Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246): bhpho.to/2wIbS25 amzn.to/2vzwJQs
Leica VisoFlex EVF: bhpho.to/2wn42bo
I can't believe it, I finally have the latest Leica M Monochrom in my hand, the Typ 246. I remember being so excited when I had the original M Monochrom to review, and I had the same feeling once again. There's something about shooting a camera with so many limits (manual focus, rangefinder viewfinder, monochromatic images, etc.) and yet gives you so much creative freedom. Check out my full review with tons of sample images. Thanks for your support by liking and subscribing. As my channel grows your support becomes more important to me so I do appreciate all your kind words and support.

Re-watching this presentation is a trip down memory lane. (I pressed the “Like” button, years ago.) Still loving my M Type 246 Monochrom! I actually started rangefinder shooting with a new M10, six years ago, but when my M10 was down, after a mishap, I added a pre-owned M 246, in order to keep using a rangefinder, but with the added aspect of learning to “see” in black, greys, and white. (I had a modest, one-time financial windfall in 2018.) In 2021, and again in 2022, I considered “upgrading” to an M10 Monochrom, probably pre-owned, but each time, decided to hold onto to my 24MP M cameras. Thus far, no regrets.

Nice review and glad to have met another left-eye shooter. :) My dream camera. I like how back-to-basic it is. I shoot a lot in BW, mainly on a Sony A6000 (for now). The way I play 'Leica' mode is to shoot on BW JPG, force to be as good as I can on exposure and focus, minimal/no post process, no crop.

Using the EVF there is always a delay with the curtain goes ** true for M240 ** up and enabled Live View. There are times when the EVF is nice to have. I like to shoot from the waist level, and situations of critical focus; the EVF is great for these.

Another reason to go for the MP and kilo's of tri-x. Even Leica can't overrule the original without losing the goal of black and white: nothing compares to the poetry evoked by siver halide crystals in a good image.

Nice review. I've always loved the results of the M Monochrom cameras but haven't been able to afford one or justify the price. I've owned plenty of Leica rangefinders as well and the camera has a certain romance to it that I haven't experienced in non rangefinders. I think you're right that b&w film or a b&w only sensor has an additional romance to the results. It's easy to channel film noir movies shooting a Monochrom.

Wats up Take! Your reviews are getting more and more engaging and almost all the cameras you review are right up my alley. That said, i have a very minor gripe about your intro Click. Click.. For some reason it annoys the heck out of me. LoL. Why won't you just press the shutter button on the camera to make the click sound!?? I'm sorry, i love the unique sound of different cameras make especially film. I just don't get why you have to say click click out loud, when you can just use the camera you are reviewing to make the sound, unless you have a backstory behind why your intro is like that. But anyways, it is really just a minor gripe and i do love watching your reviews. Are you planning to do any kind of workshop or photowalk in the future?

That shot in the empty building is stunning. Also love seeing the Summicron-c 40/2 stretching It's legs.
@bigheadtaco

+andrew shields thanks. The only difference between the Leica 40mm f/2 and the Minolta M-Rokkor 40mm f/2 was that the Minolta added multi-coating. At the time it reduced flare, but since it was first gen technology, the coat hazed over time and actually created more flare. My copy is pretty good, but some look pretty bad. The Leica 40mm f/2 has no chance of this happening, so technically a better option if you had to choose.
@andrewshieldsphoto
@andrewshieldsphoto 9 лет назад
+bigheadtaco Gotcha, speaking of m-rokkors going wrong over time, my 28/2.8 is a disaster inside the first sealed element. Such a shame that nearly all of them are compromised at this point. I was just last night struggling over if I should sell it or not. Even the ones that claim to be haze free on eBay look hazy w/ close inspection of the photos. Bummer.
@bigheadtaco
@bigheadtaco 9 лет назад
andrew shields yes, Leica played it smart by not coating lenses. My 28mm is also a mess. It's kind of cool in certain situations, but no use shooting in the sun.the 40 and 90 are perfect though. No issues.

The 90 degree swivel of the Olympus VF-2 has a use that you hadn't considered. With the VF-2 at 90 degrees and holding the Leica M vertically at the same time, you could focus on and shoot a subject standing to your left or right without - hopefully - their knowing.

