Good knife for picnic activities (slicing sausage, cutting apple, orange, bread), similar to a Opinel as said. I think the locking system on the Old Bear is a bit more solid. I have one and love it. It is NOT a hunting or bush crafting knife.
@carmenmartinez2882
@carmenmartinez2882 Год назад
Exactly, most videos are using this or the Opinel for bushcrafting and that’s not what these are for. I even saw someone using the big Opinel, I think is #15 as a machete or you could say more like a hatchet trying to demolish palettes, lmao.

Just what I was looking for, and they make a good looking sodbuster too.

Just watched your video, from France :) I have several Opinel over some years. No Old Bear. I was interested about but your video was really well done. Your opinion is clear, complete, full of information. You provide a detailed description for each part of the knife. I saw a lot of RU-vidrs videos about knives tests but yours is in my top3. Good job! And good laugh about David Bowie :D Romain

Nice knife, I like the locking mechanism over Opinel more reliable under wet conditions , I just ordered one of these .today.
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge 3 года назад
Ah yes, it is a bit easier to manipulate the lock mechanism in low grip situations. good point.

Looks way better than the Opinel but I find it expensive for what it is.
@CanadianCuttingEdge

The cost is due to Italian labour, it costs more than Chinese labour

11:20 are you sure its not oil treated? on their website it says its oil treated. did you put BLO on yours? how did it came out? i will be glad if you share since mine just arrived and would like to know if i should do something with the handle. by the way, from how it looks, i will tend to think the same like you. no treatment what so ever.
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge 3 года назад
They may have put a very light sealer on it, but mine behaved as though it was not treated. I used to be a finish carpenter, worked a lot with walnut too, so I have a fair bit of real world experience with it. This is the product I used (mostly because I have lots, and I like the finish it gives): www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/watco/butcher-block-oil-and-finish

@@CanadianCuttingEdge unfortunately, the product you recommended can't be delivered to my address. i saw some people on forums recommending a company called Real Milk Paint which have a food safe product called "half and half" which they say consists of 50% pure tung oil and 50% citrus solvent acting as a thinner. after i checked i found out that it can be delivered to me. do you recommend it? if yes, please mention what application method is best for the longest possible term considering i am in a humid environment ? coats? how many? at what intervals? if you think a bath in that product will give a bitter result, please mention how much time to leave it in. and should i sand the handle before treating it? if yes, what paper number? i have zero knowledge in wood working and finishing as you can see :)

Italy >>> France BTW, there's also carbon blade options (C67-C70 according to Antonini's webpage) Also on their site it is informed that it is oil pre treated wood.

I bought one, large size with Olive wood. Blade arrived bent.....not good. Blade just misses the furl when opened so no stop when pressing down. The 420 stainless is just too soft work any usefulness. All in all......I stick with Opinel.
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge 3 года назад
I hope you returned it. 420 is softer to be sure. The biggest advantage of 420 is that it is pretty much the best budget steel for corrosion resistance. There are better corrosion resistant steels but none that I know of at these prices.

Just received one yesterday. Looks wise it's awesome. Other then that I think it's a piece crap. Almost twice the price of the French opinel, and can't even hold an edge. It came paper ripping sharp from the box😭😭. Hell it was so dull it wouldn't even bite my skin when I blatantly pulled it across my arm. Sharpened it, stropped it. Then it was paper cutting sharp. How do I like it now? Still a piece of crap! Because as soon as you use it once, it will lose its edge and it needs to be resharpend. Consider the fact these guys hand sharpen these things, you would expect things like this to not slip through. Obviously quality control is non existent!
