Defunct Games reviews Puyo Puyo Tetris by Sega, available April 25 on Sony PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.
After waiting so long for Puyo Puyo Tetris to finally come to America, I can't help but feel a bit underwhelmed. It's a good game with a ton of modes and gorgeous graphics that help each puzzler pop, but feels a bit limited when it comes to the standard single-player experience. A lot of the modes you've come to expect from these two classic games are either barebones or missing altogether. While that's certainly disappointing, there's still a lot to like about Puyo Puyo Tetris.

Honestly buying a Puyo Puyo game for its singleplayer mode is like buying a fighting game for its singleplayer

Sure, but that's not the case when it comes to Tetris. Almost all of my time with Tetris has been with single-player modes, which is part of what kept me coming back for almost three decades. I wish they had fleshed out the one-player Tetris stuff like past games.

Yeah I get what you're saying! I just feel like if you came into this game with the mindset of it mainly being a Puyo game with Tetris along side it you wouldn't have been so disappointed with the singleplayer y'know.

That could be. As a huge fan of Tetris, I went into the game thinking it was going to be a fun new Tetris game that also had Puyo Puyo. I still think it's a good game and fans of both series will likely enjoy it. But if there are other people out there like me (especially since Puyo Puyo has never been a big thing in the West), I figured that it's worth noting that this is more Puyo Puyo with Tetris than the other way around.

here is what you missed out: the game was originally released on ps3/Vita/Wii u in Asia and had DLC which added skins (Sega and gameboy themed) to the tetrominoes and puyos as well as extending the single player story mode. the game was then released on ps4 and Xbox one in Asia and contained all of the dlc on the disc. the western ps4 and switch versions should both contain these extra items.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought there were standard single player Tetris, PuyoPuyo and Fusion game modes available at the very opening menu of the game. No need to click through *any* menu options at all!

There is for Puyo Puyo, but not Tetris. I actually had to root around to figure out how to play a standard single-player round of Tetris.

Hmm maybe this was a prior iteration or something; on my PPT game there are definitely the three main modes available for instant standard single-player action, on the same opening screen as the menu button to go into the game's many fun modes.

I have my eye on Edith Finch and actually emailed the publisher earlier today. Fingers crossed. Little Nightmares wasn't even on my radar, so thank you for bringing it up. Just looked at a gameplay video and it looks like fun. Will definitely reach out and try to get a review up for it. Thanks again for the recommendations.

Yeah. They challenged me on the very first day I had the game (not even an hour into me playing the game) and I was shocked by how much better they were. I foolishly forgot that many people had been playing the Japanese version for years, so my 45 minutes of practice wasn't enough to go up against somebody who had likely spent hundreds of hours with the game. There's definitely a competitive scene out there that seems cool, but I'm not sure that element is for me.

I'd like this so much more if it involved Puzzle League/Tetris Attack/Panel de Pon (same game, different names), maybe instead of Puyo Puyo if need be

I'm still mad about no western Vita version. But maybe I'll import it if I can get the PS4 version. Tetris Ultimate ruined everything, by the way.

Agreed. It's a little confusing that Sega is only releasing the PS4 and Switch version in the West, since it's also on Xbox One, PS Vita, Wii U and 3DS. Now that the localization has been done, I can't imagine it would take much to bring those other versions to these shorts. Especially baffled the Xbox One version didn't make the cut.

I'm sure they would've at least given us digital versions of some of those versions, but I think there's some copyright law or something that permits more than one version of Tetris from being on the same system and storefront.

That's what I thought, too. But didn't Tetris Ultimate also come to the PlayStation 4? Or has that been de-listed in the last few years?

Yeah, Tetris Ultimate is still up. That's why Puyo Puyo Tetris is only coming out on a disc for the PS4.
