Appreciated. I think that bigger audience is after less than 10 minute superficial flyovers. And I'm late to the RU-vid review game with it being a much more crowded field than it used to be.

Finally got myself a pair of the G270s. Very impressed so far - as a long-distance mountain walker I like pretty much everything about the shoe. I have a wide and high volume foot so have endless problems finding shoes that fit. I was surprised to find that despite visual appearances the toebox is pretty much exactly the same width as my LonePeak 4.5s and my Nimble Toes Trails. So plenty space for comfort, but the midfoot lockdown is exceptional for steep side-slopes and descents. I find the LonePeak unpleasantly sloppy. The grip on the sole is more than comparable to the VJ MaxX, which is often cited as the gold standard. Wear so far has been virtually zero despite quite a few miles over gnarly terrain. The hype around the graphene materials science seems justified. The midsole works well too. Enough protection for long-distance walking, but still enough ground-feel to satisfy people like me who like minimal shoes. On nasty ground this feels the most stable shoe I've ever used, despite the stack height being greater than some. I have a weak ankle so this is very reassuring. And I enjoy the hint of bounce - makes me feel younger than my years! If the mid-sole lasts as advertised, it's close to ideal for my use-case. Construction seems much more reassuring than the LonePeaks, with better materials and overlay rands at most of the points where my Altras tend to blow out. Yet they still drain acceptably well. I'm hoping to get significantly better wear than I've experienced over the years with LonePeaks. TL/DR - the best protective zero drop shoe I've ever used - and by some distance. I think I've found my ideal thru-hiking shoe at last, and I hope they don't muck about with it too much - this is a classic. I now live about 10 minutes from the Inov8 headquarters in the Lakes. Hoping to find some way to develop a relationship with those guys as they are an interesting and innovative bunch...

Out of all the trail shoe reviews I've seen for all the comparisons plus the G270, you've answered all the questions and addressed the same concerns I've asked coming back into trail running. I was a heavier guy weighing at 225, now at 200, getting down to 185. I've tried the Salomon Sense Pro 4, topo terraventure, hoka speedgoat 4, Altra lonepeak 4.5, and settled for the G270. I feel the same about zero drops and it's a love/hate relationship with this one. I didn't hurt initially like I did with the lonepeak in my lower legs but I also didn't feel as lively as in the speedgoat but doable. So far I've taken them to the technical trails in VA/MD and loved them there. Coming over to CA where it's mainly uphill sand, loose small sharp rocks, or snowcapped trails, my legs have felt extra tired trying to gain momentum and stability with the smaller lugs. (loved your midstance explanation) I do agree on all the good points on the shoe but I need an alternative and build my rotation as I have with my road shoes. Seems like VJ MAX, Wildcross or Mad River Tr2( possibly the Canyon also) will be the next shoes.

Always appreciate the care you take with everything you do. The comparisons of other models and terrain specific talk is great. As a longtime fan of the brand, and having just got my hands on a NOS pair of these, I appreciate the familiar locked down midfoot combined with a little more room for splay and swelling in the toebox. Took a few miles to soften up underfoot but after that it's the tactile and responsive ride I've come to expect from the variety of models I've liked from them in the past, now all discontinued, with the added benefit of a bit more room up front without having to got to a big clog like the Lone Peak(now relegated to trail maintenance).

Great review! The G270 is a great shoe for wide feet and zero drop, I use it for ultras and as my day shoe. The only problem I have with it is in wet muddy technical trails where you might as well have banana skins on your feet. This is the best shoe I ever had but I'm still looking for a zero drop wide lightweight shoe with good grip in wet mud...

Great review of the shoe there. Probably the best assessment of the qualities and great to have comparisons to other models. I have used a variety of the Inov8 line up and agree that the 'precision fit' models such as the Xtalon 212 are far too narrow and short. Really enjoyed the Xtalon 200 which had standard fit. Definitely going to pick up a pair of these in the UK. 👍

Thanks for the review - really comfortable midsole. The zero drop doesn’t work for me beyond marathon distance. Upper is stiff and the short tongue can bite. Can’t wait to get this new midsole material into a retooled G 285 - now that would be an ultra shoe!
@TrailsCollective
@TrailsCollective 3 года назад
For sure a trade-off on the upper. Material isn't as plush bit it also makes less for water to absorb into. I also tested the VJ Maxx recently and comparably the G270 feels thin and pliable. I also have a pair of Mad River 2's on my feet right now. Really soft / traditional, but I carry half the Creek with me each crossing. I think higher insteps get pinched at the tongue line. My midfoot is a bit collapsed so it doesn't prove to be an issue for me, bit I get that it does for some others. 285 weight point in their lineup I would think should work for most people, but it might not be as sexy and thus catch as much momentum. Thanks for weighing in Troy!

