UPDATE!
I made a class about all the modeling clays that can be found and how to use them skl.sh/3tMB1U4
Used to polymer clay, I decided to give epoxy clay a go!
This is the clay I bought
Apoxie Clay from Aves
From the same brand, haven't tried it YET, this one comes in COLORS!!
Apoxie Sculpt from Aves
EDIT : I only use "Apoxie Sculpt" in "Natural" now. I don't like the colored epoxy clay, it's not as nice to work with.

EDIT 2021: IMPORTANT! Epoxy clay is pretty toxic. NOT good for beginners. Also wear nitrile gloves! And mix with a mask or outside. EDIT 2021: IMPORTANT! I'm SORRY! I made an editing mistake and you can't hear me around 15 minutes. What I say : - epoxy clay sticks nicely to wire, contrary to polymer clay which is a pain to add to bare wire. - for me the sweet spot for texturing was around 1h30 - 2H, so the last half hour, where the clay was hardening, but still malleable and really nice to work with. Again, sorry, such a rookie mistake... I was so stressed to get the video out today.

Hi! Nice info. Maybe you can help me...I am trying to creat kind of "mechanic looking parts" with an epoxy resin. Just like that in the video, but they are made in Brasil, where it is muuch cheaper than here in Europe. I am looking for an alternative material, and some tips on how creat parts that look "machine made".

I don't know if u know this since it's been a while since this video was published but to extend working time with mixed apoxie sculpt (& probably apoxie clay) you can pop it in the freezer to halt the cure (I've heard you can slow it like this for up to 3 days) I've found this super helpful for if I've made too much or am spending a little too much time on a piece and am afraid that my excess will become unusable before I get to move to the next part of the piece.

This is probably the best video on epoxy clay! I have used it to make silly things in the past... nothing to the level that you have done. I guess I never read that you can let it sit for a while for better squishing it about and getting better details. I always got a basic shape and then sanded. You have provided me with more confidence. Thanks for this video!

You don't need to wait 5 minutes after mixing, simply start using it as soon as it's mixed (2 min). You can use water to make it softer and extend working time. Make sure to use very little by simply wet you hand and kneed the clay to make sure it doesn't get too stiff and dry. Also using serene wrap keeps it moist longer.

I was trying to figure out why people use polymer clay (as opposed to epoxy putties), and this video offers a very useful perspective from the other side. So many people don't even acknowledge the existence of another material - they discuss polymer clay as if nothing else existed. Meanwhile, I am usually sculpting with epoxy putties, and am completely dumbfounded by a material that requires a lot of force to knead, offers no obvious benefit and on top of all that requires baking. P.S. You should be using lubricant when working with epoxy - it helps you control the stickiness and allows to do it with bare hands without danger. Usually, Vaseline or hand creme. With some putties, water will suffice.

I have slowly but surely come back to polymer clay lately, mostly "cosclay" and for a very good reason: its flexibility, hence strength. I still use epoxy clay for other things, especially since I work a lot with trash so it's a useful glue/clay. But after having worked with various clays over the last decade, I find polymer clay super practical and just stronger. Epoxy clay can break when the pieces are thin and I've had pieces break. So it's a matter of using the right clay for the thing you want to create. Also polymer clay needs to be baked, so you have all the time in the world to sculpt very detailed and readjust your work as you go.

I’m so happy to hear your review on this because I am doing some things where I absolutely cannot put the item in the oven, but need to make some modifications like putting elf ears on dolls and other silly endeavors. 😜 I may still try to use polymer clay for these things, but I won’t get a seamless transition between the vinyl and the ear which drives a perfectionist like me absolutely nuts. Good stuff! Thank you!

It is absolutely toxic and you can get health issues if you use it daily without any protection nor good ventilation. Adding paint isn't great because the epoxy yellows so everything yellows. It's best to paint on top of it.

There are some videos showing how you could mix epoxy putty (Apoxie or Milliput) together with Green Stuff (this one is flexible once cured, and it is elastic while working on it, perhaps it has rubber in its composition). I still have to try myself, but probably we can get the good features of both worlds, sturdy, sandable, drillable as epoxy but perhaps it is a bit less fragile.

not anything, some plastics have low melting points www.quora.com/What-is-the-melting-point-of-plastic however, indeed and I just checked, the specific white bottle, is PETE and that has a melting point of 250°C But I also have been working on cameras and other weird objects where I don't know exactly what materials are in it. And I'm not keen on finding out which releases fumes or melt down.

