WARNING: I overuse the word "Puppy" in this video to the point of being past annoying! I could have either re-shot the entire video or just ran it as it is. I chose the latter. Sorry if this annoys you. It annoys me too. But, some things just aren't that important.
I take a pretty in depth look at this awesome little direct drive tiller, available from Home Depot. Includes footage of actual use and other things to look out for when selecting a tiller for your use.

I just bought the Troy-Bilt Big Red Horse tiller. It is built solid. The tiller part is driven by a PTO so you can actually remove the tiller part and run a different accessory. It is built solid. Many people have their Troy-bilt that are 34 years old and still run.

I have the same exact one for about 2-3 years now. Never had any problem starting up or running under load. I'm very happy with it so far..

The shields on the sides are obviously for protection so that the knives are not exposed from anywhere. The construction of the sheet metal is also more robust when you have those extras. Don't get me wrong this is a nice tiller of yours too!

Really wish we would've gotten a rear tine tiller. We just got a Honda FC600 mid-tine tiller. It does okay but, for the price I'd rather have a rear tine. They seem to chew better. Good looking unit you got.

Thanks for the review bro. The HDs where I live (Eastern Panhandle of WV) dont sell these in the store nor advertise them. so glad i saw your video. Was gonna buy the Husqvarna model but hated the construction. I really like this tiller. No frills but beats the living heck out of my compacted clay!!!lol

Hi Neel, That thing is a beast. I was amazed at how it tears it up. I was debating fixing the old tiller, but not I think I'm just going to salvage the parts.

I sharpened the blades on mine to easily cut thru sprinkler pipes, cable cables, well pump wire and yard light wires. Now I have a week of repairs before I can spread grass seed. I'm revisiting my "more is better" theory.

Nothing beats a Howard Gem! Best rototiller ever manufactured. Later manufactured under the name dowdswell. They better be the best walk behind rototiller ever made. Last I heard they were selling for over $10,000.

Nice job on the review and showing what it would do in your garden spot. I present tiller is pretty much like your old one. Since I've kept it in a shed, it still looks very good. If I keep my garden spot tilled and loose, it does just fine. New ground is the challenge. The new tiller has much more power.

Thanks for the review was awesome and the convincing that I needed. And the price is right. $500.00 bucks how can you beat that and the way it performed on what you were doing I couldn't ask for more then that my old Troy bilt was slow and would take at least three passes to do what you did in one. Again thank you great job.

Did you ever sharpen the tines on your old tiller? After 20 years of use, tines wear, usually to the point of needing to be replaced.

I bought one of these based on your review. It's a good tiller. The minimalist design leaves very little to go wrong. It's short handled though so you're bent over the entire time you're using it. Still, for $499 it's a good deal.

Front tine tillers are useless and require an insane amount of effort to work. My Dad has had one since the 1970s and I refuse to touch it. I bought a tiller for the tractor instead.

I think I have answer as to why there is no side cover over the tines, I used mine yesterday in a grassy field and it keeps clogging up with grass. So I have to keep trying to pull some out of the sides to get the tines just to move.

Take the depth control bar from your old machine and install it backward in your new one. It looks as if it was designed to also use as a cultivator spade to tear up the middle ground where the tines missed. Your new tiller might do this as well but I could not tell.

I've had this about four months and have found it to be an aggressive and powerful rig. ru-vid.comUgkxjo0FLo5z3Y_qUcT3vSlOqpMaMdFjvsXa I've used several others in the past and the Sun Joe surpasses these, easily. I note that several people have commented that it bounces on rocky and compacted soil. I believe that would be the case with all tillers - the ground does need to be "broken", either with a larger tractor type unit or with a shovel, and rocks need to be removed. I'm living on a Pike silt loam here in the midwest and the Sun Joe turns my garden to bug dust in two quick passes. I use a technique where I do a short 2 foot run then pull it back and let it go over it again.

I'm using it now. Started right up and tears up the ground. I'm very happy with it. However, I failed to check the tire pressure before using it and it must have been low allowing the tires to shift on the rims while it was digging. This caused the valve stems to rub against the rim and ended up with holes in both. I just assumed that since there were tubes in it, the air would not have leaked out over the winter. Lesson learned. They need solid rubber tires on these things.

Sounds like not enough air. Be sure there is no dirt between the rim and the tire that prevents a good seal. Might not work to use inner tubes since the wheels are driven, an under-inflated tire could spin inside the rim and pull/tear the valve out. I had this issue with my old tiller.