Hi I am a very happy owner of a Leica monochrome M type 246 and I would like to know. Witch type of flash is mounted on the leica in this review. Because I am considering to buy one, after I saw a video of a famous photographer who was know for using flash for street photography back in the 80s. And I really got inspired by that. I hope some of you could give me the brand and type of model it is? 😊

Watching some old videos again :) You say ISO correctly, “eye-so”. It's a word derived from Greek for “equal”, “same”. It's not I.S.O. The name of the organization doesn't even abbreviate to ISO, it would be IOS (International Organization for Standardization). The choice for ISO was to not have different abbreviations for different languages and even on their official videos they say it as one word. But the pronunciation changes from language to language (for instance, in their Portuguese language videos, they say “ee-zo“ because, in Portuguese, “i” always sounds like “ee” and “s” in the middle of a word sounds like “z”, unless it's doubled). Great review.
@bigheadtaco
@bigheadtaco 7 лет назад
ha ha, ya I've had this conversation with others before. I know officially it's not an acronym, but I'm sure there was an intended acronym since the previous two film speed standards were called ASA (American Standards Organization) and DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung). You know how many Japanese words are mispronounced in the English language? It's horrible... us English speakers are bad with properly pronouncing foreign words :-(
@douglasdrumond
@douglasdrumond 7 лет назад
bigheadtaco Nikon immediately comes to mind. I studied a little Japanese, so I already knew how to say it. One thing I always do is looking for the original pronunciation. But nobody in Brazil understand me when I say Voigtländer or moiré. You would laugh hard if you heard a Brazilian saying Ricoh 😂
@bigheadtaco
@bigheadtaco 7 лет назад
Do they roll the 'r' and say Ricco Suave?
@douglasdrumond
@douglasdrumond 7 лет назад
No, the initial “r” sounds similar to initial “h” in Japanese, but the “o” is open, not closed, and the stress syllable is the last (it's two syllables, "ri", sounding like "hi" in Japanese, but a little bit stronger, not so aspirated, and "coh" with an open sound, like the "ou" in "bought")
@Gravitys-NOT-a-force
@Gravitys-NOT-a-force 8 лет назад
If you had been shooting with the 0.95 Noctilux 'wide open,' I think you would have found that the Olympus VF-2 is a necessity. You would not be able to focus accurately the 0.95 Noctilux wide open with the optical viewfinder alone.

Hi ! great video that convinced me (Yes today in Feb 2021 !!!) to buy second hand this camera. I'm a film shooter, especially mid format with nice Hasselblad and Fuji analog cameras. I stil use Nikon F analog cameras as well as a Leica M4 and Leica M6TTL film cameras. I have some digital cameras from Nikon ( D850, Df and Z6) and didn't know if it would be a good idea to buy one digital more from Leica ... Nikon Df is doing a great job (great deep colours), Nikon D850 is sharp (big detailed files) and Z6 is versatile with it's electronic viewfinder ! But this Leica 246, still in 2021, is a very detailed BW camera and I love it ! I do appreciate so much the colors of my Nikon Df but the Leica 246 BW files are amazing. If you do own a Leica M3, M2, M4 or M6 analog camera, this Leica 246, if you can't afford the up to date material, is the digital camera for you ! Thanks for the very detailed video ...

I just bought one in 2023. I’ll flip it to a m10m in a few months after I get some glass. Got a Q2M a few months ago and fell in love; same time out of love with my heavy Zeiss primes on canon bodies. Love all 9 Zeiss primes in this pelican next to me, but I’m 70 tomorrow and (great shape but) things hurt.

I lol’d when you talked about the door unlock because it’s in a stupid spot. My cup holders are in a normal spot however on older BMW’s they had the extendo cup holders which seem flimsy.