Hey Stephanie!!! I just where watching another tutorial or information video about that clay. And then I saw that you also released a video on this! I though, "yes someone who knows about my struggles with polymer clay! I am sculping figures and enviroments. And I thing I will use Apoxie Sculpt for fixing plymer clay projects that are sadly broken in the oven. I mean sometimes I am working about 2 hours only to get all air out of my aluminium foil before I even start to sculpt. But sometimes the bakingods break my work, And if that happens on the last beke that is not very nice. so sometime there come cracks. And I will fix those buggers with that Apoxie Sculpt in future! Cause it´s a struggle to get cracks in sculptures which you already worked on for 3 or more days.

I'm sure you have learned a lot since this video. I don't know about this brand but some can be mixed with paint before the blending of the 2 parts to achieve beautiful colors. I am so impressed with what you achieved. I'm worried about the small containers and what you said about them being expensive. I haven't priced them yet.
@stephanie.kilgast
@stephanie.kilgast 2 года назад
The mixing with paint is a bad idea as from my experience most epoxy clays will yellow over time. So it's just safer to paint them. Also now that I have use it extensively along other clays, I don't use it all that much and don't recommend it, as it's very toxic to use (gloves are a must and a mask or working in a really well ventilated area is a good idea) it's also expensive and not that easy to use. Also it has zero flexibility so it's not strong for small details, that will break.

@@stephanie.kilgast thank you for your response. It is very helpful. I’m actually signed up to take a class and the epoxy sculpt product. I hear it might even smell worse which has me a bit worried. @@stephanie.kilgast also they mixed it with Mica pigment rather than paint. I’m sure that’s a huge difference.
@stephanie.kilgast
@stephanie.kilgast 2 года назад
@@TaraSueSalusso honestly, I'm mostly using air-dry clay and cold porcelain now, unless you want to put your sculptures outside, there's no need for epoxy clay which is overall incredible toxic as a product and to work with. Mixing it with mica paint won't make much difference. Sure some epoxies don't yellow right away but when exposed to UV they eventually will. So better to paint them.

@@stephanie.kilgast I really apreciate you taking the time to talk with me. I started with air dry clay and experience difficulties with cracking. I just threw away a sculpture because of cracks. I'm worried about the toxic aspect too but want something stronger than air dry and was thinking about using it in a way to add strength to my air dry clay. Not by mixing but by adding a layer to support the clay. I have a scholarship submitted to buy all these products that I will want to amend it I really need to go in a differant direction. I work with resin a lot and understand the aspect of fumes. I use a resin product that has very low toxisity. Is cold porcelain air dry? Maybe I add that to my order instead. I also have classes lined up for working with the epoxy clay. Yikes. I feel so stressed that I have made a huge mistake.

Love this type of video! It really sounds like this is an ideal clay for you. It looked like you were sculpting without gloves near the end of the video? I was going to also suggest finger cots. I’m not sure if that’s what they’re called in other countries, but they’re basically just the fingers of the gloves. I much prefer them as opposed to having my entire hand in a glove. But then, I do also wear gloves a large part of my day at work, so I don’t like having to wear gloves at home too. I have used epoxy clay, but I didn’t use it like I use polymer clay. I used it to adhere several pieces to each other that couldn’t be held together with regular glue, much as you used it to “glue” the two pieces of your plastic box together. So, I’m afraid I can’t really other any tips or tricks.
@stephanie.kilgast
@stephanie.kilgast 5 лет назад
that's what I was planning to do (still plan to do) if I don't master epoxy clay to my liking, to use PC and then just use EC to bond stuff together. And yes, sculpted without gloves. They say to wear gloves while mixing, but nothing about wearing them all way through, so I just went with that. I can't seem to properly sculpt with gloves, it makes everything more difficult for me to do, so it gets frustrating very fast.
@theoldcronestwistedorphana4092
I use the Apoxie Sculpt and buy nitrile gloves in small so they are skin tight. The tighter the gloves, the easier time you will have. The clay likes to almost grab the gloves and tug them off of your finger tips. Make sure you really clean your tools well. I have lost a couple to not cleaning right after I was finished. This is by FAR my favorite clay to work with. It really does cure rock hard. My only draw back is the weight of it. It's a very heavy clay and sometimes it gets too heavy for delicate sculptures. They also have the Apoxie Paste now, which is almost a liquid consistency, it's great for putting down in very thin layers and adding texture with things like sand, paper towels, or sponges. The possibilities are endless!
@CnithTheOnliestOne
@CnithTheOnliestOne 5 лет назад
@@theoldcronestwistedorphana4092 couldn't you use it over foil like normal clay? That way it wouldn't be so heavy?
@theoldcronestwistedorphana4092
You can use it over foil to cut some of the weight. That helps a lot. And doing very delicate sculpts it isn't too bad, but if you were to try to do a LOT of tiny things over a large area, the weight difference will be noticeable. But truly, extra weight is worth it for the durability of this clay. The Apoxie Sculpt is stronger than the Apoxie Clay, and while it WILL still break, you have to work hard to break it. I have knocked a doll off of a table onto a concrete floor at a show and my sculpted areas didn't even chip. I highly recommend it.

