Alternate builds need to come back, Lego used to be all about the infinite possibilities, anybody could make anything, now Lego is more about really detailed models that need to stay that way, and then there's also some cool moc builders on the side, I remember early Minecraft sets had alternate builds, they were small but were so much fun, it was like a whole new set.
The whole ethos of Lego used to be about alternate builds, nowadays they just produce expensive licensed ‘ornaments’…..Hopefully this and the Lions Castle will usher back the old ways.
This set has alternate builds you can download online. They make great creator 3 in 1 sets, and back in the day the alternate builds on the box were just to get your imagination going, not actual suggestions
A lot of the classic space sets had *pictures* of alternate builds on the back of the box, but they didn't have build instructions for them. They were sort of there just to encourage you to try and figure them out.
This is the first set to feature a remastered classic red spaceman aswell. The remastered versions have a more durable and scratch resistant torso printing aswell as a reinforced chinstrap for the classic helmet to reduce the chance of breakage, along with all of the moderm durability and molding improvements of the basic minifigure design
I think this is the coolest set lego has ever released since the old space sets. I‘m gonna get this for my dad for christmas. He would always tell me how awesome his old explorer ship was, but sadly he gave all his old legos to my cousin since he never thought to have a son of his own. I hope he gets flashbacks to his childhood and will be very happy :)
I am certain that The Adventurers will be our 2023 Icons set released - they kept hinted at it during Legocon, putting the sets in the background of various shots and scenery.
Loved the old original but this is definitely better. Just missing the terrain and landing pad. Would've been great if they included two large base plates to match up to the original. Not the molded smaller lunar molds but the way they did the Lunar Lander a couple years back. They way they did the terrain for that.
This one and the Lion Knight's Castle are on my must-get list. I've preordered two of these (would have ordered more, but LEGO limited me to two) and they were already backordered.
I'm also very interested in the alternate builds... but my first rebuild is probably going to be a MOC combining my two sets into a single even bigger spaceship.
I preordered 2 of these the day the set was announced. This is the only day 1 August 1st set for me. Wish LEGO would ship preorders a few days early so the sets would arrive near the release date.
We really need more original lego themes. I go to the store and all I see that's original is city, and then all licensed properties. Some of the original themes really encouraged combining and making your own mocs, that I dont feel the licensed sets do quite as well.
Yes! Me and a friend of mine were just discussing this the other day. There are too many Star Wars/Marvel/DC/Harry Potter sets and not enough of the "Legoland" sets. City, Friends and Technic are the only ones that come to mind when I think of modern original Lego themes..
If you are right, then this ship must powered by an infinite improbability drive, and there would be absolutely no reason not to get it; that is, if it where not for the tragic absence of a minifig-scale towel.
My childhood was magical.Transformers,Zoids..and space Lego. When I was 10,a fellow pupil got bored with it and gave me an entire shopping bag of space Lego parts that roughly doubled my collection.Heaven.
I honestly think this is the best set of the year...and it's been a fantastic year. There is just so much to love--the box art and manual is great, the build experience designed well, the set itself is amazing with tons of technical features and play, the price is FANTASTIC for all you get, and it's a 3-in-1 which my kids and I enjoy doing. On top of that it is dripping in nostalgia and fun. I absolutely loved building mine with my kids and it's durable enough for them to play with it. I can't say enough good things about it!
I grew up with LEGO. I remember when the Galaxy Explorer was introduced all those years ago. And with my parents funding, I tried to get all the Space sets. I got better than half. As the years pass, I still get LEGO sets that get my attention. This got my attention and has been on pre-order for a bit, now I am waiting for it to arrive. Patiently...
I'm a very casual Lego fan so I didn't know this was coming. I was cruising through Walmart the other day, saw this on the shelf, and said "WTF?!" out loud. The box grabbed my attention like nothing else because it took me back to my childhood. Needless to say, I bought it right then and there. Haven't assembled it yet, but I will be soon enough. What a great set. LEGO PLEASE, do more re imagined retro space sets like this!
lego, please, do more space themes. BTW I am not a classic space fan and don't really like the design, but love the fact it's a dollhousey spaceship. Should I return my Dagobah Training stuff for this one?
