I contacted Manly Canada recently and they are no longer associated with Manly Bulgaria. Manly Canada will become "Maker Blades". You can find out a very tiny bit about it if you go to the Manly Canada website, they have not yet taken it down. If you email me I could send you some sample packets of VC-3 via the mail. I would only ask for the postage to be covered, maybe $3 to $5 depending on where in Canada you are. my email canadiancuttingedge AT gmail.com

Bought the Comrade while it was on discount for 30eur here, the blade is in 1.2379 steel (german D2). It's a very solid slipjoint knife indeed ! My only concern for the moment is the non reversible clip, but i can deal with it. For the moment i have no issue with the pivot screw, hope it will stay like that. Seems that Manly is not producing their knives anymore, someone told me they are under the Böker brand now.

They shut down Manly Canada a couple of years ago, not long after I made this video, and then slowly all their sites started shutting down, it's too badk I like their stuff.

Hey, Jake! I've had quite a few Comrades and other Manly knives and if I might say so, the backspring with your model seems waaaay to soft. It's usually way stronger. And let me add: they come shaving sharp from the factory.
@CanadianCuttingEdge

So, you are saying mine is a bit of a lemon?
@Andi1878
@Andi1878 5 лет назад
@@CanadianCuttingEdge I'd say so, yes! I have had at least a dozen knives by Manly and NONE had such a soft backspring or wouldn't shave... I have just sold three models (Peak in D2, Comrade in D2 and Wasp in S90V) on my channel. They were flawless.

154cm is a premium steel, on lower end of premium, yes, but non the less. I use daily 1085/1095 carbon steel to s35vn and sometimes super steel grade steel like m390, elmax ect. I love 154cm type for edc use. We have become spoiled.
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge 3 года назад
We have indeed. For very few things do we really need anything better than 440C which was first made almost 80 years ago. but we like *NEW* stuff so much that it will always be a selling point for the higher end knives.

Love the knife ans your shop mat if thats what it is. You should sell some. I have never bought a shop mat but if you made one like thst and a big one I would definitely be interested. Hey maybe its another way to grow your channel. That manly site is down at the moment I think. Cpm 154 is one of my favourite general use steels. I usually don't need super steels just steels that work well. Ya I would take a tube of that drive grip just a couple of weeks ago or more I thought of it. I was at a friends house taking apart a Nintendo controller of all things that he had already stripped a rusty screw in a long shallow hole and needless to say nothing would hardly fit in that he owned and I couldnt use your rubber band trick, but I actually was like dang I wish I had that cam out now lol. I ended up getting it with the wrong driver anyhow.

I have the Comrade's little brother, the Wasp, which is a legal carry here in the UK. Great knife, S90V for around the £50 mark. I'm not that keen on the 3-stop opening, but it might save me cutting myself one day I suppose. The only thing I really don't care for is the name Manly. I mean, really, how naff. Maybe it sounds OK in the Bulgarian equivalent, but in English you might as well go the whole hog and call it Big Dick or something. I'd happily buy the Comrade too, were it not for our asinine knife laws which render the blade length unacceptable.

@@CanadianCuttingEdge trust me, the UK government are constantly looking to ban things just for the sake of it. They are looking to ban bumpstocks, despite banning semi-auto rifles 30 years ago!🤔😆
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge 5 лет назад
@@spudgunn8695 Yes, I am aware. I keep on top of what is going on in the mother country - LOL It comes from the faulty idea that if you can control the stuff people have then you can control what they do or have done to them. The problem is that there will always be ways for people to hurt themselves and worse - there will always be ways people can harm others. Every country tries to keep its people safe, and that is a good goal. It is the execution of that goal that often gets outrageous. An American example is that the candy/toy called Kinder Surprise was banned in USA for 40 years (2017 they began allowing it back apparently), but we can have it here in Canada. The "problem" was that it is targeted to little children and there are parts in there that a child could choke on. If every toy that has parts that could come off and kids could choke on were banned then the stores would have much less than half the selection of toys than they have right now... We humans always seem to move our laws toward the insane. There comes a point where you can't protect people from themselves and trying to is fruitless and only steals freedom from the majority. All governments do it, some focus on areas other than others and some do it to a degree more than others. I have often said in my life that there is no such thing as common sense, for if it existed it would be common, and the stuff we think is common sense really is missing especially from the brains of politicians. It seems something dies in the brain of everyone that gets elected...
@spudgunn8695
@spudgunn8695 5 лет назад
@@CanadianCuttingEdge let's face it, Jake, Douglas Adams had it right. Anyone who wanted to be President of the Universe, was automatically banned from standing for the post.. I mean look at when no majority government was elected in Belgium a few years back. They hand no Government for over 500 days, there were no riots, and their economy out grew Germany's! If people want to be politicians, they should be banned from being one, as they are bound to be corrupt gits.

This is more money than a Victorinox farmer. It's nice and all but....
@ArikGST
@ArikGST 5 лет назад
The Manly Comrade is gonna have about 8 times the edge retention of a Victorinox if you get the CPM154 Edition, meaning it has a much longer lifespan as you don`t have to sharpen it as often. If you don`t care about lifespan and more about initial purchase cost, than yeah, the Victorinox is cheaper.
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge 5 лет назад
We each make our own choices for what is right for our specific cases. I do reviews based only on what that specific knife is and does and I allow each viewer to make their own comparisons with other knives for themselves. You make the choice that is rigth for you. If the price is the main point to consider then there most certainly are a LOT of "better" choices. German Survivalist makes a very good point, the steel on a Victorinox is quite a bit inferior to CPM154.
@berniem.6965
@berniem.6965 4 года назад
Talking German prices, the D2 version is roughly double the price of a Victorinox Sentinel. For a knife with a lot of manual work that's a very good price. The only manual work on Victorinox knives is putting them together. Everything else is done with machines. Furthermore, Victorinox knives are mass produced while manly is a rather small company. Compared to other brands, the manly knives are usually cheaper and run somewhere between US / European and Chinese knives. That's very fair considering they use a lot of manual work and have to pay fair wages. Which is where Bulgaria comes into play. For a European country, work is rather cheap there. On top of the very reasonable prices, manly's heat treatment is very good. It's very impressive what properties they get out of their steels. And they know that and take pride of it. That's why they grind their knives so extremely thib behind the edge and then still apply a 30° edge. And guess what, that 'fragile' edge holds up longer than most competitors who have thicker dimensions and 40° edges. That's how good manly's heat treatment is. On top of that they offer most knives in a number of steel options and the extra cost for the better steel is very fair compared to their competition. A high quality pocket knife with S90V steel and G10 scales for under 100€? Show me something similar from any other brand that's not Made in China.