@TimGanderPhotographer
@TimGanderPhotographer 8 лет назад
Just to be clear on one point about the affordability or otherwise of a camera like this (or any camera); the cost of film and processing can only be taken into account if you're not charging clients for disposables. So basically, if you're an amateur who shoots a lot of photos every year, yes you 'might' save money. If you're professional, it's as if you just bought the next few years' film stock, processing and scanning costs up-front and now you have to go charge clients enough to make up for it. Otherwise, fun review for a camera I probably won't be able to afford for a while yet.
@pepsiplease69

I’d continue saying iso as opposed to I.S.O. Nothing wrong with it. Great review btw.
@bigheadtaco
@bigheadtaco 4 года назад
It's actually the correct way of saying it. ISO standard is not an acronym. If you go to their website and look under ABOUT, this is what it says under the heading 'It's All In The Name': Because 'International Organization for Standardization' would have different acronyms in different languages (IOS in English, OIN in French for Organisation internationale de normalisation), our founders decided to give it the short form ISO. ISO is derived from the Greek isos, meaning equal. Whatever the country, whatever the language, we are always ISO.

Your saying to add up how much we spend on film etc, but also you must factor in the depreciation of the Monochrom camera, in 5 years what will it be worth ? if Fuji came out with a black and white camera, value gone. While my leica m3 will hold it's value.
@bigheadtaco
@bigheadtaco 8 лет назад
+Rabi Jassi yes that is true, although if you don't plan to sell it, then depreciation is not as important. But you are correct, if you keep your M3 for 30 years and continue shooting film, that will always be cheaper than upgrading your digital camera every 5 years.

What's interesting is that the "quirks" of the Leica and the BMW aren't quirks at all. They are actually well thought out for safety. Being able to lock or unlock your doors from the center is better safety. The driver is in complete control of the car. The Leica does it for the same reason. You can't really accidentally change a setting without deliberately making that choice. You have to physically do it. I think it's really smart
@bigheadtaco
@bigheadtaco 7 лет назад
ha ha, I am only half teasing. BMW and Honda are my favourite car manufacturers. I love the M5 (pre-auto transmission) and the entire 3 series rides better than any other manufacturer's mid level sedans (Lexus/Toyota gets pretty close). It's just a matter of getting use to a car. If you drive mostly American and Asian cars, you just have to re-learn. Even the gas is filled on the opposite side! Ha ha. Sometimes I go to the wrong side when pulling up at a station.... newbie

@bigheadtaco
@bigheadtaco 6 лет назад
MM246 has better dynamic range and image looks more natural black and white. However, it's easier to blow out highlights with MM246, where you can recover more with M10 since you're capturing in RGB
@pierrelavie656
@pierrelavie656 6 лет назад
bigheadtaco so, technically the m246 should produce better b&w images than the m10 but there’s less room for “error” in the composition of the image? I just want to make sure I’m understanding it all correctly. :)

