Skrall, you should get some 3m lapping film for the final edge. I go down to 0.3 micron (about 30,000 grit) and have perfect edges, even under 60x magnification. Forget about merely cutting newspaper when you can literally shave the print off.

It's really the stones that cost the money, you can buy a kit almost identical to this for Kitchen knives for like £20, but of course that does not come with stones of anywhere near the same quality.

I don't have anything against this sharpening system but you really shouldn't discourage people from learning hand sharpening by saying stuff like it's easy to mess up. Hand sharpening is really fun plus you learn an actual skill. Keep up the good work

The thing is, it is hard. This from a guy in the (sporadic) process of mastering hand sharpening myself. It takes time and patience and more than one cheap $10-$20 knife you aren't afraid to mess up in the process as you learn. It is easy to mess up. At my current skill, I almost always mess up the edge before I fix it. So, why should he be dishonest?

Nice vid! thanx. Some tips i picked up, if you don't mind me saying; 1: fix your edge-pro to the bench! it saves energy and frustration 2: buy a stop collar to compensate for difference in stone thickness 3: please protect your blades with some masking tape.. The scratches are a waste on a nice blade like that 4: buy the 2300 grit diamond stone... it makes a mirror edge!! 5: make a stropping stone yourself with a piece of aluminium and some leather. It makes all the difference! Happy sharpening!

I recently picked up the Worksharp Ken Onion model and I love it! I sharpened EVERY knife if the house! I'd been hand sharpening my knives with a simple whet stone for decades and still had some small inconsistencies in my blade edge. Not so with Worksharp, it gives shaving sharp edges every time. However, I too have a few blades that would benefit from the flat grind capabilities of the edge pro AND you don't need electricity so it's 'bug out bag' ready to go!

Drea Jeffries would the length be able to go more if the width was thinner? Say 1 inch wide, and then could it go up to like 27 inches long. It would be a thrusting blade, so how much of an issue would the length be?

Tbh it's not black and white, it really depends on the type of stainless. for example if you had say s30v it would make for a fairly brittle sword depending on the heat treat but with a steel like 12c27 it would be much tougher. But still on the whole carbon/spring steel has the best attributes for swords

FOR ANYONE LOOKING, I recommend going with a Ruixin rx-008 sharpener system for $50. It has a clamp to hold the knife so you don't have to with your other hand, and the stones are decent enough. I would recommend it highly over the edge pro and it fits the higher quality edge pro stones or any other stones designed for it.

Ahhh, that could do it lol. Reminds me of the Ontario marine raider. A few throws left it bent around 20 degrees and I didn't even miss. I've been wanting to buy one of those Mexican bowies to make a mean fast back cutter. Although it didn't hold up to the testing I probably still will because it'll be a strictly combat knife. I have a kmg 2x72 knife makers belt grinder so I'll be able to fully sharpen both the edge and the whole clip

So I checked out this sharpening system through your link but $255 is too expensive to buy on impulse. The next day I'm browsing Wish and I see a more or less identical system for ~$25. It came in today. Knobs are less ergonomic and the clip isn't as robust, but it works really well.

Ay another Skallagrim video. Just a quick question, have you thought about making videos on other types of weapons (e.g. guns)? Don’t get me wrong, your videos on melee weapons are great. But, you’ve in a lot of videos that you have an interest in guns, so I dunno I guess you could do a Top 10 guns video :D maybe you could even judge the accuracy/realism of guns in some animes or movies. It’d be cool to see you talking about other types of weapons and maybe weapons from different regions/eras (e.g. I’d like to see your opinion of the kanabo)

I've started using the slidey thing as a clamp on mine. so instead of resting the blade on the edge of the slide bit i loosen it and slip the spine of the blade underneath and tighten it down. much easier than holding the blade in place.

