Thanks to Ben from ‪@stitchdown‬ I've had the opportunity to try out this pair of ‪@nicksboots‬ Urban Loggers, using them in my job as a cement finisher as well as in my daily life away from work. Nicks is a Pacific Northwest boot company with a long history of making boots using traditional methods and high quality materials. I won't beat around the bush: I love these boots.

I’ve got two pairs of Franks and one pair of whites. Worth every penny. The heel does get mixed reviews, but I also really like how it looks. Even if I didn’t like the look it would be worth the comfort in my opinion.

I took the plunge into the world of quality stitchdown boots a couple of years ago. I too was hesitant because of the price and risk of not getting the correct size & fit. Now I have multiple pairs of Nick's and White's plus some quality non stitchdown footwear like Tricker's. Be careful it can be addictive. I'm going to share something here but keep it quiet. If it gets out they may raise their prices and the wait time will get even longer. The best bang for your buck in the handmade stitchdown boot world is Bordon. They are a tiny operation located in Columbia. They do small batches and only take orders a few times a year. The materials and workmanship are fantastic. The price is modest compared to White's or Nick's.

I agree, Bordon Columbia makes a fantastic boot. I have their Tukano from the May 2023 offering in W&C black oiled latigo. Very nice handmade boots for the money. Be aware though that at present Bordon's production time is only slightly shorter than Nicks. My Tukanos took 188 days. My Nicks/Parkhurst collaboration has not yet arrived, and was ordered 212 days ago. My Bordon order from the Save the Oceans campaign is still in work at 131 days from ordering.

Tony we must have the same taste in boots. I ordered a pair of Oceans as well. My best guess is that they will ship some time in mid January or a bit later. I'm still waiting on a pair of White's Cutters that I ordered from Baker's back in June. Unless things have changed in the last few months even Nick's "Quick Ship" is not exactly quick. Something like 3.5 months from the time the order is placed. @@tony_r_pierce

Been lurking around on your channel for close to a decade now, was a pleasant surprise to see this review. I've been wearing pnw boots since my early teens, and for a hillbilly washington kid they were my pride and joy. The men that braved the brutal terrain and incredible work loads that made legend chose these boots because they could take it, to me they are a great symbol of our American heritage. Enjoy, great job on the review as usual. maybe I'll see ya round

If you can get in touch with them I’m sure they’d hook you up with a faster lead time. They let tons of people jump the line. I’m the sorry sap sitting at the end waiting 9 months and counting for my loggers. To be fair I think it’s a leather issue at this point. I have another pair that came in after 8 months and got 2 from their ready to ship stock. I’d suggest using the ready to ship option if you’re wanting a pair of nicks. If you’re patient, you’ll get a pair you really like way faster. They really are great boots.

Well made video, Brad. I love boot talk and this has addressed my issue of: are high quality boots worth using in construction? After all, that's what they were originally worn for

Exactly. And so many “heritage” boots wouldn’t last a week in my job. These ones should last a decade.

They may not "need" you, though I never heard of these boots till now so they should probably consider giving some kind of deal/recognition. That being said, I have a 6 year old and new born at home while I'm going to school to be an RN. Basically, I don't have the money to get a pair that's so expensive, no matter how many hours I work haha. If I did have the money, I would. The construction alone is second to none it seems. Super jealous! Been a while since I've tuned in, used to watch pipe tobacco reviews religiously! Hope you are well good sir.

Great to have you back! Yep. These things are a cut above. The cost/benefit analysis woks out in their favor, but the initial cost to get in is very high.

Look into Frank's Patriot boot (previous owner of Nick's boots), it's $350 made in the USA, to the same build quality as their other boots, it just has very little customization.

I like the look of a logger heel. It appears to create a natural arch support which I need. I can't justify the expense of Northwest boots, but my next work boots will be logger-style, and I'm looking seriously at the Redwing Logger Max. Anybody out there tried the Logger Max? For those who don't know, lots of better boot companies use Vibram soles on their more expensive boots. Vibram soles absolutely make a difference. I have an expensive set of Wolverine snow boots with Vibram soles. Nebraska gets pretty slippery in the winter, and most winters, I slip on ice at least once. Vibram soles are absolutely more grippy on ice. It's noticeable.
@dcstiger

Here's an option that might make more financial sense for you. Wyatt & Dad Cobbler will convert your heels to a logger or dogger(cuban). They offer a package deal to do a conversion of the heel and install a PNW style leather shank. However I'm sure that Tony at W&D would be happy to convert the heel only if you want. I had them rebuild a pair of Oak Street Trench boots into the PNW style. The guys at Wyatt do fantastic work and have a mail in service.
@jonrobinson8549
@jonrobinson8549 7 месяцев назад
@@dcstiger Yeah, I saw a video where they put logger heels on two pairs of Iron Rangers. They're really good at it. It's an interesting suggestion. Look into Drew's Boots. They're PNW boots from Oregon, but they farm out the sewing to a long-standing boot company in Mexico. They claim the same PNW quality as the others for about half the price. The reviewers praise them.
@dcstiger
@dcstiger 7 месяцев назад
I don't have any personal experience with Drew's. Hard to tell if it's hype or not. If you hit the 20% sale that White's and Baker's have a few times a year you could pick up a pair of Cutter C350 or Cruiser C350 for about $100 more than the Drew's logger series. @@jonrobinson8549
@dcstiger
@dcstiger 7 месяцев назад
I should probably mention Bordon Boots again. They are in the same price range as Drew's and offer a logger heel option. Plus a really nice built-up leather shank. They are built like tanks and the stichdown workmanship is very high quality. The only downside is the wait time. Around 5 months from when the order is placed. @@jonrobinson8549

Heck I'm a security guard (so not swimming in cash) but I ponied up and ordered a pair of Nick's Tactical; I've worn Worx, Red Wing and Danner and the only issue with the Red Wing (forgot the model) was I could never get a high shine on them and were heavy as sin. The Worx and Danners were comfortable but were cemented construction (so not recraftable) and were a combination of leather and nylon, which I don't like. The wait wasn't fun at six months, but getting the exact boot for the money spent that will most likely outlast me is a bonus (as well as being the coolest kid on the block with the best boots because everyone else is wearing cheap ass Galls or Lugz). I don't have anything with a logger heel but it does give it a certain refined look, but Nick's are damn tanks anyway.

Any chance on doing a vid on how you maintain your boots? Do you use saddle soap and mink oil? If so how often and even how you go about applying it all would be interesting. Got a pair of RedWings and always curious if there was a better way of keeping them well maintained. (Looks like I should have just finished the vid before posting) haha
