Just by looking at these boots, it is apparent that you really like wearing them. That pretty much says it all.

I've been looking at these the past few days. Oro Legacy is probably my favorite color, plus I have the Copper Rough n Tough Iron Rangers, which is my second favorite color for the moc toe boots. Mostly commenting because you uploaded this video at the peak of me wanting to buy a pair, haha. It's strange, because back when I was buying my Iron Rangers a few years ago, I never even took notice to how nice moc toe boots actually look. I essentially ignored the boot until recently. I'm not sure what caught my eye, but lately I've been feeling the style more so than the iron rangers. I wear mostly casual clothing as it is anyway, so the casual style is perfectly suitable for me. Thanks for the update, great video! I have to say, updated boot/shoe reviews after they've been put through the ringer are my favorite shoe content. Seeing how the leather wears in and hearing about the experience of them is great to have before diving in on a pair.

Yeah like I said I feel weird wearing Iron Rangers with t-shirts but the moc toes are great casual boots, they look expensive but casual - a good mix for stylish dudes! The way you talk about always ignoring the moc toe until recently is how I felt about the Taft Jack boot haha, took like a year before I decided I liked them. I know what you mean about old boots being the best to look at , I want to start a series where I try to find viewers I can meet in person and do a video on their old boots. Will have to do a call out for the NYC area!

I just exchanged my size ten prairie leather for these 8890 charcoals. I love em and actually had to go a full size 9’s. The break in is light years away compared to the wrong size 10’s I had. If it’s the right fit the boot break in is not so bad as people think. Great review man!!!

Nice review! Our UPS deliveryman has 5 pairs of 875's with the crepe sole and says when he sends them in for resole they now will add rubber to the ridges, which helps his wear longer. I love mine and will inquire about this when I get my next resole~~

I have been wearing this for a number of years and have become one of my favorite pair. The guys at Red Wing recommend Natureseal for conditioning and to increase water repellent.
@Stridewise
@Stridewise 6 лет назад
Really? I'm surprised Red Wing recommended any products that aren't made by Red Wing, though I guess their products are more about conditioning than waterproofing. Personally I don't use waterproofing products on my boots since they say it can "suffocate" the leather (whatever that means) but then again I don't really trudge around very marshy environments in my boots, I just run around Brooklyn. Glad you liked these boots too, Calvin! They're very dear to me.
@CalvinSeah
@CalvinSeah 6 лет назад
I absolutely love them! I have worn them many times during my travels because I need a comfortable boots for walking and wouldn't fall apart during my trip. Now I have a Red Wing Chukka 3140 for that purpose! Not sure are we talking about the same Natureseal? The guys at Red Wing Store recommend Natureseal back then because I'm looking for something to protect my boots against snow and rain during my travels. They did mentioned it's so good that boot oil or leather cream isn't needed as it's conditioning properties is more than enough. You can check it out here: www.irishsetterboots.com/USD/product/accessories/95147-naturseal-liquid-8-oz
@Stridewise
@Stridewise 6 лет назад
Ohhhhh Natureseal is a Red Wing product!!! Now I understand, sorry man I thought it was a different brand and I didn't remember seeing that one on Red Wing's shoe care site. Yeah it looks like it'd do a good job of both moisturizing and protecting against the weather, if I were ever to go hiking or something I might consider it depending on the boots.

Is there a sole that mimics the look of Red Wing's wedge sole, but has the durability of a Vibram rubber lug sole?
@SnD340
@SnD340 3 года назад
Red wing wedge is made of rubber I believe. If you get a wedge made of poly (Thursday and thoro) they have the same design but have a harder durometer. This allows the material to be harder and last longer.

Great shoes and review. One of red wings' interesting moc toe in black leather is the 9874 in Klodike leather. Its a double-tanned leather with a brown core and black exterior and becomes really gorgeous when it ages.

You know I just got a pair of Blacksmiths and they didn't have a break in, I'm so surprised! And a bit disappointed tbh, I like knowing that the break in is making for boots that really fit my foot well.

abner carrera just bought 8859 Navy. Walked about 14km around Ottawa day one. Needless to say I had a huge blister on my little toe. I think I’ll try wearing them around the house for a few days before logging any distance again. How did yours end up breaking in?

I have the 1907s. The bottoms wear a lil fast besides that boots are bulletproof. When u get a new sole put on pick a pair tuffer sole more durable like the 411.

I bought a pair of RedWing just under a year ago. I saw them in John Lewis, went nuts and bought them for £250. I liked the idea of adding fairly decent quality American heritage boots to my collection. I went for the 8138 (I always have to Google ‘redwing boots’ in order to find the model number). However, I wasn’t a huge fan of the style (and I have - or had - a thing about not wanting a dirty crepe sole), so I passed them on to my Dad, who loves them. They are easily his favourite and best quality footwear. Occasionally he will ask me to clean them up for him. So I scrub the sole with a scrubbing brush and soapy water, allow them to dry and give them a good polish with neutral Saphir cream. They almost look as good as new each time.

