Thanks for the review. I’m actually 2/3 of the way through my first listen and I think the album is great so far. I think it pretty much captures the entirety of King’s X career in terms of the sound. it really does sound like they put their heart and soul into this.

Good review overall - only thing to mention is "Take the Time" is a slow/ballad type song by Ty - no aggressive or uptempo, no riffing on this one.

Not surprised that it is a grower. I have been a KX fan since '88 and have found their post 1990s albums hit and miss. Of the three tracks I have heard, "All God's Children" really hooked me the first time I heard it. The other two, as you said, have grown on me. I am looking forward to the release. Thanks for the review, and welcome to the KX fan family, Pete! It's good to have you in the fold!

While I am looking forward to receiving my new King's X CD soon, I still feel that the band overall discography wise have not quite lived up to that magnificent run of their first 5 albums. "Dogman" from 1994 is my pick for favorite King's X album. I hope the new album really grabs my ears in a good way.
@4themusicman
@4themusicman 2 года назад
I could not agree more with most of your comment. I came into King's X with Faith Hope Love and then went backwards. FHL is probably my favorite of the catalog with Gretchen and Dogman very close behind. But since Dogman, I've been bored. My biggest issue with bands is they forget about writing good music and start to kid themselves that its all about the lyrics. Like instead of rocking out, they spend all their time trying to change the world with their lyrics and then fit random music melodies to fit the lyrics. Bad idea. I really don't care what they're saying if the music sucks. Dream Theater has fallen into this as well. I wish my favorite bands would start focusing on the music again.

I kind of separate King's X into "the first 6" (because I love Ear Candy too!), and everything else. My ears keep begging for more massive Ty riffage, extra long solos, 3 part harmonies, funky time sigs, and dUg's soulful lead vocals all to come together into well formed songs. When we don't get it in newer albums, I feel deflated. This album has some of that sprinkled throughout but doesn't punch. I think it's good though, better than most anything you hear on the radio.

@GetzGoth
@GetzGoth 2 года назад
Bulbous was actually an impressive album. It was also the one album they ever did that I would consider to be significantly dark. Not AIC Dirt or Facelift dark but still very dark for KX. Is this just me or did anyone else pick up on this? I was living a bad life at the time so my mindset may have been a big influence on that interpretation. Anyway, Cheers!

Thanks Pete! I listened all the way through 4x already, and I'm finding riffs and melodies sticking in my head long after the headphones came off. I like it overall, but it goes more with the last 6 King's X albums. I don't think we'll ever hear anything like the first 6 albums from anyone anymore, so I'll take it! It's enjoyable! Been a fan of King's X ever sing the first notes of Out of the Silent Planet burst out of my speakers in '88 and I wrote to my college roommate "man, you HAVE to hear this band!". So consider that dUg is 72 years old, I'm thankful they're still able to give us more King's X music to fill our souls.

I gave the full album my first listen today and found I really only enjoyed a few songs. I was hoping they'd go out with a bang, but instead they went out with a wimper. They did try harder with this album, there are some excellent harmonies that they haven't done much of on the last few albums, but the song writing seems lacking. I love the first 6 albums and enjoyed all the rest thoroughly (with the possible exception of Black Like Sunday). It's like Van Halen III, nobody wanted to be the one to say "Hey, I think we could do better."

I think Kings X pinnacle was Gretchen Goes to Nebraska. Their first album was good, but you could tell they were still developing their sound. Faith Hope and Love had a few really great tracks, and was a very good album. Their Self Titled album was decent. Dog man had some killer songs. But now, Dug’s range is totally gone, and after Dogman, Ty’s guitar tone has been completely uninspired. A HUGE reason the first 4 albums were amazing, was the guitar tone. Listening to Ty play their best songs through his current rig, is really eye opening as to how much his tone WAS the music. I’m forever grateful for their music, but the “magic” they once had is long since gone. :(

Glad to see the review on the new King's X album. I first got into them in the early 90's on the strength of their (MTV) videos (and Sam Taylor's Production). Yes, they're kind of weird and they can be quirky... but the harmonies are amazing and there is so much "heart" to be found in their lyrics that they can just carry you along (and away) from this world. Galactic Cowboys (also Sam Taylor on Production for their debut album) is another band I would suggest as they also have some similarities with King's X. I would love to see a review of GC's "new" album (Long Way Back to the Moon) if you have not already done so. If you've never listed to GC, you might like them as well. Thanks again!

King's X is one of my all-time favourite bands and have been since I discovered them as a teenager back in the 80s. I have listened to every album more times than I can count, (even Moonlight and Bulbous), and pretty much all of their solo stuff and other band collaborations (Jughead, Platypus etc....). So it pains me a lot to say I am not really loving the new one so much. It's not "bad" by any means and the band is on point in every way, (Ty absolutely shreds), and the production is top-notch. But the songs aren't really grabbing me. Others are saying its a grower and I really hope that is the case with me as well.

A fair review here by Pete but the melodies will eventually get you. "Holidays" is a phenomenal melodic slow/mid tempo sung by Jerry and "Festival" is such a cleverly written up tempo rocker that features both Ty and Dug doing lead vocals. I would say in many ways some songs on this record sound most like early King's X than anything they've done in the last 25 years

@Sea of Tranquility I have been a KX fan since 1990 when they released 'Faith Hope Love' and have seen them live 13 times since then. However, I think people are being way too kind regarding 'Three Sides Of One.' IMO, this album is as confounding as 'Please Come Home Mr. Bulbous' from 2000 which is one that many a person places at the bottom of the list when ranking their discography. 'Three Sides Of One' is a tough listen and is definitely not a good introduction to the band for new potential fans. My .02cents Brent

Fair review. I have it ordered and haven’t really wanted to listen to the tunes released until I get it. I totally loved the early albums but this one sounds like it might harken to the style of their mid-period stuff, Mr. Bulbous, Manic and Black Like. Those were left turn albums for me, odd song structures and not as immediately appealing when compared to their early ones. XV was great so I was hoping for more driving, grooving stuff in this one. We’ll see….

KX fan from about 89...no question my favorite band, Upon first listen I simply didn't get it. Its definitely a bit of a departure from what I think anyone that knows them would expect. This is a bit different for them because I feel confident in saying that this is the first time they really had a "comment" on current events, in such a strong way through an entire album. It took me a bit by surprise, but I think for purists, this will in the end be considered in the top end of their catalogue. Personally, I'm not a big fan of the mastering mix. Maybe it is "dark and brooding" by design due to the nature of the songs but I think the fact that they are tuned so low already makes it "dark" enough.

I think I counted three songs on which Jerry is the lead vocalist, which for me isn't a good sign for whether the album is good or not-so-good. While he is a great harmonizing/backup vocalist whose voice blends in beautifully on the three-part harmonies of King's X's songs, his voice isn't suited for being the main vocalist on their songs.
