Where to find this naginata: ww4.aitsafe.com/go.htm?go=kult...
I really wish this was in a higher price (i.e. quality) range. Polearms are awesome, but this is a little underwhelming, despite having great potential. Okay for the price, but it leaves you wishing for something better made.
The Hanwei naginata is a much higher quality reproduction but it still has issues, which make the over $500 price tag a little painful.

I wish we had more naginatas in games. They're the most effective generalist weapon in feudal Japan.
@JasonJrake

I think I've read that they were favored for women, the idea being that it allowed them to engage (or just keep) a male attacker at a distance, where his physical strength was less of an advantage.
@jonajo9757
@jonajo9757 2 года назад
@@JasonJrake If I remember, that was a recent development? In historical Japanese combat (prior the 14th century), naginata were often used by foot retainers due to their ability to fend off warbands of armored samurai and other similarly armed retainers. Plus, it was preferred over shield + weapon for the reasons I've just mentioned.
@jonajo9757

@carbon1255
@carbon1255 6 лет назад
Actually, that is perfectly fine to say. 薙刀 is naginata, 刀 means blade, and pronounced on it's own as, Katana. Or in chinese, dao. (tou in japanese style chinese pronunciation) hence why some words have that suffix like tantou or nihontou (japanese sword, japanese person would call a katana that to you most likely) and so on. other ways it is pronounced are are -achi and -gatana. I have no idea why it becomes naginata and not nagatana or something, that is beyond my limited knowledge. However, I do know that 薙 (nagi) meant to weed, so I believe it literally means "weed cutter" And being that it is a blade, not a speartip, and it is not common for a sword to be on the end of a pole, I think it is fair to say that the handle on the katana looks odd ;) Also the most literal translation for a naginata I believe is scythe. (or at least scythe sword or something like that) Thus I guess you would "mow" with it.

For 90 dollars a decently shaped blade made out of an okay steel that can hold a proper temper isn't that bad. It's the kind of thing you could fix up for about twenty to fifty dollars (depending on the price you buy the materials at). You could then fix the minor issues and mark it up as a modded Musashi Naginata for more than twice the price. If possible I'd also suggest skipping out on the scabbard entirely if it costs extra and just buying some wooden floorboards or something while you're at the hardware store to make your own scabbard. it'll likely be less rattly than something that was mass-produced for multiple models of blade.

Now i have this in my mind... It's night, the wind is howling, rain is falling, lightnings in the background. Skall is back home, he's getting close to home silently with a black hood on his head. Suddently the wind gets stronger and the naginata start falling. Skall notice and start running [anime fast running effect background]. "I have to catch it before it touches the ground" skall start running faster, but the naginata if falling very quickly. "Damn... i'll never get there in time" "1 second" "0.5 seconds" "0.1 second" Skall runs very fast... but not fast enough. The naginata hits the groud when skall is 35 cm near. He looks at it to see if there is any damage... the scabbard is broken. Skall looks at the black sky while the rain drops are falling on his face and scream "NOOOOOOOOOOO" P.s.: I apologise for any grammar mistakes i could have made, i'm italian

Whats this? a Kids Naginata? Most Naginata should be around 2 metres long. In Katori Shinto Ryu we use originally one who is 2,5 and the Trainingversion for commute in the city is around 2,1m That one skall has doesn't seem to be even 1,75
@kidthorazine

They have to do that for shipping reasons. When I was ordering my nagamaki I was told that there are length restrictions for pretty much anything being shipped out of China at a reasonable price.
@carbon1255
@carbon1255 6 лет назад
yeah, you would expect a longer blade and certainly longer shaft. Though, they are nothing like as long as yari can be. very odd to see one with the blade not starting past head height though. Naginata tended to be used by samurai, and they did use shorter polearms than ashigaru etc. I think Katori shinto ryu particularly favours are more middle grip iirc, and thus makes better use of a longer naginata, wheras others use it at one end in a particular way, making the longer ones less useful. Obviously, if you are 6 foot or something, a longer naginata is a much better fit. Samurai were rather consistently around 5'4 in the sengoku period. Makes the 2.1m yumi pretty damn amazing x)
@dungad24
@dungad24 6 лет назад
I'm glad others are pointing this out. I've never understood the super short polearms being called naginata.
@TheTenguwarrior
@TheTenguwarrior 6 лет назад
@Carbon 12: Yeah we use Onaginata with middle Grip in Katori Shinto ryu. So we can use the blade and the Ishizuki(Stonebreaker/Buttcap) to attack and deflect. But still even in modern Naginatado they use a 2,12m high Naginata. Skall says he is of average height(~1,75m in my Book) So the Naginata should towering over him. Everythink else should be a joke(or Skall a dwarf). Also i'm thankfull for kidthorazine's explanation, but that doesn't change anything that this Naginata seems to be pretty shitty. It's to short, The Saya isn't fitting right and skall Says that he fears using the blade on harder material.
@kidthorazine
@kidthorazine 6 лет назад
Yeah I really wish a company would find a workaround for this, like importing blades and fittings from China but making the shafts in North America, it might add a bit to the price but it would be well worth it, as is you can order a decent Naginata blade from Kris cutlery for about $100, and haft it yourself, or pay someone to do it, but that tends to cost a lot and you still have to source the fittings, which isn't cheap or easy. Of course that doesn't help if you want to get an Odachi or Nagamaki in a length that is properly proportionate for a modern person, like for example my Nagamaki ended up being ~54'' long in total (27.5'' blade ~26'' tsuka) which is historically accurate, but designed for someone standing about 5' 5''.

