The first of the four games in the .hack series! I do plan on eventually reviewing all of them because of how impressed I was with this one. Highly addictive and fast-paced combat system and one of the most inventive stories in the RPG genre. Thanks for watching!

I don't know that I've ever played such a flawed experience without regrets. The original .hack//IMOQ tetralogy has some fairly glaring issues, and at times can be a chore to push through. And yet it's such a unique experience. Just combing through the in-game forums and news posts to organically absorb this alternate-future 2010 written back in 2002 is compelling. It was really interesting to experience this world that's reeling from society-altering cyber-terrorism -- mirroring real-life events that had happened only months prior in 2001 -- and view it entirely through the lens of an MMO gamer on his computer, never being able zoom your scope out further than your PC's Desktop. Instead, you experience it through the way characters behave in this virtual world that they use to escape an uncertain reality. It was a tasteful and inventive way to explore a very raw and sensitive modern topic.

the thing I'm learning the most from watching your videos is that we played a lot of the same games growing up. spectacular analysis and great to see some light shed on a seriously underated title

+Chris Sss Thanks man! It is absolutely undervalued and underrated I'm afraid. I'll be doing ff12 next and then returning to some old ps1 titles. Should be fun.

Holy shit dude. So, first of all, fantastic review. You took the words right out of my mouth. especially when it comes to the combat. Also, I don't know if you're playing on an emulator but the footage is insane, I'm currently running through this game and I'm using a much lower end laptop with a low processor. The game looks great in 16:9, much better than the old days on the big ass box tvs.

Good review but you should have a disclaimer that you're not playing on a ps2. I'm currently playing this game on my ps2 and your gameplay resolution looks three times better!

+High Level Reviews I mainly wanted to try it due to my love for Sword Art Online. My sister had a copy that I played as a little kid, but I barely understood it then. I haven't touched the game in years, but now that I'm much older, and really into JRPGS, I'll give it another go. The battle system sounds great from what you described. One question, in what order should I play the games?
@HighLevelReviews

+Dr. Pheel I would start with this one.

The first game is only 10-15hrs (MAX) but the rest of the entrees could easily take you over the 40hr mark. Still to this day, one of my favorite game series ever

Ahh, the .hack games, the offline MMORPG. :P Hehe. I really like the style of the game. I think that the game does a good job of emulating MMO game play. I like little touches like having an email system and game forums that you can check. I'm sure that some people would say that it takes away from the actual game, but I think it brings you in, playing the part of the 'player', so to speak. I'm certain that most people who have played an MMO got a little too obsessed with it, digging through sites and forums when they weren't playing the game itself. ;) Did you ever watch the anime series? I loved .hack//SIGN back in the day. I still have VHS tapes of it. Need to look into getting it on DVD sometime. :P Haha. It's a shame that the last game of the four has become so expensive. And naturally, it's the only game I need to complete my set. :( Some day... Great video! :)

Nice. Subscribed. Look forward to seeing where you go from here. One thing: It's pretty obvious you're using an emulator for the review due to the higher resolution of the textures and some ugly lines and things in 2D elements like menus or text boxes due to the increased internal resolution. Not saying that you did anything wrong with that -- it's quite possible you own the game and used an emulator to record -- but for a more authentic review it might be best to keep all settings native. Just my two cents.

+Tom W Thanks! And yeah, I own the game but used an emulator to record. I was messing with some of the settings but kept getting distorted or odd looking graphics. Any suggestions? Again, thanks.
@HighLevelReviews
@HighLevelReviews 8 лет назад
+High Level Reviews To elaborate, the default settings on the emulator were already set to augment the graphical representation. When I tried to tone it down it ended up severely distorting the screen/text. Should I just do a search for native settings and stick to that?
@tomw7225
@tomw7225 8 лет назад
+High Level Reviews Just go to Config/Video/Plugin Settings. Switching the renderer to Direct3D11(Software) will ensure that the rendering settings are native. Lots of games play better with software mode. On hardware mode, the native settings would be to put a checkmark in "Original PS2 Resolution". Either of those will fix any of those issues. Any other settings are best left untouched if you don't know what you're doing.

I remember this being quite enjoyable and refreshingly original. The concept got boring throughout the sequels though.

All the games are connected so why so they diverge from it's original concept? This is why westerners have been poor writers since the late 90s.

no. sorry I wasn't frustrated with the plot. a little fast paced explanation.
@HighLevelReviews
@HighLevelReviews 7 лет назад
I didn't want to go too in depth as it's a review and not a plot analysis - I figured a truncated explanation would inevitably lead to confusion so I wanted to add some levity with that line and then further clarify after. I was more or less asking the viewer if they were frustrated with the explanation, not with the plot. Sorry if that was confusing.
