This is my personal opinion on a recently purchased reproduction of a late 15th century bastard sword made by Arms & Armor, a manufacturer based in Minneapolis, MN, USA.
** Specifications **
Overall length: 110 cm (43 1/2 in)
Blade length: 85 cm (33 1/2 in)
Weight: 1.2 kg (2.7 lbs)
Center of gravity: 14.5 cm (5.7 in) from the guard
Blade material: 6150 high carbon steel, tempered to a hardness of about 50 HRC
Blade thickness: 4.4 mm near the guard, tapering to 3 mm at the tip
Hilt assembly: Peened
Price: 860 USD
** Pros / Cons **
+ Well made, sturdy hilt and blade
+ Good balance and handling overall, light weight
+ Beautiful guard, grip and pommel design
- Noticeable gap in the guard (considering the price range)
- The edge should be sharper
** Where to find it **

I have to say that the hilt gap worries me too, it gives the whole thing a lot of space to move which could lead it to loosening up over time. If I wanted to do a stopgap fix, a bit of solder into the gap on each side would make a good filler of the gap, I would just have to be careful that it went into the gap and didn't bead on the blade or anything.

Ok, in all honesty, if that sword didn't have any of the intricacies that it does, like the patterns etched into the cross and the inlays under the leather, this sword would look like a Windlass model sword. Hell, it even has very similar stats as my 15c. longsword. Hand and a half grip length, 4.6 to 3.1mm distal taper, awkward pear shaped pommel, same POB. Only mine costed less than $200 USD, and it has side rings. For almost $900 USD, I would want to trade it, too.

I've got a $200 CS Hanwei Mercenary Sword (47 inches total) that's made clicking noises for a good 2 years now. No problems whatsoever in terms of build quality. Well, the guard feels slightly loose, and it gets a lot of handling, and while it concerned me a bit at first, it's proved itself to be annoying and nothing more.

Thanks for the mini-review Skall! It looks a bit like a type XIIIa or XVIa - to me the problem would really be that I'm just personally more attracted to more acute points. That's a personal matter of course, and probably currently...err... current just because my Albion Ringeck recently arrived. So to me the waisted grip looks just a bit "wrong" on such a broad blade... but that's REALLY just a case of taste. Though I generally like waisted grips, if for no other reason than my tiny hands ;). I hope you can trade it in for something more to your liking.. it IS a beautiful sword after all. Best regards Raoul G. Kunz

Michael Mulla E It's a (very forced) running joke. I don't blame you for not getting it though. It originated from one of Skallagrim's vids, where he discusses odd techniques (from memory, not sure if that's actually it). Regardless, one of the 'techniques' was flat out silly; to screw the pommel off your sword and throw it at an opponent. The silly memelords in the comment section decided to force the joke wherever possible, NecroBanana's comment being case in point.

Skall, this gap in the guard is a real problem. If use the sword for fighting or training. When you block the strike - guard receives most of the impact energy, so gap makes blade oscillate and deform until it breaks. Of course not all types of blocking makes blade oscillate, but usually it happens. Also then you cut with the end sword may become pendulum and all vibrations goes to guard breaking it down. I personally saw how it took place.

Hey Skall! So this is a little unrelated but I was on Kult of Athena in the Chinese sword section and I notice a significant difference in between the form of the blades. Some dao were curved like a scimitar while others were broad like a gladius ; one even had a hook. So was wondering, are there any differences in their martial arts regionally to fit the multiple styles of forging it?

The weapon picks the warrior as much as the warrior picks the weapon. Sometimes we find a piece that is beautiful, a wonderful work of craftsmanship, yet it doesn't feel right in our hands. That is an instinct borne of combat and practice. If a weapon doesn't feel comfortable in the hand, even if the reason is no fault of the weapon, you have to listen to that.