ThatGuyYouKnow wrong. Naginatas where common on horseback and almost as used as tachis and yumis. They where great anti cav weapons. Again, 2nd mongol invasions onward the yari was superior against heavy armor and in formation use and cheaper to make thus replacing naginatas that need more room to attack with.They where commom on horseback and took inspiration from ancient China(see Guan Yu for the idolized use of pole swords). Naginatas where used alot in the early samurai days as dueling on horse back as well. Due to yaris and heavy infantry rising,they became mere female weapons and relics.

random though I had to get out there: steel carbon content. it seems that skall and other sword reviewers in general, as well as many sellers, seem to have different classifications for steel as smiths. myself and many other bladesmiths I know consider 1060 steel to be medium carbon content, and I myself classify nothing below 1070 steel to be high carbon, so when I hear some people call 1060 or, and this hurts to say, even 1045 a "high carbon steel" I get really annoyed. now, I dont know why this is, but I felt like I just had to mention it.

I've been looking so hard to find a decent naginata, but eventually I settled on the United Cutlery one. Sure it is short, but it's the most sturdy, with its durable fibreglass shaft. I like how it can be tossed around no problems. It's affordable too. I don't think a wooden pole is...optimal... for a naginiata.
@planescaped
@planescaped 6 лет назад
They really aren't. With the naginata's construction, any hit against a solid object is going to put a tremendous amount of strain on the tang. Even the best naginata is going to inevitably break with use. But they were made to be easily repaired.
@bigbrowntau
@bigbrowntau 4 месяца назад
It's also really short. Naginatas I've used have been in the 210 to 225cm range. Sports naginatas are in that range too. Apparently there's issues getting longer shafts delivered, but I'd rather pay extra for a quality naginata made to the right length. Thanks for the review!

a comment from my dad: I read of a samurai, years ago, that was crossing a destroyed bridge on one of the beams and he was being shot at by archers. All he had was a naginata, he swung the naginata so well that both sides were watching in amazement as he deflected all the arrows. And after the battle they counted 80 arrows sticking out of his armor.

This is a very late reply, but I believe you are referring to Gochi-in no Tajima/Tajima the Arrow-Cutter, and he was a sohei/warrior monk instead of a samurai. It was at Yodo River in the Battle of Uji in 1180 during the Genpei War. Although many sources cite this incident from The Tale of the Heike, it was compiled from oral story telling traditions sometime prior to 1330, and in some accounts, it was a long sword instead of a naginata. It tends to vary.

Buttt I found out through vigorous use that when swinging a Naginata, tons of force doesn’t work so well, and will make the shaft flex but if you hold lower positions and let the weight and inertia of the pole and blade itself swing freely it will straight up lop through small trees, thicker than femur bones EASILY.
@kidthorazine
@kidthorazine 6 лет назад
That white stuff is wax used to protect the blade during shipping, it's extremely common on Chinese katanas and whatnot and will eventually go away. Also the two top fittings are usually held in place by the mekugi and friction, that's why they have the holes in them.

Judging from the reflection, the blade is flat grind. It should be convex grind to be historically accurate.

If you also like the earlier wakisashi bladed ones, you could always buy a nice wakisashi with a good blade and use that. Can come with a nice sheath, be a bit more value for money too. Also if you are interested in doing that, you could make it the right length either way. At least a couple of metres. This one is limited by transport restrictions of long items (ie would get wayy too expensive to ship)
@hansvonmannschaft9062
@hansvonmannschaft9062 4 года назад
The different types of residue that tend to come in way too many sheaths or scabbards, regardless of the brand, can be easily cleaned by straightening a piece of wire, hooking a few patches of microfiber or cloth, embedded in simple rubbing alcohol, and then cleaning the inside as if you were cleaning a firearm's barrel. Takes patience but gets the job done. Rubbing alcohol also has the advantage of evaporating quickly and without leaving any residue itself, so don't worry if it drips inside too much. Just don't go full "universal flood" on your item and you should be ok. Secondly, I got that naginata, but came branded under another make. Those are manufactured in the same facility that makes swords for Ronin Katana, for example. Mine, however, came fully assembled and well padded in a rather long cardboard box, no loose fittings, tight scabbard - but one that could break as well, as warned by the shop clerk. Price was about the same. But hey, this video is two years old, so who knows, maybe they did listen to the reviews. Cheers.
@windhelmguard5295
@windhelmguard5295 6 лет назад
the scabard not fiting and cracking could be caused by moisture or a lack thereoff, if the wood had not been properly dried before manufacturing and then dried too quickly wherever you stored it. my father had to fix a lot of back panels from ancient cupboards and the likes which cracked when the owners took them out of the sheds, barns or whatever, where they have been decaying for centuries and took them into their heated homes.

