Simply put... this is the best oil finish product I have ever used. I have tried others (like boiled linseed oil) and found that the ease of application for this product trumps all others.
I have been doing woodworking for over 15 years and absolutely love this product.
This is my Review of Minwax Antique Oil Finish. I put that "stuff" on everything. Depending on how matte or shiny you want your projects, this product provides a strong finish that is resistant to water, marking, staining and abuse. As a testament to its durability I have used it on my custom 9 foot dining table that was hand crafted from reclaimed hardwoods. It took the abuse from my 3 kids, spills etc. for 2 years before I applied an "extra" coat to bring it back to life. Simple... Easy... Effective.
What have you got to lose? It is not that expensive. Requires no additional varnish or polyurethane. Does not leave drip marks. This really is an amazing product and you will not be disappointed.

Is it food safe?
@TheHappyHootie

To the best of my knowledge… once it is cured it is considered food safe. If you google this topic you will find that most finishes when cured (usually takes 72 hours or more) are considered food safe. I use this product on wood (including my kitchen table) it’s safe enough for my family:-)

I have applied 1 coat, when applying the second I have a very rough surface on a mantle that was super smooth prior to the first coat. Can this be sanded? This is on spruce wood with Minwax oil based stain.

You said you only got a few years on your table with this? I've been researching this and what I've saw and read its seems to be what I'm going with buy a few guys said they get a decade or more out of an application. Maybe your table gets a lot of traffic? I'm restoring a huge table.

Minwax has discontinued antique oil. I’ve been using it for 30 years and now have to find a substitute. Any recommendations?

I'm new at this and can't find much info (it's probably extremely basic) but when you say "buff it off" what exactly do you mean? I'm coming from the car world and when I hear "buff it off" I picture pulling out a electric buffer and going to town on it. Am I using heavy pressure in circular motions until the wood is very smooth? Light pressure along the grain? Should it be sticky and gummy at the end or should it be glass-like smooth?

So… it’s a loose term… no… you don’t need an electric buffer. (Although when I did my 8 foot long table I did think of that). Just let it sit on there for about 10-15 minutes and rub it until it is smooth. It shouldn’t be tacky really. If it is hard to rub off excess you may have just waited too long. Humidity makes a big difference. No worries. Just add a little extra and wait less and rub off. You are basically just wiping off the excess. Wait a day and add another coat. 2 usually does good. 3 if it is high use. More if you like it more glossy. Just play with it. Really is pretty good stuff in my opinion.

You say wait 15 or so minutes before applying a second coat . The container says 24hrs. I am wanting a bit more of a glossy look. Can I apply multiple coats the same day within hours or is finishing this project going to take me days?🤦🏼‍♀️

Currently unavailable on Amazon and having problems locating it elsewhere because all sites I've found say out of stock. Does anyone have a source? One of my favorite products.

Check back in a week. Amazon pulls and switches around products. It has been sold out before and then shows back up. You can find it at Meeks lumber, True Value, and other smaller stores sometimes too.

@@TheHappyHootieThanks - I am in CA and have not been able to find it locally for many years. I have been able to order online in the past but lately hard to find. I will keep checking thanks for the tip.

U don’t say if u sand or steel wool between coats
@TheHappyHootie
@TheHappyHootie 4 месяца назад
I typically just use some higher grit sandpaper. You could use steel wool on it if you were doing multiple coats, I just seem to always have sandpaper around