I have the following query. I want to secure cured polymer clay into a bezel of sterling silver. Can I use the Apoxie Clay, and if so, should I thin it with a bit of water? Or instead, should I use a strong glue to adher the polymer clay? As well, isn't Apoxie Clay toxic so as to wear both gloves and a mask? Thank you in advance for time and help.
@stephanie.kilgast
@stephanie.kilgast 2 года назад
yes, epoxy clay is toxic and you should wear at the very least nitrile gloves. In your case, I feel like glue should be good enough. But you can use epoxy clay for that as well. I just don't think it's necessary. Use a strong, flexible glue. This is going to be the best option. When I used to make jewellery I would use the red scotch glue, but I've never seen it outside of France, so you'll have to find a more fitting glue.

Hi Stephanie, thank you for your response. I happened to use Epoxy glue, I had to mix equal amounts and knead them very well. During this process it got heat, It had a very bad smell but a very strong bond. As regards my query, I will use the polymer clay for professional use, and want to choose the best option of bond specially having to secure the polymer clay in the bezel. Having said that, I'm not sure which of the two, ie Apoxie Clay or any strong glue would be best to use. Thanks a lot.

@@user-el7of3cz9g wearing a mask, or being in well ventilated area is quite important. I don't use the clay often (I keep it for very specific things) but my nose often starts to itch very fast when using the clay. I'm used to wearing nitrile gloves now, so I don't mind, but wearing a mask I find very difficult. I have a love/hate relationship with that clay to be honest.

really hard to hear you over the music at 15 minutes when you start talking about how the clay is behaving at the one hour mark

so sorry about that! can't change it now and re-uploading seems like a bad idea in terms of views, YT being the mess it is nowadays. I'm simply saying that it sticks nicely to wire, contrary to polymer clay which is a pain to add to bare wire.

You could just add a copper rod or any other metal rod and put apoxy clay over it and it'll be fine :3
@avielthealienfromplanetmex5679
Try mixing it with another material called Procreate. That will have far more potential than the aves alone.

This is very interesting but is spoiled at the 15 minute point when the music starts playing when you are talking. Can you re edit this video and remove the music that's in the wrong places so we can hear what you are saying?

@stephanie.kilgast

It’s also toxic in the long run! So gloves are well advised. But I can’t model with gloves on. It’s strong because it’s a resin. When it’s cured it’s basically just a plastic.

I'm going to do a video about the different modeling clay soon, but yes, you should always wear gloves with epoxy, highly toxic. I don't recommend this clay for any newbies tbh, but for pros it's quite good.

You either talk or turn up the music, which by the way not everyone likes! If you use music, try to use instrumental! I don't know if I will watch another episode. My time is precious!

Makes me sad to see people not supporting their local art/craft/hobby shops, but using amazon instead.
@stephanie.kilgast
@stephanie.kilgast 5 лет назад
well. It really depends where you live and what your craft store offers. When I travel, I often buy art supplies in art stores, but here in Vannes, the one we have has a poor assortment, none of the brands I use in paintings, paper or clay. Personally I tend to use art supply online store though, because they have a better range than amazon ever will. As for the apoxie clay, I used some money earned as an amazon partner, so had to go through amazon, it's not great, but for someone who is struggling a bit earning a stable income, it is great. So, people following my links and buying on amazon are helping me as an artist, and that is not sad.

Most of the stuff I use just cant be found in the local stores because there just isn't enough demand for it. That means that I have no choice but to shop online for what I need. I Recommend the product I use to the customer service people at the stores all the time but none of them ever appear on the shelves no matter how often I request or recommend them.
