Thanks for supporting me on Patreon: www.patreon.com/user?u=845171 One of my all-time favorites, it's time to revisit this watch here for the first time since 2011! I go in depth into the '57 Railmaster and the modern re-issue, considering their respective innovations and relevance, and I also consider the future of this historic model in the Omega brand!
Thanks for watching, please subscribe! Thumbs up if you found this video interesting. Cheers!

...
This was featured in the Sunday Times back in 2009, written by Jeremy Clarkson.
"I suppose that in the days when your fishmonger knew your name and what sort of cod you liked on a Friday, "brand loyalty" made sense. Now we live in a world of supermarkets and corporations, it is the most ridiculous thing on all of God's green earth. No matter how many loyalty cards you have in your wallet.
That said, I am the worst offender. Even though I know Virgin is the best airline, I always try to fly BA. Even though I know HSBC is in fairly good shape, I bank at Barclays. Even though I know the new style of Levi's reveals my butt crack when I bend over, I would still never buy a pair of Wranglers.
And this brings me neatly onto the question of watches. For some time now I've been on the hunt for a new one but the choice is tricky. I couldn't have a Breitling because I don't own an Audi. I couldn't have a Calvin Klein because they are pants, I couldn't have a Gucci because I'm not a footballist's wife, I couldn't have a TW Steel because my wrist isn't big enough to sport something that can be seen from space, I couldn't have a Tissot because I'm not eight and the only thing in the world worse than a fake Rolex is a real one.
Have you noticed something odd about Rolexes? Especially the modern ones that wind automatically when you move your wrist about? A great many owners wear them on their right hand. I jump to no conclusions here but you can feel free.
Mostly, though, I cannot wear any of these watches because I am an Omega man. I have worn a Seamaster for years, not because James Bond has one and not because Neil Armstrong wore something by the same maker on the moon but because on the day I went away to school my parents gave me a Genéve Dynamic.
The trouble is that for the past few years Omega has been the Pillsbury dough of Swiss watches. The Terry and June. Omegas were dreary. They were boring to behold. They were Vectras in a world of Ferraris and Lamborghinis. The De Ville Prestige, for example, was plainly designed by someone who had a black-and-white telly.
This filled me with despair. I wanted a watch. For the same reasons that I bank at Barclays and wear Levi's, it had to be an Omega, and it just wasn't coming up with the goods. It was like Leeds United. Once the home of Peter Lorimer and Gary Sprake but now an also-ran bunch of unimaginative clod-hopping no-hopers.
And then one day, in Hong Kong, I saw it. A new Omega. It's called the Railmaster and it is a thing of unparalleled beauty. There is no button that owners think will call for help if they find themselves in a crashing helicopter on Kilimanjaro, it is not waterproof to 8,000 metres, there is no stopwatch, there is no swivelling bezel to tell you how much air you have left in your tanks and you even have to wind it up every morning or it will stop. Plainly this is a watch for the sedentary soul. The man with no hang glider or mini sub in his garage. I bought it in an instant."

Great review. This watch, in my opinion, is so much more authentic looking than the new Railmasters with their faux patina. I know it is "each to their own" when considering the aesthetics of watches but the fake patina doesn't do it for me. Looking to acquire a Railmaster from the 2003 -2009 era sometime soon - hopefully.

2023, and this is still the most beautiful Railmaster of them all. The limited anniversary edition *could* have been better looking, but its fauxtina places it imho under this one.

Bought and sold two 39mm explorers. Nice watches but no good on a strap. Bought this model a few weeks ago and love it. It is the keeper I have been looking for these last 5 years. It my favourite watch and I think it always will be. It is so comfortable on the wrist and goes well with loads of straps and NATOs as well.

. . . Enjoyable review. That Omega ad photo of the three watches was fantastic.... how two of the three pictured moved beyond this watch's heritage in certain circles of preferred marketability and daily wear is fascinating. Timeless , purposeful design, well executed and reliable has a place in daily life. Thanks for the unique efforts put forth to share your interest in watches. Your blend of history, manufacture knowledge, watch movements, functionality, design, real field use! and a laid back, "fireside chat delivery" is easy to appreciate and enjoy. Some may be interested in watch band selection and source... then again? . .

great review....the only one by the way on YT....I've had this watch twice and this time I'm probably not selling it. When you see it in person it really pops even more than that...The high grade movement with micro-stella screws highly competes with the explorer (for example!) Too much is said about the explorer but I think this Railmaster has one of the coolest dials on the market. Should be around 4000 dollars.Thank you

Fantastic discussion. Thank you. Funny enough I owned a Co-Axial Railmaster in 2003, bought from a Tokyo boutique. After 2 days it stopped running and I had to return it. Unfortunately, they had no other Railmasters and I ended up getting a DeVille Co-Axial Chronograph instead. Though I love the latter watch and continue to wear it, I really liked the simple elegance of the Railmaster re-release. Have a good day.

Hi there! First I would like to say that, the Omega Railmaster is a beautiful watch. And I enjoyed the review of it, great work. But I have one point of constructive criticism. The camera shakes when you move your hands as you speak. So in the future I would recommend that you keep your hands off the table while you speak. This is a minor thing, and I haven't noticed this in your other videos. But it is something to keep in your mind. Also the polish on that watch is amazing, I could see you scroll up and down on your phone in the reflection, hehe. Great review, looking forward to the next one!

Omega needs to bring this watch back badly right now ... as other brands are offering more watches in the 36-39mm range, Omega could really benefit from this. It doesn't even need to have the new METAS or 88xx movements, use an older movement or ETA for that matter. I would pay good money for this right now to go with my Tudor Black Bay 36.

@dougg4633
@dougg4633 2 года назад
@@kyle_vr Holding up nicely and still my daily wear I have a Speed master for weekends and a Zenith el primero. Love them all but the railmaster is my daily. The lume I guess has a very slight green but only when it's been lit up with sun light . Then in dark,yes the lume is green (more lime like). I like it as a daily because it just works. It's not over complicated and you see the time. The Speed master and Zenith I have to focus a bit to read the time. My wife has the Tudor BB 36 in blue. That's a nice watch but a bit small. My friend has the new Railmaster, I personally don't like it. Oddly I don't like the train track look of it.

I had mine serviced last November(11/2022) by Omega. The rotor was not winding it, so it would always stop around 4 hours after taking it off. I don't believe in getting a watch serviced until they stop; the price for service is the same regardless of how many parts it needs. So they told me I got nearly 20 years out of occasional wear before getting it serviced. I did need to send it back a second time, since it still had the rotor issue when I got it back. SMH

Ummm... One small correction. Not all three of the "-master" collections were introduced in 1957. Speedmaster and Railmaster were indeed, but the Seamaster collection itself was introduced in 1949. The Omega archive gives 1958 as the year of introduction of the ref. CK 2913, the Seamaster 300 (diver watch). Meanwhile, the Speedmaster was based upon the earlier Seamaster chronograph, and was a "spin-off" of the Seamaster collection. It featured the same chronograph movement (Omega 321/ Lemania CH27 C12).

The one problem I still have with this watch is the name. This is NOT a proper railroad watch. It may be anti-magnetic, but it lacks both precision markings and numbers on the dial. I wish they would have given it a proper name which truly described this watch. It takes more than a movement to make a time-keeping instrument.