Trails Collective thanks! I bought the VJ Maxx after watching your review - which led me to the Xero 5 - the Maxx platform with metal studs. Used them on the icy trails here in the Foothills west of Denver just this morning and highly recommend. Have a 15-mile race next week on rugged Navajo Mountain in UT and may use the G 270s for that - combo of rocky technical canyons and pine subalpine with sand. My next 100-miler is in Louisiana in early December on a mix of buffed trails, wood planks, asphalt and piney woods with some lighter technical. Will likely use the Brooks Catamount or the Hoka EVO Speedgoat. Keep those reviews coming! Thank you again.

@@TrailrunnerTroy whoa, quite the variation. Nice work still pulling the mix off in '20. A friend also just got the Xero's. I've not yet checked them out, they weren't even on my radar til this week, but will. Catamount feels great and runs fast, just more a crossover versus technically too capable. I'm about to hit the road headed for a 50k in Maryland. Lugs will be overkill, but gonna opt for the WildCross. Good luck and have fun this weekend!

My experience with the VJ was that the outsole grip was stellar, but the upper ripped along the junction with the sole with no warning and well before its time.
@TrailsCollective
@TrailsCollective 3 года назад
Hmmm...I wonder if you got a defective pair or whether there's just not enough out there yet to really uncover weak spots? Or whether something about your foot and mechanic finds a weak point? I used a friend who typically blows out the forfoot uppers of shoes really quickly as my VJ guinea pig. He's gotten more miles out of the MaxX upper than any other model we've tried over the years. But he's also a case of one and it sounds like you tore the seam vs the material itself? Thanks for the feedback.

Great review! Good sense of humor makes it more fun to watch! I’m trying to decide on a shoe at the moment, I’m a bigger guy 250lbs and don’t trail run but do a few 2-3 hr hikes here and there, but mostly play disc golf about 3 times per week and 2-4hrs each time, there’s a lot of side hilling, rock scrambling, log jumping etc to get to your disc. I got a used set of lone peak 4 rsm’s and have loved how they make me feel so light on my feet and they’re like wearing slippers, sometimes I just bounce from rock to rock or down short steep sections, quicker than my size should be able to! feels great, but sidehilling the outer edge of my foot compresses the soft midsole so much that it almost touches the ground and feels like I’m going to roll my ankle, makes it quite uncomfortable on my feet and my ankles hurt a bit afterwards, so need a summer shoe similar to them with a bit more support, was thinking either Saucony Xodus 10/ or Mad river tr2, Altra timp3, altra Olympus4, timp and Olympus may be too squishy again and not enough side support but not sure, heard the Xodus is great everywhere, but so is the 270! And lighter and more nimble, but would it be comfortable for longer days, as the Xodus’s higher stack should be. In tournaments I can be in the shoes for 12-18hrs. Thoughts? Sorry about the long write up!

Hey Trails Collective. Would you consider a video overview on toe box shapes among the trainer brands? What shoes offer wide fits etc. I know Altra have traditionally had a wide toe box although I have heard they recently have made the Escalante with a narrower fit. Basically, if you could give the viewer an overview of brands and toe boxes (with your brilliant analysis and insight) I know it would be invaluable when choosing a shoe.
@TrailsCollective
@TrailsCollective 3 года назад
Yup, I can do that. Might be a little bit...I'm pretty consumed right now in a deep dive into Northeastern US Trail Race data for upcoming articles, but I'll get there. Until then:...in general Altra and Topo across their models. As you mention though, the Escalante, Provision, and Rivera are a bit shallower (it's more the shallowness that makes them snugger as opposed to straight width dimension). Altra fans a touch wider to the medial side of the big toe whereas Topo tapers less quickly and is a bit boxier over the 2nd / 3rd toes. Saucony uses a wider last (midfoot and toebox) with the Mad River (historically the Nomad and Koa in that lineage). Niche brand Xero is also a bit boxier, similar to the G270. Nike Kiger / Wildhorse models also created with wider toebox, but, similar to some Altra's above, a bit shallower in dimension. I'm also hoping to create an online portal of sorts which will take you through a decision tree of shoe properties to get you to a good fit. One of the pieces is taking measurements of shoe width, etc... Will take me a while to get that live though.

