This is my review of the R88 SBUS & PWM receiver from RadioMaster. This video also shows me range testing the R88 telemetry receiver using my standard test procedures. Please see link below for full details of how I carry out my unscientific tests. The results in my video will be available in a document file on my google drive for you to check out. This is not a scientific test, I will follow the same procedure for all the receivers and show the results which of cause could be different in other environments.
The R88 was kindly supplied for review by RadioMaster.

Hi. Here is an awesome update about R88 receiver. finally after testing the blank (4th pin) on the side near the SBUS port i found out that its the external voltage measurement pin which measures and transmits voltage value to the transmitter with "A2" label. I tested it with my R88 V2 receiver in D16 mode. not sure if it works with R88 V1 or D8 mode. Initially the ratio needed to be calibrated for accurate voltage value.

Hi Bill, do you have an idea if 2 these receivers will be bound simultaneously to a TX like the RX8s in order to have 16channels?
@the-happy-RC-flyer
@the-happy-RC-flyer 2 года назад
You should be able to do this by selecting 1-8 then 9-16 giving them the same receiver number but I have not tested this.

Thanks for the amazing test! How have you bind this receiver with your TX, D8, D16 or SFHSS? And does the protocol affect range? I have bind it with my boxer with D16 protocol and did freqtune, but still getting a range of no more than 300m
@the-happy-RC-flyer
@the-happy-RC-flyer 3 месяца назад
Hi, D16 and no the range will not be affected by the protocol used. If 300 metres on the ground that is ok. If you have fine frequency tuned and installed the antennas correctly that is the best you will get. If you really want long range try Express LRS.

Hi Terry, I tested the RadioMaster receivers and flown them in my fixed wings with no failsafes but credit where it is due FrSky receivers are good. The RadioMaster R88 PWM/SBUS receiver did well in my tests and I used it in my Canary plane with no telemetry loses or failsafe. Bonus is its an 8 channel and can be used later with a flight stabilisation system because of the SBUS capability. If you consider purchasing a RadioMaster receiver from RadioMaster directly please consider clicking on my affiliate link it does help me with my channel. radiomasterrc.myshopify.com?sca_ref=1531318.eCAoyeniWT I have flown my wing with a RadioMaster R84 with no problems but it is only has 4 channels.

Rafael, you need to hold down the bind button on the R88 then apply power. The LED will flash red. In your radio select the correct protocol, see the receiver manual, select bind. Power down the receiver and power back up it should be bound. Remember to Fine Frequency Tune the receiver, I have a video of how to do this.

What would be a better reciever than the R88? I just lost a plane this morning since the connection broke before i could even complete 1 oval over the runway. I have never lost signal in such a short distance and a short amount of time before. To think that this could even happen these days is quite frustrating. I was eager to try this brand. But after this experience i feel id just go back to Spektrum and Futaba.

@@the-happy-RC-flyer yes. Immediately after the plane took off and climbed out, i started banking left to start the loop. Thats when i got a startling alert saying RSSI LOW. Immediately i decided to bring the plane back down. But even as it was crossing over me it alerted again saying RSSI Critical. Which i found odd because the plane was literally just over the outside of the runway. As i was preparing to land and attempted to bank left. Thats when the signal broke and would no longer accept input. Alert called out TELEMETRY LOST. And that was it. Couldnt do anything else but watch it cruise away. I have other planes using Spectrum RX. And i had just flown 2 other planes before this one. Should i just stick to DSM2 and forgrt the R88? Tomorrow im going to put another R88 in an old trainer plane and see what happens.

@@afbenaza it’s not good when you lose confidence in a product. Did you do a range test before flying? I would suggest looking at the antenna connectors and make sure the pins are not bent. There was either outside interference, bent antenna connectors, antenna installation to close to other electrical wiring or faulty receiver. I would suggest range checking the R88 which went to failsafe. Make sure you are not on low power mode.

Interesting that at 500m you had a drop in connection .... but lets be honest - over 300m is good enough for majority of flyers ... In range testing - I prefer to watch servos as well being an old fashioned RC'r before RSSI !! It's nice though that RM and a few others have recognised the fact that there are many of us still out there with older FrSky format gear ... and the real bonus of course is the budget price. With regard to 'penetration' 2.4 is well known to not have good penetration - even a chain-link fence can reduce the connection ... unlike the old FM sets - it really is CLEAR LOS frequency. Would like to see more PWM testing of gear though - not everyone goes SBus ...