Hi Skal :) Hope you are doing well. Your videos are a still a fun watch and it makes me happy every time I see that you've uploaded. Please keep it up. I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you though. Hand sharpening is in my opinion better than these expensive systems. I've only been regularly sharpening and honing some small blades for about a year now (I'm in the UK and a student hence small blades) and even 7 months ago I was getting my knives to shaving sharp quickly and without much effort. I even got a knife back to shaving sharp with the bottom of a tea mug. Plus a small fine stone is more than you need and is portable. When you demonstrate that the knife is indeed shaving sharp you can see your skin being moved by the force you are pushing down with. That may be that you just have really soft skin but personally I think my results are better with freehand sharpening. Anyway please don't think I'm having a go I'm just putting my opinion and experience out there. Again I love your videos and hope that you still enjoy making them. Have a good one! :)

I get the impression your measuring tool was measuring total angle and the edge pro's settings are per side so the value you set should be 1/2 the reading from the measure. I could be wrong, but looks that way and thought that might be helpful if you hadn't seen the possibility.

I have been using the same model for a few years. I found out that some slight mods make it much better. 1. Get a large glass flat baking tray and mount the device in there, this way the water and muck does not get everywhere and your suction cups hang on much better. 2. Buy a drill-collar with a grub screw and mount it on the vertical shaft under your bed. Then when you get your angle adjusted you can bottom the stone on it and secure it in place. Now when you change stones you loosen the top screw and position the new stone on the collar, and readjust your bed and tighten it back down. This gives you a datum point that is relative to the thickness of the stone and doesn’t mean that you have to re-adjust the angle each time you go to a new grit (Thicker or thinner stones). Takes all the guess work out. There is a great demo here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HoHW3TUdz5s.html

I don't think it would suit him too well. I say this as some one who is a fan of the WE, I've been using mine for many years now, and have it upgraded just about as far as the Gen 1 base can go. That being said, for the most part Skallagrim is into larger blades, and the WE is not the best, typically a 12 inch blade is pushing it, even with the extended arms, anything more than that and you have to segment the edge... and really anything of that size does not need such a meticulously clean edge. For the price, if you are looking at the absolute top tier sharpening set ups, for larger blades, something like the Tormek T8 is worth considering.

I guess I'm old school. I don't find keeping the angle by hand is hard, just takes practice and the marker trick you showed is how I taught myself. You don't have to adjust any knobs or anything if you do decide to change the angle either. I just use the cheap diamond stone from Walmart and the edge it leaves on my cheap CRKT Minimalist (my EDC) cuts through cardboard boxes at work better than a fresh box cutter and last slightly longer. I always freshen it up every week whether it needs it or not, or if I hit a staple or something I'd fix it later that night.

I know this system and it's a good device indeed, however still the best way is to learn to sharpen by hand, because that removes all limitations and issues with blade size or shape, and makes sharpening axes a non issue as well, or all the longer blades. I would agree convex is harder to achieve by hand, but not impossible either if you use a sponge like base for sand paper on top.

So I have found that 3M 3350 tape is awesome for knife prep. Actually, bought some for an A/C job and it's worthless for that because it is not foil tape(though it does look like it it is metalized mylar), but for knife prep it is amazing just because of it's excellent waterproof adhesion, toughness, and it is super thin to boot. Oh and it's also easily applied to the blade, and it pays to take it past the blade all the way to the handle for protection of the handle...again, this is not aluminum foil tape it is like metalized mylar and so super thin and easily formed it rocks! win win give it a shot

This looks really good and effective. But i have to say i still prefere handsharpening. You just have to learn it once so i think it is worth the effort. It took me litterally years to get it right i started as a kid age 9 or so. My Uncle showed me how it was done and than it took me dozens of ruiend knives and maybe 4 years until i could at least get a knive remotely to "cut" paper. It was such a painfull proces... Now 15 years later i am very very confident of getting any blade as sharp as i want. I dont even need all the fancy whetstones i bougt ... If an edge is not damaged just moderatliy dull i use a natural stone(belgium couticle) and a leather strop with some diamond paste. Tere is not a single opinel in my posetion i couldnt very comfortably shave my face with.... Sorry for rambeling so long. If you shy away from practicing sharpening an rely on those system for years upon years you face some pretty big disadvantages in the long run. First of all a liftime supply of old fashioned (but top notch performing)handsharpening utensils can be had for well under 100 Dollars. You dont rely on a big apparatus you have at home but nowere else... Chances are if you have acces to any sutable abbrasive material you can sharpen any knife anytime anywhere. And you dont rely on the shape of the knife beeing compatible whiht the mountig mechanism on your aparatus...

