren’t flexible. Apparently Carrier has finally recognized this and has recently partnered with Ecobee. The Ecobee Premium is just what I’ve been hoping for
I love Ecobee and have used a couple of these devices for years however when I got my new Lennox heat pump the ecobee device was not compatible. I wish they would wise up and do the same thing the carrier has done because the Linux proprietary thermostat is very expensive and not that great.
Last yrI bought the Carrier INFINITY 19VS and was given the option to have the SYSTXCCITC01-B Infinity System Controller or the ecobee, I made the mistake of choosing the infinity system controller. It sucks! Disconnects from Wi-Fi, and contrary to claims-it does NOT work with Alexa. My ecobee will be delivered Friday.
Great video! Though one bit of info that is thrown around is that with the smart sensor it will change that room temperature. That’s only true if you have smart air vents otherwise all it can do is try to compensate trying to for the different temperature around the house.

Quick question; can I connect to both Apple HomeKit and Amazon Alexa? My wife uses Siri, I use Alexa.. so it would be cool if we could both use the one we’re each comfortable with. If that makes sense. Thanks.
Depends which older model. If you have the 3 without voice control, I'd upgrade. Otherwise, I dont think enough of an upgrade from the last-gen Smart Thermostat with Voice Control.
I would like to mount the thermostat flush with the wall instead of sticking out. Where the sensors? On the side.. asking since if I mount it flush with the wall where the bracket is half inch inside the wall.. would it block any sensors ?
Hi I was wondering if you know if the premium will work for my set up. I have a three wire setup . I have an oil burner for my baseboard heat and a few years back we added central air. Do you know if this thermostat will work for this setup? Ty
Couple quick questions re: the new Premium. In order to use Siri, do I need to have a HomePod? Or does an Apple TV suffice? Also, can it run Siri and Alexa or just one at a time?
Is there a major difference between these and the previous one with voice control? I can use it with Alexa or Siri and can make outgoing calls with it as well as use it for streaming music. Is there any real difference or is this Ecobee simply doing away with their previous model so that they can create a three tiered system so that anyone who bought the previous one in essence has the Premium pretty much 'grandfathered' in?
I agree. This thing is garbage, and I'm ready to beat it off the wall. They keep going overboard with technology that doesn't work right have the time.
Looks a good thermostat but it doesn’t support OpenTherm (for those that don’t know OpenTherm is the smart and modern way of controlling your heating, it basically turns the gas down and up to regulate the output where this Ecobee thermostat can only use the old way of gas on or gas off, this is similar to operating a lamp with a dimmer or basic switch with on or off. For the price they should offer OpenTherm like the Nest thermostat.
This is nice, but I prefer the simpler Homematic IP thermostat that I can use to replace my normal floor heating thermostat directly. No batteries required, no power hungry screen...and easy Setup with the app.
It doesn't reeeewaaallly heat/cool a room. It will run the hvac to cool or heat until that sensor meets the desired temp. However, other rooms may now be uncomfortable.
They need power. The battery is either backup -- which I dont think is true -- or maybe it is for the sensors that are included? those are battery powered.
Do you know if the screw location on the new mounting plate is different than the 3 lite? I've had mine for about 6 years and really considering upgrading
FYI I have not long had the Ecobee V5 (with voice) and it also has Siri built in and can be used as an airplay speaker, but I'm not sure why you'd want this as a speaker....
It’s good for intercom, but not much else. Anecdotally: I set up an automation, using the ecobee door sensors to have ‘Siri’ ‘say’ “Close the back door” (had to make an audio file, upload to iTunes Match/Apple Music), the problem is this is not a HomePod, so the ‘Hub’ device has to airplay the ‘song’ to the thermostat. The device designated as ‘Hub’ changes with the wind. After testing the automation, my Family Room TV was routing all audio through the thermostat, since the automation effectively set the t-stat as the airplay destination. I didn’t want to use the kitchen HomePod to play the file since it would surely interrupt anything actual music that could be playing. Point is: in MY SCENARIO, it’s not “effectively another HomePod” as stated in the video. It’s an airplay client with a microphone, which limits its functionality when we try to get tricky with our home automations.
Good video. Is there a way to get the Smart Sensor to use WIFI instead of BLUETOOTH or direct connect to Smart Thermostat? I have a two story house and the Smart Sensor regardless of where I put it will not reach the smart thermostat. I've even tried mounting it to ceiling underneath where the HVAC/ST unit reside with no luck. This is a huge issue as to where depending on the day OR night I continuously have to get on the app or use Alexa to change temps - both are super annoying and time consuming. Speaking of - I'm about to adjust it now lol.
