I was wondering how their sets are. The price tag they post were prices in my opinion were way too high for painted or lacquered Boxwood pieces which are a plain Jane Staunton pattern. Well now I know. Thank you for the video.
WOW! That is some serious cash. I actually like your lacquered American Staunton set in Gold and Copper over the Purling set. I know that some of Purling's sets can reach as high as $20,000. That is just nuts. For the price you paid on this set. Was it worth it?
I don't think it was worth it because the "weight" and "feel" of the pieces is so important to me. I just recently sold this Purling Bold set. Nothing beats a nice looking set that has a total weight of 55oz or more w/a 4" King. Stick with the pieces and boards from sites like the House of Staunton and stay away from the gimmicks or artsy sets.
I agree with you on that. There is one set I would like to own some day and it is megachess.com 8" Teak set. I am not going to go out of my way to get one but if the funds are right. I would love to get that set. Mainly for playing a game of chess in the park. That set has a heavy price tag but seems like it is more playable than the Purling set.
I'm tempted to get the "Morphy" series from the house of Staunton. Perfect looking pieces, and the weight is perfect, and the king and queen don't have the "flying saucer" base look from being two thin right before the base... That's the one I want!
Hi Sassan! Hope you are well and everything is good at your OC chess & sports club. Would it be possible to edit the description of this video to state that it is our 'Bold Chess Version 1' please? We are now soon about to launch Version 3(!) with Italian Nappa leather felts and other nice improvements. Our Bold Chess version 2 launched over 2 years ago (January 2017) with heavier weights in the pieces, which is one of your key criticisms in the video. It's just that this video is the first that people see when they Google search 'Purling London Bold Chess review'. Thank you so much for your support. We would be happy to give you a discount on the new model coming out. Wishing you many happy chess games and please do keep in touch. All the best, Simon
Hi Simon, yes no problem I'll change the name, I do know however, the search algorithms take a while to "kick in" even after a change it title. This channel, has evolved to cover only my passion for the fish aquarium hobby, so I'm starting a new chess channel soon, I'm going to review the dozen or so high-end sets I have, and discuss other chess topics. Any chance for free samples ;) ?
Sassonic You,re right...Maybe if they had turned the rough side of the leather out and used the smooth side to glue it to the piece it would be better.
My HOS only has leather pads for the kings. I know leather is more expensive but it wears out quicker and it doesn’t feel as nice while you’re playing.
The Dubrovnik model that Fischer used was originally made unweighted, so his hands & fingers got used to those pieces from years of use. So it's not that he 'preferred" unweighted sets, it simply became his pet set that he did analysis with. For 1972 he requested a weighted Jaques set. Nowadays no serious set of men is un-weighted, championship or not. All the Dubrovnik repros from india or slovenia even come weighted.
As always very good revises, THX for ShearingThis set. But let me Say in vídeo the pieces look like they were Made out of plástico, too glossy and what Say you about the squares size? They añorar to he little shorts for the pieces.
Maybe the company owner watched this and did some revisions... I would tend to doubt it though, I don't think being "playable" is the goal with this set, it's more of an art piece, take my word for it, but it's your money if you want to order it as a set you actually play on...
Thank you very much for your review and comments. Yes you are quite right - in January 2017 all our sets were updated with maximum weight, improved all-in-one luxury packaging and to include our new Turn Tokens. This must be an earlier set. I have written a full reply above in the comment chain. Thank you again for your feedback which is very much appreciated. Best regards, Simon Purkis, Founder, Purling London
I am VERY SURE, BOTH armies are --JUST BOXWOOD. then painted and lacquered! Purling will NOT tell what they are. Who is willing to take off that paint to find out---NO ONE- and Purling knows it!