Great review. Really curious about this camera. There are Leica fans who claim it gathers as much detail in RAW as in medium format. How true is this?
@bigheadtaco
@bigheadtaco 8 лет назад
+Ryan Villanueva I don't have a medium format to compare it against, so I can't say for a certainty. However, comparing with the M240 there is definitely more subtle detail, especially in the transitions in the tonal range
@baker2niner
@baker2niner 9 лет назад
Take, Removing all the Leica goodness - which is important to me - and focusing on the output, I'm curious how you would compare your GR's B&W conversions with the 246? For a disposable camera, I am impressed by the GR's B&W tonality. I'm not expecting to hear that the GR is "better", but perhaps "more than adequate". PS: I grew up with Nikons, Leica and Hasselblad in the day when glass mattered more than "sensor" (everyone had the same TriX sensor) and you bought bodies based on glass and durability. It's the other side of function -- I still struggle a bit with Nikon menus (you have to hold and spin, too, for ISO) and all I can equate Sony's to are TV remotes. PPS: Cost of shooting film vs digital is more complex. For pros there is no other choice than digital. It makes economic and practical sense. For most amateurs who shoot perhaps a roll or two a month it's not close, film can be very inexpensive. I do both and often wonder why. In digital, I have to become a computer nerd and need to get a good box/monitor to handle photos every couple years, LR & PS (with $@#$^ annoying updates!) and printing (what's your ink maintenance strategy?) are hideously expensive to do yourself. Of course, we masses cannot go back to film, but cost is not the reason.
@bigheadtaco
@bigheadtaco 9 лет назад
+baker2niner you make a few good points. I'll make sure to address in a future video that I'm planning to do a collaboration effort on: film vs digital. As for GR's b&w, I always said it's second best to Leica's. There's something about the GR images converted to b&w that's very good. Dynamic range isn't anywhere near the M246, but the final product is better than the Sony's and Canon's and Nikon's, especially if you're a Tri-X black and white fan. I know some film shooters who shoot 20 rolls a month easily. That adds up quickly. It's usually a binge thing, and they usually end up slowing down due to economics. Software and hardware upgrades to handle images is also a serious reality (the new Canon 120mp sensor is cost prohibitive to most at this point because of the need to upgrade everything from memory cards to computer hardware). Thanks again for your comment!
@baker2niner
@baker2niner 9 лет назад
+bigheadtaco I like the smooth mid-tones of the latest Tri-X, though that is not fashionable. It looks as smooth as the old Pan-X and it doesn't have the '60s newsie grain until you push it hard nor huge contrast unless you mess with development (both easy). Crying shame, really, how good Tri-X is. The last buggy whip is the best. Film v. digital is a dead horse topic, but if you do a comparison be sure to consider printing and a hybrid flow. I scan film to proof and print the ones to hang. Scans are much better than wet proofs and also handle all your web publishing. $800 for a decent scanner + B&W chems and a bag is pretty much all you need. B&W is still reasonable ($6-8/roll?) developed in bag. Color trannies ARE expensive (figure at least $20US/roll, processed), but 6x6 and up format transparencies are magnificent and bigger formats scan better. Unfortunately, I don't see much point shooting 35mm film any more; most any purpose I can think of is handled better by digital (action) or a larger format film (landscape). It's mostly to keep the old cameras in use or training. Oddly, we shoot a lot more images today, but 'hard' print far fewer. We need a 120mp camera for our web posts!
@bigheadtaco
@bigheadtaco 9 лет назад
baker2niner thanks for your comment. Yes, film is no longer a necessary photographic tool for professional photographers. It's become a hobbyist's tool to create and keep alive classic film cameras. Large format is a different story of course. As for new Tri-X vs old, I still have my last 30 rolls of 2004 expiry so I can't say what the new ones look like. I'll probably start using it next year. Will I continue shooting film? Yes, until they stop making it. Is it a necessary tool for me? Nope. I just love shooting it, but you're right, the process is a hassle. I don't own a scanner and I don't develop myself at home. Luckily I have friends in the industry that do it for me. I will be sad if film is ever completely discontinued, but I don't see it happening within the next 10 years. Thanks again for your comment and happy shooting film or digital!

I had purchased mine new from B&H and had planned to use it on a trip Europe, but my plans fell through. I later discovered my body had the corrosion issue. I only had 6 shutter actuations and 5 were the test shots for the artifacts that appeared in the images. What a disappointment.

Take, Excellent review of the M 246, thank you. Since the JPEG and Raw are the same size, which should one use and if there is any limitation to using the JPEG that reproduces the camera settings right out of the box? I had been using Nikon D-800 RAW then convert to B & W with Aperture, with decent results, although nothing to compare with the M 246 + 50, Lux. Thank you your straight shooting reviews. R

+Andrew Criswell great question. To some extent yes. When you blow out the highlights of an image, there's no recovery, there's absolutely nothing there. At least with colour information, there's always a slight hint of a colour that you can bring back. Also for using specific colour channels to bring up or down luminance in isolation is not possible. However, what you gain is wider gradient in tonality, higher resolution and better high ISO performance.

Nice review, can you share something of taking photo with 90mm lens?
@bigheadtaco
@bigheadtaco 8 лет назад
+John Lin it's tough shooting with the 90 if you want to shoot wide open and focus using the optical viewfinder. I would recommend shooting with the optional EVF or worst case the rear LCD screen. Because I rarely go over 50mm, I'm not the best at focusing with the 90mm, but I know guys who can do so very easily, but at f/4.0. I think it's a great portrait lens on a tripod, or a medium telephoto but stopped down. It is sharp wide open though, and the rending of the out-of-focus area is pretty cool.

