Really nice video. Very down to earth with no BS or gimmicks or patronizing tone. Also you are one of the few US hams who are experimenting.....

My apologies to KF4DCY. I accidentally deleted his comment instead of clicking the correct button to reply. He asked if the VFO hopping behavior was due to a bad VFO. The answer is that it was designed to do that. I don't like that behavior, so I have an idea to keep it from doing that. I'll put up a short video if the idea works. 73, and again, sorry about deleting your comment. I wish RU-vid gave me an "undelete" button!

Excellent Vid. I'm a tech and looking to get up to the next level and was thinking about this radio. You have answered a lot of my questions over the last few videos on the topic but this one answered a lot of my BIG questions. I might shy away, but then I also don't back down from a challenge. I'm looking to build an inexpensive rig for camping and SOTA work so I thought this might be the one. Thank you for the great series on this intriguing little radio.

Thanks Dave. Hi again. I am off to the local parts shop for small momentary push buttons. I too get frustrated with the fast tune up or down at either end of the tuning pot. I think i'll add the 2 resistors you suggested to either side the tuning pot and, I think i'll need a momentary button for up freq and one for down. Violet to yellow and violet to green. Right? I believe that's how the Raduino works. Also planning to change to a 3 or 10 turn tuning pot (on order) I had one, but burned it out by nor realizing that the wiper wasn't the center tab on a Bourns control. I'm all set, with my ptt switch mounted on my Sharpie pen mic holder and a nice blue foam windscreen. My 5ah AGM battery is mounted inside my case and a charging port on the back panel. Not sure how to, or if you want photos. If you do, just ask. 3.other club members are in various stages of Bitx40 fever. Our club, WA1NPO.org. Take a look at our motley crew. Great guys and gals. 73 Mike WA1MAD

I'm seriously considering this device.I'm legally blind but have been my whole life and have built many kits. I already have a 40 meter qrp radio (FT-817ND) but this is hard to resist. I thing I'll probably go the speaker/mic route since those can be picked up dirt cheap now. Thanks for the fine videos Dave. 73

Mr. Casler, What are your thoughts about an inline amplifier off of this QRP transceiver? I have not yet dabbled with HF despite having a General class license now for about two years. I would appreciate any insight you might have on this.
@davecasler
@davecasler 7 лет назад
There are some amps available that will convert a QRP rig into a 100 watt rig. However, most QRP rigs out there (with the exception of the Elecraft and some SDRs) are not really that good in terms of state-of-the art performance. If it's your only approach to SSB, then I guess, but I would recommend getting a purpose-built 100 watt transceiver.

Dave how can I add cw? Thanks
@davecasler
@davecasler 5 лет назад
The BITX-40 doesn't do CW out of the box. Some folks have modified their radios for CW. The newer uBITX has CW as a native mode. Just press the key and it transmits CW. You don't have to change modes or anything like that.

I know you said you'll get to it. But I am turning inside out to hear your input about adjusting R136 to get the expected meter readings. Or was the low power readings intended by design? I never got an definitive answer from Farhan or the bitx 20 group about that.
@davecasler
@davecasler 7 лет назад
Yes, I turned up R136 (mic gain, I think) and it did bring the current up to 1A while transmitting. But that's still not 10 watts output. More like 5.
@K7AGE
@K7AGE 7 лет назад
I found I needed to run the BITX from 13.6 volts or so to get 7-8 watts out. With 12 V I was getting about 4-5 watts.

Hey Dave, if you modify the arduino code to put the other decimal in the frequency, will you please post the modifications to the code? I would like to make that change too, but I am having trouble figuring out where to make the change in the code. I will keep studying the code in the mean time.

I will. It'll be awhile, though, as I have several other videos to do before that. 73, Dave

I'm curious about this little rig... I've been wondering if it would make any kind of reasonable platform for JT65 or possibly even PSK. In some ways, it seems silly to use a $1,000 computer to drive a $60 radio, but in others I think it'd be neat just o say I'd done it... Maybe a Raspberry Pi, a BITX-40, and a copy of WSJT-X for Raspian? What do you think?
@davecasler
@davecasler 7 лет назад
The BITX-40 as it presently stands is a lower-sideband transceiver. Digital modes are done with upper sideband. There have been mods suggested on the forum to get it to do USB. But the big problem with a stand-alone solution for digital modes is that there needs to be a sound card in there somewhere, plus a computer to run the digital software on. Inexpensive soundcards are available for only a few dollars, and a Raspberry Pi should be able to handle the computing, I think. Good luck with your experimenting! 73, Dave

I hadn't even considered that, of course, the transceiver would be LSB for 40m. One of the mods to convert it to USB would be cool--or it looks like there's a BiTX 20m kit too. :) Thanks for all of your great videos and your reply, Dave!

you can do these digital modes with wsjt-x and a raspberry Pi. or other SMC. I have a receive station already and I would just need the bitx40 with SSB mod and I should be set for JT9/65