That's frustrating. I believe they use a radio frequency connection for the sensors but can be blocked by obstacles in your house. There is no way to use Wi-Fi, partially because they dont have it built in, and partially because Wi-Fi takes up too much power and wouldn't work for small battery-powered sensor.
Hhmmmm. I have the Ecobee3. They've yet to introduce any features to make me upgrade. I don't think either of these are gonna do it for me either. They do look very nice in terms of design. And I'm still using the previous version of the sensors.
I think it’s important to note if you have the ecobee 4 with voice control there is no reason to upgrade other than aesthetics I just got the ecobee 4 and it is still a powerhouse I wanted to jump as soon as I saw this new one come out but when I looked at the specs it just isn’t worth it
You get new design, larger screen, easier to control UI, air quality monitor, improved motion detection with radar, dual band Wi-Fi, and a rumored Thread radio for future use. It’s up to users if those are worth it. For most, I doubt it.
@@AppleInsider the ecobee 4 has dual band Wi-Fi and for something you want to control most of the time away from home or in another room the larger screen doesn’t mean much aside from looks and more sensitive motion detection is also a moot point as long as it responds when you stand in front of it hardware vs hardware the new one does not blow the 4 out of the water if I didn’t have the 4 I would definitely get it but to already have the 4 is not a quantum leap
@@burghchamp You're entirely right on the Wi-Fi! I think reading too much coverage threw me. People kept touting that as a new feature but I didnt think it was. I also don't mind the screen but I know a LOT of people who've had issues using the old screen. Overall, I do agree that it isn't a big enough leap to encourage upgrading but they're pretty nice changes.
I had heard that the eocbee premium is thread border router? Is that true? I was just chatting with ecobee support, & not only did they not say it used thread, the person didn't even know what THREAD was!!! Is it a thread Boarder Router?
If you're within the return window, yes. Becuase it is the same price and you get the new features. Otherwise, probably not. Most of it is the same. The best features are the metal body, bigger display, radar sensor, and air quality.
I would say yes solely on the radar upgrade. This small upgrade will be a big change in your occupancy sensor as it will still detect you if you are not moving at all. Now if your thermostat is not in the open then it might not be worth it.
Why don't we rather talk about real live usage: 1) the remote sensors are a good idea that does not work: obviously the temperature does not adjust fast enough when you move from one room to another so you end up being uncomfortable when rooms have temperatures away from the average. 2) Don't even try with Alexa. Alexa sucks to badly! The Ecobee starts playing music when you talk with your Eco dot nearby. Those are only two critical issues for me: I end up dummying down the thermostat to make it work comfortably, so I probably overpaid for features that one would not really need or work poorly
Sorry didn’t mean to make it sound offensive. I know lots of other thermostats have a bigger footprint and can leave holes and wall repair and the plate covers them up. Thank you so much for the reply!
@@renstimpy101 I just didnt want to patch the hole from my old thermostat. It was very wide and I dont have the original paint. So I'd end up filling a hole and having a mismatched paint swatch on the wall. This was easier and I guess the lesser of two evils.
You should had just title it Review: Ecobee smart thermostat. Cause that’s pretty much all you talked about. Just a glance at the enhanced without showing the ui. Very one sided.
This saves money, heats the room you're in VERSUS the whole home, as well as can adjust the temperature when you're away. Don't need any of those things, but they sure are nice... who doesnt like saving money?
@@AppleInsider I did some readings and watched few video's before i decided to reply to you. Follow me feature is part of eco+ and it takes a good 30 minutes before it changes the room it's following the sensor in. Plus one need to buy sensors which honestly they are not that cheap. Also it's not like it really changes how much it needs to cool, in fact it might cost more if one goes to a room that tends to be hotter in the summer. I use my ac when i am home and i turn it off when I leave. I don't see any saving from getting this thermostat.
I hate this garbage, and I'm about to beat it off my wall with a bat. It is typical smart crap that does not work right. It won't stay where I set it. If I set it for 70 degrees, I want it to stay there, regardless of whether I am at home, away, sleeping, or if it is 11:30pm. These are unwanted settings that I can't turn off and can't seem to control! The instructions that came with it suck. This thermostat came with my new mobile home, and I have hated it from day one.
i had this system for 3 days ,garbage,customer support was horrible,sensor where way off ,the thermostat premium is gabage,thermostat sensor didnt work,dont waste your money