I identify as an attack helicopter and get very upset when my historical strategy games do not let me build helicopters. I think my sexual fetish and orientations should be catered for in every game even though they are not the majority of the player base (as far as I am aware). Having said that, there are WAY more sexualised men in videogames than women... Jesus everyone is muscle heavy and well endowed. Also, there are games, such as the later saints row games, that DO have ballsack physics. And furthermore Loner, my fiancee loves sexy women in her videogames, and she is a woman last I checked, you sexist, internalised homophobe. I really do think you guys are kinda gross to think that women playing games don't want big breasted women, and realistic body physics, and others cannot think that it can be artistic and beautiful without playing with one hand. And playing with the other hand. Basically, if i want to play with handsome muscly well endowed men and petite well endowed women whilst I eat pizza and fart, well, you guys just don't understand what it means to be a gamer. And I am well aware that apache longbow was the last good helicopter videogame. And it won't run anymore. I cry myself to sleep sometimes. I miss the good old days when I could grab a joystick with each hand. alas.

i bought three $20 decoration katanas some 13 years ago. one day i stopped caring about them so took a swing at a tree with one of them and it became a sickle. not even kidding, the blade wrapped around the tree, it did a 240 degree turn on the edge axis. the handle pretty much exploded. thankfully i was wearing tick gloves, because the iron part inside the handle was just a thin square maybe 7mm wide. i tried to pierce a door with one of the others and it bent in half (this time the way you'd expect, along the side of the blade) like cheap cutlery. although it did make it to the other side. the other one just rusted to death.
@CoffeeSnep
@CoffeeSnep 6 лет назад
I found two machetes a few years ago. I restored them, got the rust off, hammered the blade back into shape (they were had my bent) and then when all was said and done I used it on a tree. After three swings I looked at the blade. It looked like a noodle. Each time I swung the blade broke and bent inward. :(

no, nagamaki doesn't have a "yokote" like katana and tachi blade, their blade are more like naginata blade ( without yokote) but longer and the tang are also longer and curved. And also a naginata of the edo period can be short ( if the idea is that the samuraï's wife could be in a position to defend herself indoor... having a long polearm wouldn't be a good idea)

Traditional glues were made of a rice paste that remains water soluble for repairs. This on many weapons. They could have left the fittings lightly glued for customization. I'm researching weapons for the likely-hood of "There were giants in those days.". The walking staff with installable spear head seems to be the likely character, or a Yari. Having a combat solid blade is is important, so a modern fitting might be needed.

It's a good Naginata if you intend to use it for practice. Light targets allow you to practice your technique (alignment) during cutting drills to ensure you're handling the weapon correctly and actually cutting through your swings during drills: instead of being lazy and wafting through it. It's just not made nor manufactured to be a "battle ready" implement. Think of it like an Iaito version of a Naginata where instead of listening to the sound to ensure your technique is precise: you have a sharpened blade suitable for light cutting to ensure your technique to good. Water bottles make excellent test mediums for cutting practice because any deviations in edge alignment will either cause the bottle to fly off like you've hit it with a baseball bat: or if you roll the edge during the cut the plastic will either rip or tear during the cut. Particularly if you group 2-3 water bottles together and cut them as a single target. A really great way to test your cutting technique is to duct tape 3 water bottles together and hang them from something over head: cut that. You'll be able to see any flaws in your technique. Even worse than that: string up 3 water bottles: without the duct tap. Just hang them together so they group up. If the blade you use doesn't have an exceptional blade geometry, or your technique is off: one, possible two, of the water bottle will simply be batted away rather than being cut. Aside from rolling multiple wara mats together: hanging multiple water bottles together, free hanging but grouped up, is the single best technique test you'll ever find. If your technique is off, or your blade doesn't have excellent cutting qualities: you'll know it right away.

That wit stuff is probebly clay. For the sheed of katana's or other Japanse blades the put clay in to protect the sharpness of the blade edge. It should keep the edge from damaging in the sheed because it is really soft but clay is strong enough to not be cut by the smallest amount of force sow. That's why the witte stuff is on the blade.