Finished building mine yesterday and I haven’t had so much fun building a set. every other Lego set I’ve had I’ve had something to nitpick about but this set I’m just so happy and I love to look at it. I was born way after the original but if you asked me what classic Lego was like I always had the space explorer in mind. And now I have one of my own and god am I happy I’m that I do
I’ve always loved the classic lego space theme, sadly was never around when they were released but I’ve grabbed every set that was made to respect those days
Absolutely was drawn to this set as my parents couldn't afford the original back in the day. Walmart has it now for $75 I picked up 2! Want more sets like this Lego!
Although I am a Castle and a Pirates fan, but here I loved the Galaxy Explorer over the Lion Knights Castle. The Castle is too big and has so many features and figures, which is tempting, but at the same time I find it to be overwhelming, which is why I loved the spaceship here, and frankly the character Benny was the reason I loved the space theme
Awesome set. Good review. Ordered it with some VIP coupons for 80€. Even got a free pirates-parts-pack as bonus, another kid moment to relive. Very glad I did not get the 70816 Benny Space Ship 8 years ago, that one is so bland compared to this. If I do have to state a downside: this would have been great with a moon crater baseplate.
Why didn't you swoop this in your video? It looks swoopable and all, but if I don't actually see it swooping how do I know that it won't explode or spontaneously catch fire once I go wild with this thing???
Actually, if you compare minifigs, you'll see the chin strap of the helmet, a notorious weak point on the original, is thicker and done in the style of more modern space helmets on the newer minifig.
It's not better than the original but i am still glad it exists :) . I bought 2 of them. I have the original 3 ships on display in any case. You could actually pre-order this set in OZ anyway.
the packaging IS a bit of a disappointment. the original packaging had a flip-top-lid [like most of them did back in the late 70's and early 80's] AND had trays for placing your bricks when disassembled. this is the ONE thing i was really hoping lego would revive just for the galaxy explorer, considering the new castle is such a huge set it wouldn't make any sense to match what #375 had.
altough i'l a lego castle fanatic, i've to admit this set is the better of the 2 new IOCON sets. Bigger is not always better I want more classic lego space!
This is true to the original homage is truly a great design. That said, I do think there is a flaw in there: the 2 thruster engines on the side seem to be built in the image of jet engines with air intakes (the black ring), when, jet engines should not be used in space, because there is no air. I don't think I am nit picking because the rest of the ship is designed to such high standard this one flaw really stands out.
@@thomaskathmann8463 Thanks for the explanation, I have to believe that. The slanted body with the uneven (level) canopies really remind me of the blue power jet (31039)'s cockpit. The blue power jey one of my most favorite set, which I believe is from the same designer, whom I myself think is probably the best designer within the organization now.
@@1plaintext Come on, the classic space sets are complete fiction anyway. Don´t ge me wrong, I really like them, back in the 80´s they were really cool sets with lots of play features. But from a technical standpoint just pure fantasy. Maybe you could say the air intakes are to be used on planets that have an atmosphere.
Granted the original was not any better in terms of shape, but I still think the upgrade should look better proportioned. Nope, not for me. I would rather buy the castle.
Very disappointing to see broken and warped pieces in some consumers and reviewers sets as with LEGO "onLY tHE bEsT Is gOOD EnOUgH" what happened to the quality control or the quality/strength of parts a disappointing start to an near exceptional reimagining/modernisation of a CLASSIC. Wasn't around for the classic space theme i had/grew up with the likes of Galaxy Squad but as a LEGO fan couldn't deny it's importance or charm I loved the Idea Benny's spaceship, Spaceship,SPACESHIP! but always thought it was too clustered and busy making for a messy and unappealing build, this however while not being a spaceship a Galaxy Explorer will do more than good especially with the fact that it can be built in 3 different ways I'm surely getting 2 and so glad it's within my price range and budget.
Me too. I think a Classics line would do great, rereleasing sets in their original form. Btw 928 is not that hard to eBay, if you watch long enough and don't grab the first one you see.
But it isn´t a re-release, it´s a retro set with different parts and different building techniques. I think Lego did a great job here, but I do think that it´s only for the 90 years anniversary. Maybe we get more in 10 years. I also do wish they did 100% original reissues of some great sets, but I don´t think they will.
Is this really an 18 and over set? I haven't cracked this open yet. I'd picked up a 2nd for my friend's kid who's only 8...so I might be 10 years too early. XD
