Review of GoldenEye (1995) - The Fearless Rejuvenation 

Been waiting for the Brosnan Era reviews! Pierce is also my favourite 007 and "GoldenEye" honestly one of my favourite movies, of all time. It's Bond firing on all cylinders and infinitely rewatchable. Really looking forward to your next few vids as I think TND and TWINE get unjustly slated at times but your reviews are always so fair and respectful. Fantastic work, as always!

Certainly looking forward now to the Brosnan era; he really did help keep this series going past the Cold War.

Thank you so much for this fantastic review of Goldeneye. It was my first 007 film as a kid and holds huge nostalgia, but i think its a fantastic title on its own. It did the best job of modernizing Bond while retaining what people loved about him. Something i sadly didn't think Daniel Craig did for me. Like i love that they acknowledge him as a 'misogynistic Dinosaur' and relic of the cold war but also still allow Pierce Brosnan to be suave ladies man. I feel like Craig era stripped the sexiness from Bond completely and got too serious for me personally. And Tina Turner's excellent theme song for Goldeneye is still my all time favorite. Not to mention the 007 Goldeneye N64 game, which may be even more iconic than the film itself.

I had to toss my Omega Seamaster Professional 300M Diver on before typing up this comment, hahaha. I think that you hit the nail on the head for the film. It's really, really good. It has it's faults, namely the soundtrack and some of the plot contrivances, but I love this movie. Of the two camps that you mentioned, I had the "cool dad" who showed my Roger as my first Bond. I did get around to playing Goldeneye N64 as a kid, but I found the movies first. However, I'm a child of the 1990s, and Brosnan is my Bond too. That N64 remaster from last year was great. I 100%'d it since release, and I forgot how fun a lot of it is. I'm a big Timesplitters fan, so getting to return to the start of that was great. Bunker 2 00 Agent was probably the hardest part of the entire playthrough, maybe tied with the speedrun of Statue. It's my favorite Brosnan film, but his next one is close for me. Goldeneye is my #2 film, right behind Casino Royale. My top #5 has 3 more movies that you've yet to cover on the channel, so I'll be looking forward to that. Martin Campbell mentioned in a watch party on IGN's RU-vid channel with Famke Janssen that the music for the tank chase was basically done over a weekend. He also wasn't a fan of the music in the film in general.

The GoldenEye trailer theme from Parodi Fair is amazing. The excitement it helped build for the movie cannot be overstated.

Finally you've reached the bond of my childhood. GoldenEye is my favorite bond film and Brosnan will always be the guy I think of when I think of James Bond. Not only does he look the part but he acts it as well. He's like a fusion of Connery and Moore. I really wish he got a 5th film and I remember getting angry when EON fired him because they wanted to the reboot the series. Craig is a good bond too but I'll always prefer Brosnan's approach better.

As an older Bond fan I can remember being very excited for this one to come out and I went to see it a few times in theaters. From Russia with Love has always been my top Bond film but after Goldeneye came out it has remained a very close second. So much so that I also choose to show this one to anyone new to the franchise as I feel it has the best of everything that makes a great Bond movie.

This is actually my favorite Bond movie.

Still remember seeing this on opening weekend in 1995 with my sister and dad. I looked at my dad at the end and all I said was "That's more like it". Bond was back.

This was the first Bond film I saw in full, and I still think it's great. Tonally and aesthetically, it's unique from the entire series. Brosnan is just great as Bond from the very off, and the rest of the cast is pretty good too. The film's greatest weakness is it's unconventional score, but even that has its moments.

This was awesome experience back in the day as the first Bond movie I saw at theatre and I have to say this is my favourite Bond film. The gunbarrell still sends huge chills down my spine, awesome theme and new look.

The bit about the Opening Titles and how Binder was starting to lose his touch as time went on is honestly fascinating, especially when you mention that people threatened to ban GoldenEye just because of its title sequence. GoldenEye's titles in general are Kleinman's best (though not my favourite, Casino Royale 2006's wins that spot for me as my favourite movie title sequence period, tied with Superman: The Movie's). And fun fact, shots from the sequence are actually used in the video for Tina Turner's song.

Excellent presentation! Pierce is definitely the best bond, Golden Eye is my favorite bond film. Thank you for covering it.