Thank you for the video! What are your thoughts on the Rokkor lens you used? Do you have any reviews of them and would you only recommend use for the 246 or would you say "thumbs up" for color, too? I'm glad I subscribed!
@bigheadtaco
@bigheadtaco 6 лет назад
The 40mm f/2 M-Rokkor lens is fantastic, but it doesn't compare to modern lenses. However, the point is shooting with these older lenses with unique character. It flares very easily, but it's pin sharp in the middle. Lacks the contrast of modern lenses, but it's easy enough to adjust later in post (either in darkroom with red filters, or in Lightroom by bumping up contrast)

bigheadtaco Good to know. Lots to consider. I'm looking at either SL or M10 with 35mm lens. It's tough to find a great 246 that people are willing to let go at a sub $7k. I know there is more lens versatility with the SL but no juicy manual controls like the M10! How do you decide the best for some landscape AND a steady people shooter workhorse?

+bigheadtaco How does the type 246 Mono compare with Fuji's x-t1's black and whites pics? The Fuji's x-t1's B&W are beautiful. Are the Leica's b&w more refined?

+cylurian I haven't had much success with b&w with Fujifilm. I will be reviewing software soon that is suppose to do wonders for Fujifilm RAW files to convert into B&W images. @bovver6092 9 лет назад
bigheadtaco Of course you can choose both, but which do you think you would use more? I like the photo samples you took with the Monochrom btw. Especially the one of the abandoned building with the pigeon on the window sill. I am convinced to save up for this Monochrom and the 35mm Summilux then I will keep my other Oly and Fuji mirrorless to shoot color photos with :) Then I think I won't buy another camera gear for a LONG while.
@bigheadtaco
@bigheadtaco 9 лет назад
+bovver wonder I woiuld probably stick with the M246 because of the romance of shooting b&w. Since I shoot for myself 95% of the time, I don't need to be practical. If I was a commercial photographer, you can't just shoot b&w only, unless that's what you're famous for. M246, 35 and 50mm Summicron, my Ricoh GR and my iPhone. I would be happy.
@bovver6092
@bovver6092 9 лет назад
+bigheadtaco I figure before the end of the year I will have enough funds to get the M246. But do you prefer the Summicron over the Summilux? But you're right I noticed that you always stop down anyways and the Summicron fits your shooting style. I was planning on getting the 35 lux then the 50 lux since I'm a big fan of wide apertures and bokeh.
@bigheadtaco
@bigheadtaco 9 лет назад
bovver wonder Yes I have nothing against the Lux or the Cron. In fact, the Summarit kit is an amazing deal, and one of the sharpest Leica lenses I've ever shot with was the 28 Elmarit. Tom Smith of Leica N.America confirmed it is one of their sharpest lenses wide open. But if you like shallow depth of field images, the Lux or Crons are the way to go, although I still say that the rendering on the Crons look nicer

@bigheadtaco

+Kota Permai make sure when you focus with the 90mm that the EVF focus matches the focus distance on the lens itself. Either your rangefinder alignment is off or the lens is off. Is it at infinity?

I have a topic for you to do. I don't know Leica history. But Leica is a German company, why are some of the lenses made in Canada? were thre bodies also made in Canada? Could be an interesting video.
@bigheadtaco
@bigheadtaco 8 лет назад
+FilmFactry most companies that are based in a country with a high standard of living thus high labour costs will produce overseas to lower costs and/or increase production. Even the newer Leica T lenses are all made in Japan, and the digital compacts are all made by Panasonic in Japan. For a time, Leica had a factory in Canada making both bodies and lenses. For collectors, they are not coveted like the German made Leica cameras, but because of this, the prices are more reasonable. Thanks for your question :-)

@bigheadtaco
@bigheadtaco 7 лет назад
In the old days it was really Tri-X versus HP5, and I never liked the muddiness of the HP5. However, I know the emulsion has changed since then (1990s) so I'm unfairly teasing it. In fact, many of my friends shoot it exclusively, and I really like the look. The Tri-X originally was ISO 320 but was pushed to 400, and that added a bit of nice grain. The old HP5 didn't have that nice grain structure when under exposed, but the new HP5 is clean. Again, I'm just playing off of an old bias. Most films from the major film manufacturers are really good today, very few duds.