Also, I think this one is better for "shave sharp" edges. So it is not required for swords. Notice that the belt sanders drag the dust along the belt, so the 80-90% of the dust goes on the surface

since i use my fallkniven dc4 and cc4, i really have a hard time to acknowledge the usefulness of most sharpening systems. in the time you setup most of them, i'm done getting the blade back to shape, in the time you got started sharpening, i'm done polishing. i just use a kitchen carbide sharpener for super damaged blades and that's it. 5-10eur for a cheap kitchen sharpener, 20-25eur for each stone, and that's it. i take those two stones anywhere, go 8 time each side of the blade on each side of each stone, then go a few time on the leather sheath of the stones, and that's it, i can shave with it... the only downsides are that you may not be as precise, and need to hone your skills before honing anything else.

can't you do convex edges by constantly adjusting the angle ? of course you wouldn't be able to do a smooth convex edge, but if more "squared" convex edge is not a huge problem I see this tool doing it.
@ZombieWilfred
@ZombieWilfred 7 лет назад
Pretty sure he said that the previous system he was trying, the worksharp (some kind of belt grinder/sharpener) could only do convex edges but not flat grinds (probably because its belt flexes) he wasn't referring to this system...
@ZombieWilfred
@ZombieWilfred 7 лет назад
Also, to answer the question, yes you could. It wouldn't have to be very square, either, if you started at the shallow angle and slowly and consistently adjusted it steeper as you went you could probably do a pretty nice convex edge, actually.

"Some people like to soak the stones for a little while, but it doesn't seem to be necessary." Reminds me of my old music teacher regarding a cleaning agent and the recorders. "Once it's wet . . . *ITS WET*"

how long does it take to sharpen one average kitchen knife on such system? Sorry, I could not watch the entire 18 minutes, you may have mentioned it, so I would not know.

I hope in the 3 years since this was made they've added a better hand guard. One slip on the up-stroke could be very painful.

Do you think a jeweled pommel is too impractical for a decoration?

Hi, Skallagrim! Is It really Works? About the Stones, 1500 is enough or do you recommend 3000? Congrats for the video.

Roll that paper for your test cut, which is clearly tougher, takes more force, but is it tearing the paper fibers or clean cutting them? This is the test...A dull knife can shred paper if the paper is held and meet to the edge, but even a semi sharp one can fail the roll test.

Hey Skall! I do not know if you said it in the video, you probably have, but I just can't find the moment. But anyways, is this able to be used for blades or other weapons? Loved the video by the way!

Nice vid, but you need to install the system on a glossier surface. The suction cups are sliding all over.

ye sharpening freehand is more time consuming - at start, its actually pretty fast once you get it - but its also a lot more relaxing for me

Is there a particular reason to maintain the sharpness of an edge, be it a sword or axe, that you can shave with it? I haven't seen all your videos so I apologize if you have already talked about it, but I don't see the need to put in that little extra time for a sword, of course I do with my kitchen knives.

Looks like the angle setting is per side, so with 24deg you get 54 edge.

While meant as a pun this is actually true - skall elaborates well on the intricacies of turning a dull edge into a sharp one in a way that is both entertaining and easy to understand.

I hope you do realize that the further you go off center, the smaller angle becomes. So you might run into consistency issues...

so, why use this tool in favour of the dual-side sharpener which you pull knives through? Do they wear the blade more or something?

Butcher here who is terrible at keeping knives sharp. Anyone know if this thing is good for 7-14 inch slicing knives? I need an easy-to-use device, and all the cheap stuff eventually ruins the knife. This thing might be a bit excessive for what i need.

I think i'll stick to my full sizes wetstones to be honest. This is way to fidgety for me. And if the angle still varies due to the thickness or shape, then what's the point really? Every knife is different