The intelligence behind the construction of this review is worthy of my envy. You didn't just discern and explain. Brosnan isn't my favorite Bond, but this review is a standout of the constructed argument. I'm rather verklempt. I didn't always agree with your assertions (like about the quality of the villains) but so what? I know what *I* think, but enjoy how you make your assertions on what *you* think so much more. Yeah. By the time you finished your justifications, I had to concede your reasons were solid. Mine could stand a re-evaluation after I rewatch this film. Truth be told, I love Ouromov's swigging at his flask and constant double takes. Robbie Coltrane can, I confess, do no wrong. Sean Bean is just a treasure. And yes, Alan Cumming is a scene stealing, wonderful pleasure to behold. He knew what he was doing, like good actors do. Samantha Bond is a lovely actress. When I saw her in "The Sarah Jane Adventures" as a villain, I was very happy. I loved her as Moneypenny. Dame Judi Dench is always a plus. Nothing I say about her will change that in any direction. Full stop. Thank you for what you identified concerning Serra's score and Maurice Binder's opening credits. I owe you a dinner for nailing it. I owe you a freaking second one for the coincidence list. Finally, you taught me new things outside a &*%$ ton of reviews out there. Once again, you didn't waste my time. You made this worth every minute. Humbly, I thank you.

Another excellent review, GoldenEye remains my second favourite Bond film after The Spy Who Loved Me. Brosnan made such a spectacular entrance as James Bond, it's a shame that the remainder of the Brosnan films were so disappointing, it is why he is my least favourite Bond.

Brosnan is also who I think of when someone mentions Bond and that is your fault.

I saw this one in theatres twice. Enjoyed it both times, though I thought they upped the violence level 10 times over LICENSE TO KILL. I think I only ever played the soundtrack CD once... to me, it was just boring. But Tina Turner's theme song I rank as ONE OF THE BEST-EVER! Incredibly, Derek Meddings' work was SO good... I did not realize he'd worked on the film at all until the 2nd time I saw it on a big screen. Honestly-- I had NO IDEA some of what I was seeing were minatures at all! (Just like that one clever shot in FOR YOUR EYES ONLY.) What a way to go out. It was so cool they brought back the DB5. My best friend and I used to "cast" actors in our head as we both read each new John Gardner novel, and believe it or not, we both though Joe Don Baker would have been perfect for the CIA guy in "Icebreaker" in 1983. To see him play 2 different roles in the films, and the 2nd one being a CIA agent, was mind-blowing. I wish he was in the stories more. Somehow, this was the last Bond film I ever got on VHS. Been meaning to get more, but now, by the time I do, they'll all be Blu-Rays instead... which will be EVEN BETTER. (I don't have a single Bond film in my collection IN WIDESCREEN. Can you imagine?)

27:00 Number 3 on the list for me. Only behind Skyfall and Licence to Kill. Its a great Bond movie and yes if you had to choose one movie to show a new audience to get them into Bond, then go for GoldenEye.

Wait why would Indiana Jones be pointless in Raiders? If he wasn't there after the Nazis opened the arc, it would have gotten retrieved by them. The Allies would not have known where it was, while the Nazis did.

No surprise that GoldenEye ranks highly with nearly every Bond fan (except maybe 80-year-old stalwarts who recognise no Bond but Connery). It is 6th on my list, and is my SECOND favourite Brosnan, and there's almost no praise in your review with which I disagree. I'm a little older than you, I perceive, and when Brosnan took over the role millions of us said "Yes, we expected this, and about time!" and he did not let us down. Much in this film is refreshing in comparison to the 1980s Bond films, not excluding the quality of photography and effects and production design (Peter Lamont improving with every film). The only beat that fails is the music, although the title song is okay (14th on my ranking). This is the first Bond film of the internet era, so on the internet of the time (eg Usenet groups) I was active and the discussion and praise of GoldenEye was wide and varied, but as I recall, overwhelmingly positive. Bond was back.

Great review. Certainly Goldeneye was a phenomenon. I know you mentioned it on the best theme songs post about the belter of tune from Tina Turner. That it was not integrated into the soundtrack proper was a disappointment. The Serra soundtrack is not even one of his best though it has some charms. Definitely the N64 game helped in many aspects and a lot of people who were playing the game later became fans of the series. I had already been watching Bond for over 10 years at this point. I had mixed feelings about the movie at the time liking 006 and Zenia and some action but still finding too many Brits and Western Euro actors putting on hammy Russian accents. Minnie Driver was the worst. Cummings too played too cartoonish for me. Dench was not quite as good as she would get in later movies. Finally I found some of the model work and the CGI a bit naff. Earlier much preferred TND and pre DAD Goldeneye was near the bottom for me. I have re examined the entire Brosnan era and while it is still not my favorite GE has risen in my opinion and now I prefer it to TND but still below TWINE.

as a kid, I definitely thought the 90s Bond title sequences looked cool as an adult, I think the Maurice Binder sequences are cooler despite the sameyness, and "modernizing" Bond titles with new technology looks tacky

22:45 other than the brilliant GoldenEye Overture music from the pre-title sequences, I didnt like anything from his score. He nearly borrowed most of his work from Leon The Professional and what the hell was the Experience of Love at the end 🤦🤦?

I prefer Brosnan to Craig even though his films have dated badly. This also has one of the worst scores in the series. More uneven then never say never.
