REVIEW | L. O. L. - Lack Of Love (Dreamcast, 2000) | Love-de-lic's DC Masterpiece

IGFTW Ep. 3 takes a look at L. O. L., or Lack Of Love, one of the rare hidden gems for the Sega Dreamcast that was only released in Japan. It was the joint production of Love-de-lic game studio and Ryuichi Sakamoto, world-famous composer and musician. I apologize for the dark video quality--it became that way when rendered, and I used "auto-fix" youtube video tools to adjust this...I hope it turns out OK.

Other games featured in this video are the Dreamcast titles Jet Grind Radio, Phantasy Star Online, and Shenmue, all published by Sega, and Shadow of the Colossus (PS2) and Journey (PS3), published by Sony. A small video clip was used from the film The Room, owned by Wiseau Films. All "background music," is audio recorded from the game itself and not from any external source, such as a CD or MP3.
Gameplay was captured using the Elgato Game Capture HD, and video/audio was edited using Sony Movie Studio Platinum Suite, Version 12.

What a very strange game, but unique, so very unique, as the Dreamcast is known for very strange and unique games, someday I will own one and play the many games this console houses! But yes L.O.L. looks very interesting, but something I'm not sure I could get into, but there is always a chance to give it a try (when the price is right), it's almost like Pikmin, but just one lonely creature trying to survive on this planet. I do love how it portrays its message, and of course that music is powerful, thank you Ryuichi Sakamoto. Great job Jimmy! Also glad to see your love for The Room this early in IGFTW ;)

I've never really seen any of your videos, but coming across this really helped me find something I felt the Dreamcast would challenge me with (Especially since I barely remember how to read Japanese). I've never owned one up until recently, and this video's helped me make a good informed decision on how I'd like to enjoy my long awaited experience with this system! Your presentation of this game and explanation is really good. I really look forward to going through your videos and finding new interesting imports to play! Cheers, man. Really enjoyed this.

+Nephicide Thank you very much for watching, and I'm glad you've found interest in this wonderfully unique and (IMO) amazing game. TBH, there's not much of a challenge here with the Japanese language, as the only text that appears is on the pause menu (IIRC), but it's a good introduction to the rare and obscure on the Dreamcast for sure. :)

Thanks a lot! I need to pick up the rest of the love-de-lic games, Moon: A Remix RPG and UFO: A Day in the Life for the PS1, as I hear that they're even better than L. O. L. Unfortunately, I never played Seventh Cross, despite being an early adopter of the Dreamcast. I think it was because of my over-reliance at the time of magazine reviews, which panned the game as far as I can remember. Thanks for reminding me of its existence, I want to pick it up now...
@GarryGri
@GarryGri 3 года назад
I've played both. This is the best, and because it has no speech and simple interactions the Japanese isn't a barrier, it's easy to pick up, work out, and play. Seventh Cross seemed to be one of those games it was 'kool' to hate on for a while. I didn't think it was a bad game at all. I've played much worse games some people gush about. Each to their own I suppose!

Since this is an old video, I don't know if you'll reply but, if you do, could you explain the ending of the game? (even a brief explanation will do) I'm really curious about how the story ends. You should do some sort of separate video or something like that for games that have a story (like this one or Wonder Trek) where you explain the ending. It would be very, very useful for people who don't speak the language and/or don't have the time or patience to play the game themselves. Thanks.
@ImportGamingFTW
@ImportGamingFTW 4 года назад
That's a good idea, I'll keep it in mind if I ever want to work on something that won't take as much time as one of my regular videos. As far as the LOL ending, it's been a while since I've played the game, but if you catch me on stream sometime, I can try to recall things there on the fly (might be too long to type out). Or you can check out a longplay, no language in the game's cutscenes so you can piece everything together easily.

@ImportGamingFTW
@ImportGamingFTW 10 лет назад
Nick Wright Yes, definitely! I don't know if it was unclear in my video, but the names of the creatures serve only as vague hints, and are completely unnecessary. The most important thing you can do to figure out solutions to the "puzzles" in the game is observing other creatures and your surroundings, visually and audibly. ;)

MegaPiGuy314 Thank you very much. Lack Of Love is a beautiful game, and I had a lot of fun making this review, though it's one I'd like to go back and redo so I can "do it justice" now that I've gotten better with editing. You can play Japanese games on a US system with a simple boot disc. You can purchase one for cheap, and in fact retailers used to sell them back when the Dreamcast was still kicking it...but the cheapest, easiest way to get a boot disc is just to burn the data onto a disc for free. I'm sure you can find one with a simple search. Hope you can play this game sometime!