Unfortunately, I don’t get a Run a Trail dispatch as I would like him love it triple is more flexible than a lot of my barefoot shoes of the only thing with the tongue I wish it was a little bit longer I think or longer when I am doing like the lace lockers, a little wider shoe of it, it’s a little short so I’m out for a little longer but I heard the new version came out. Nice thorough review man, thanks. I'm keen to try out the G270's but wondered how the toe-box room/width compares to some of the Altra models? I've run in the Superior 4's and King MT 2 which fit great and forefoot room is perfect, would you say the Inov-8's match up in your opinion? or are they just wide for an Inov-8 - rather than Altra wide - if that makes sense :)?
@TrailsCollective
@TrailsCollective 3 года назад
Wide for Inov8. A bit more depth in the toebox than the Superior (I haven't worn the King Mtn since V1... We carried it, but the durability was not there even into v2 so we phased it back out), but Altra fans out a bit broader over the 5th met / outside of the foot. Stickier and more durable outsole in the Inov8, a bit firmer underfoot (though Superior's low stack height makes it a bit firmer and responsive than the midsole foam would feel otherwise), and a bit more durable upper.

@@TrailsCollective Thanks for the reply, much appreciated! That's kinda confirmed what I thought might be the case - they looked a little more tapered on the pinky-toe side which I think might cause a problem for me over time. Got too used to that Altra shape now, it's hard to go back! For what it's worth I found the King MT 2 to be pretty durable and comfortable ride so far - way better that the 1 & 1.5's anyway. Although that's just based on my experience in UK winters, mud and slop rather than on any abrasive mountain trails.

I know this is kind of a random scenario but I’d love your advice. I’ve been seeking a trail running shoe that can replace my wading boots. I do a lot of back country fly fishing and carrying heavy wading boots and my trail runners or hiking the distances I do in wading boots is a pain. My current outsoles on my wading boots are vibram Idro grip and work decent on wet rocks but not so great on slick granite (especially if there is any slimy growth on them). Have you done many River crossings in these? Any very slick wet surfaces? I’d love to hear your thoughts and that review was AWESOME!
@TrailsCollective
@TrailsCollective 3 года назад
Frank, thanks for checking it out and reaching out. So you'll be ditching the wading boots altogether, and wearing the runners in the river? I'm assuming there's no waterproof leg sleeve tight enough where waterproof uppers on the shoes will be at all useful? I think the Graphene is a bit tackier than the Vibram but I can't say they were hugely / that significantly different. Part of the gain comes from the micro texture or nubs on the G270 lugs, and versus some of the Vibram that ice used which has smooth lugs. I think lugs with texture does make a difference, in addition to the compound itself. A lot of our Creek crossings are shale or bluestone with the only friction coming from fractures or fossil inlays. And our logs or bridges often have a algael film, so I hear you. Finding anything that grabs without studs seems an elusive holy grail. I'm two runs into testing a model which I didn't have any high expectations for. A pair of Asics FujiTrabucco Lytes. The first run was a couple days ago after a big snow dump, so that run was road with packed snow / ice / slush. In the closing miles of the 10 miles they were getting uncomfortable underfoot, not a good crossover for pavement. The outsole rubber sounds and feels plasticky on hardpack. It feels and sounds cheap and ill considered. It rained all day yesterday and through the night, melting off the snow leaving high creek water and soft ground. My expectations weren't high but I was excited to see what they felt like she how they performed on trail. I was actually really surprised. The outsole rubber seemed to grip better than any shoe I've tried, noticeably better on the Creek / wet stone crossings. It'll take a few more runs to be sure, and I'll wanna take Graphene, Vibram, and ContaGrip, maybe even VJ's Butyl out to a crossing on the same day to compare them head to head. I don't know that it would be my top choice as a versatile shoe, or must comfortable for long trail efforts. But it could be for wet mid distance runs with crossings. And if it's truly stickier head to head, I'm actually gonna be kinda blown away as I'd mentally written off the brand long ago. Or, maybe finding one with top fit / comfort and adding hex head sheet metal screws? Or, if you can find a pair pre-studded?

Thanks for the honest and very thorough review. I have been running in Salomons mostly: Slab Sense Ultra from 2017, Sonic 1 and 2 for light trails, and Sense 7 SG. I am looking for something narrow that would fit between the Sense Ultra and the Sense 7 SG. My feet are super narrow and I always replace the shoe insole with my orthopedic insoles. I am tempted to order the G270 in size 10.5 while I wear 10.0 in Salomons, hoping that I could ADD my orthopedic insoles UNDER the Inov-8 insoles. Does this sound like a crazy plan to you? Should I stick with Salomon and get the Sense Pro 4 or the new Ultra 3? My longest runs are 10 miles on simple hard trails, no rocks. I just want to save my knees to keep running until I am 70!
@TrailsCollective
@TrailsCollective 3 года назад
I wouldn't go with the G270. It's on their 5 Fit Scale so it has a wider fit and toebox. Unless you think your custom insert can fill that volume. The Sense 4 Pro is also a bit wider in the toebox than prior pro's, and is a model discontinuing in '21. Based on you running hard non technical trails I might say the Sense Ride unless you've tried and not preferred them. I think it's smoother than the Ultra and in that sense easier on the joints and connective tissue. Or maybe the Brooks Catamount?