iso (short for isos, meaning equal) not I.S.O. Nice review.
@aranhegarty6203
@aranhegarty6203 8 лет назад
+Kevin Shull It stands for International Standards Organization. In the engineering community, we say "iso", less technical people often say I.S.O., neither is incorrect. Saying that "ISO" it is short for "equal" is wrong in this context. For more information see: www.iso.org/iso/home/store/catalogue_tc/catalogue_tc_browse.htm?commid=48420
@KevinShull
@KevinShull 8 лет назад
The International Organization for Standardization often referred to as ISO, is the organization that assigned the iso number (shortened from isos) to the sensitivity of the digital sensor. The American Standards Association or ASA (American National Standards Institute or ANSI is the name at present) assigned ASA numbers to film speeds. I believe this is where the confusion occurs. It's assumed that iso must be an acronym like ASA and that it stands for International Standards Organization. This is incorrect in any context. The ISO in your link refers to the International Organization for Standardization, true, but the iso used for the digital iso number is a different term all together. You will have a difficult time finding a pro photographer that doesn't say I-S-O instead of iso. The photography community has championed the mistake and I think it's here to stay.
@bigheadtaco

+Kevin Shull I don't want to argue over something as silly as how to pronounce words, but being a Linguistics and English major, I can tell you that there is rarely a 'correct' way of saying anything as language evolves and changes. Even the way our parents said something 30 years ago can mean something entirely different a generation later, or how a word is pronounced. I worked for Kodak for a decade from 1995-2005, plus I worked as a commercial, wedding and sports photographer for the past 20 years, and considering the majority of my friends are professional photographers, I can tell you with absolute certainty that the pronunciation of ISO can go both ways. Even watch Chris from The Camera Store TV videos. He always says 'eye-sow' instead of 'I.S.O.' Now, perhaps this is more of a Canada vs USA or a west versus east coast thing, but neither is right or wrong. Some acronyms turn into pronounced words, while other remain acronyms with each word pronounced out.
@KevinShull
@KevinShull 8 лет назад
bigheadtaco I would never argue over small details. I only meant to clarify a common misunderstanding. I must say that after reading your comment I am a little discouraged. You have committed a logical fallacy by citing a list of personal experiences as evidence to your claim. Work history, associations and geography (Chris Niccolls, really?) are completely irrelevant on this topic. Even to absolute certainty. There is actually one right answer. All you had to do was look it up. The organization states that ISO (union of ASA and DIN standards, 1974) is not an acronym or initialism for the organization's full name in any official language. Because 'International Organization for Standardization' (not International Standards Organization) would have different acronyms in different languages (IOS in English, OIN in French for Organisation internationale de normalisation), the founders decided to give it the short form ISO. ISO is derived from the Greek isos, meaning equal. Share your beliefs and teach what you know and never confuse a belief as knowledge.
@bigheadtaco
@bigheadtaco 8 лет назад
Kevin Shull I'm not sure we're both talking about the same thing here. I'm saying it doesn't matter how a person pronounces a specific word, either 'eye-so' or 'I.S.O.' Are you arguing there is only one way to say it because of some historical fact of how or where the word came from? I'm not sure if this is your point?

+Sean Lynch Leica's electronics is always their weakness. As I showed, it has something to do with the EVF, which is really weird. For a small brand like Leica, I'm not surprised (Leica's total staff is probably the same as the total amount of managers at Canon or Sony) but when you buy a premium product, you would expect perfection, although this is not the reality of many premium products.

+Stuart Weber perhaps you can apply your theory to some of the cameras they produce using re-labelled Panasonic cameras, but the M246 is a very unique camera with the ability to capture images that most colour sensors can not. The rangefinder focus mechanism can be misaligned when not handled properly, but I know many who can calibrate themselves, which is something you can't say with most AF bodies and lenses if the focus is off. As for pricing, this is a luxury product and the price-performance is not great as is most luxury products.