***** I just returned from GenCon in Indianapolis, where I had the privilege and pleasure to handle Albion swords for the first time. I was actually quite enamored with a longsword very much like this one. The hilt was extremely similar, yet simpler and had great hand feel. The blade also had a much sharper taper, though similar length. I have large hands, yet felt only one was needed for great handling. two was also comfortable, either hands together or apart - the thinner lower grip with flanged out pommel made for an elegant control point. The price point was $1050 USD, and I will seriously consider this piece as my first true sword in my (admittedly, very) small collection. I never knew how truly amazing a sword could feel in hand - Thank you for steering me true! I hope you would consider this style from Albion, though we each only have our respective experiences.

I bought a few weapons from this company and examined a lot of their other stock. I think the quality is not terrible but not excellent either. Certainly better than the cheapest reproductions but not as good as the most expensive custom work. I also noticed a few minor issues with the items I had but they were serviceable. I think they are a bit overpriced for the quality level but with domestic production in the U.S. it may be tough for them to get their own costs down any lower.

Skall, have you ever handled a Arms and armor 15th century two handed sword? I'm talking to A&A about a couple of adjustments to it and was wondering if you had any experience handling it. I know you've played around with the larger swords, and was wondering if you could shed any light on it. Also, in your opinion on such a piece would a distal taper, narrowing of the blade width, and lengthening of the handle an additional four inches make it to be more lively? Thnks and look forward to hearing back from you.

@Lono5885

Coming from a Fiore background, I tend to prefer these shorter hilts, despite not having small hands. German longsword tends to favor the longer grips, which makes sense - I imagine it helps power winding motions and increases range with those one handed swipes to the legs. The Italian style focuses on a lot of close plays and disarms that often require disengaging your off-hand to use it for something else. The bastard/shorter grip makes wielding the longsword with one hand during these techniques easier, and there's less hilt to get tangled up with. Or maybe it was just an arbitrary regional preference, what the hell do I know?

It looks quite short (and the description says so too :D). I'm not very fond of this style of sword either, it is balanced much like a one-hander (giving it nice cutting capabilities combined with the broad blade). My main issue however is the hilt-design, it's short and you absolutely have to grab the pommel to have any good effect when using it and it seems rather uncomfortable. Anyway I found this sword in M&B Warband in the Floris Mod Pack while I was roaming at Swadia. :) And a question for the end: Skall would you buy a sword from a custom smith who doesn't sell his swords on Kult of Athena? (I haven't really found any swords from one-man businesses there) Why or why not? I'd really appreciete an answer.

@HamsterPants522
@HamsterPants522 8 лет назад
Skall is right, the sword is probably meant to be grasped at the pommel, but I think the reason why he finds it to be uncomfortable is because he's gripping it wrong. Fishtail pommels like this one are ideally gripped with the palm of the hand on the peened tip of the pommel. It involves different technique. I recommend Skall to give that kind of grip a try before dismissing the sword.

Hendlton It does not get boring. And it's also very satisfying to just pick up and handle a good sword every now and then. Appreciating how it looks in your home is also part of it. Ask any collector of almost anything, it's the same basic idea. :)

Hendlton $900+ is a very similar price tag to many, many other hobbies. Car augmentation is even more expensive, drones are expensive, robotics in general are expensive, airsoft and paintball are expensive, good paints are expensive, etcetera.
@Hendlton
@Hendlton 8 лет назад
***** Well you get to drive cars around and you get to fly drones and you get to do useful stuff with robots and you can play with paintball and airsoft a hundred times but you can't really do much with a sword.
@KeeganWantz
@KeeganWantz 8 лет назад
Hendlton I'm afraid I must disagree. For example, if someone is a collector, then their collection is never used... but it's still a hobby, and can be vastly more expensive than purchasing a new AEG every year. Collecting swords is similar, with one particular exception: you can still use them for practice if you are a practitioner of any variety of martial arts that involves them. Cutting through newspapers, cutting through bottles, and cutting through rolled tatami mats are all examples of why a sword collection is better than, say, a sealed action figure collection. You can actually do something with it.