Hey, how important is the shoe tree? Thanks.
@Stridewise

They help to retain the shape of the shoe, see how the toe is curling upward a little bit here? It's not so bad with these shoes but if you look at my Red Wing vs Wolverine video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kYvcLK864n8.html it's quite a bit more pronounced. Great job Nick, liked it even before watching the video. A great way to start the morning too here in Malaysia. I have my 2 years old Iron rangers in Charcoal Rough and Tough too and the colour lighten up drastically after a saddle soap wash. A proper oiling will darken it back again but I’m keeping it light with Red Wing Leather Cream for now. Have a great day, and keep up the great work!

Are we talking US Dollars? These go way less than $250 on Amazon. They were my first grown-up boots, too, and I got them for $180 on Amazon! I guess they don't go down that low anymore tho, so I'm glad I stocked up. :P I still wear them with slacks... and also hike in them... and like them both for slacks and for hiking! i should have watched this before i bought them but this video didn't exist yet ha! I do love them very much tho.
@Stridewise
@Stridewise 6 лет назад
After I posted this I saw them drop to 220 for some varieties but I haven't seen them dip lower. If you see them cheaper, you've gotten lucky! Sounds like they've been extra versatile for you, a lot of people dont like the flat-ish crepe sole for hiking but I'm glad they worked out for you Jesse.

I'm pretty glad I overspent whenever I saw a good deal on Red Wings, because it seems like now, the only way to do that is with factory seconds! Yeah, the thing I like about the traction tread sole is that it doesn't get a lot of dirt stuck to it (I have some Roughnecks which are awesome for hiking, but mud really gets stuck between the big treads). The traction tread was originally designed for farmers so that they wouldn't track as much dirt and cow poo into the house, and it was marketed toward hunters and outdoorsy folks. Whether it found a niche there, I don't know; it became popular mostly with factory workers because it was so comfortable on the wooden factory floors and wouldn't leave marks! And now they're popular with Ryan Gossling, as you said :P

Did you notice if it was a factory second? I’ve noticed Nordstrom Rack sells them as well but they are factory seconds. (Which I don’t mind and will buy when possible since I’m a college student). I just picked up a pair of Beckmans for 160ish on a sale but they are clearly marked factory seconds on the site and returnable if you can’t live with whatever defect they might have.
@JesseDylanMusic
@JesseDylanMusic 6 лет назад
Nope, mine aren't seconds! In fact, the seconds I've bought have been the most expensive Red Wings I've ever purchased. My Beckmans were factory firsts for $180, if I recall, or less. But my Rancher Chelsea (basically a beckman chelsea) was $190 for a factory second. I guess I rode that train for all it's worth tho, cause it seems like stuff stays much closer to retail price now, unless you can catch a 50% off sale somewhere.

Another classic shoe, Nick. Nice review. (I have the 875 and the 8890) Here's a tip. If you ever want to clean the stitching and make it look white again, use neutral shoe polish (I use Kiwi carnouba wax). The solvents in the wax will loosen the dirt and wax from the stitching and they will look good again. I like the contrast of the stitching to show on these. Also, I rarely ever condition my redwings. I prefer them to look distressed. If I need to wash them I use Dawn dish soap. Yep, I know, but it works great for me. take care.

I find the last of the moctoe (23) to be slimmer than the one used in the IR (last 8) if your feet is more of a “fuller” D width in the IR consider ordering these in the E width
@Stridewise
@Stridewise 5 лет назад
I think you're right, this is a bit slimmer.
@Marx_Ramone
@Marx_Ramone 4 года назад
You're right and I think that's what confuse a lot of people. The 23 last is a bit shorter and more narrow than the 8 last. They don't have the same length. Since the 23 is so narrow it's more likely to fit better going true to size OR getting EE. The iron ranger has more space in the toebox and it's a bit longer so to that specific boot is that I think that applies the "general rule" of going half a size down. Even in Nick's mocs you can see how much of the leather from the side of the toebox goes over the welt. You can bet that took a lot of time and effort.

A good video idea is to ask the question, why are we so passionate about boots? I’m surprised to learn your ‘boot journey’ started so recently. Though, to be honest, my foray into boot wearing only started a year ago. Well, I did have a pair of Rockport boots when at school back in the 90’s, as they were highly coveted back then. However, they hardly count, as they would struggle to qualify as ‘real’ boots, especially in terms of quality construction. Then I may have had a pair of cheap work boots when I made fireplaces. Oh, and don’t forget the pairs I had when in the army - shockingly poor quality. I suppose when I talk about ‘first boots,’ I mean quality boots, preferably with the goodyear construction.
@Stridewise

Good to see you again, Rev! Yeah for most people 'goodyear welt' is shorthand for high quality boots, though there are plenty of nice (if a bit dressier) boots that don't.

Funny my first pair of good boots were courtesy of the us army. Beforehand I had a no boots stance as I was ignorant of my choices and believed only dr martens and timberland boots and their cheap copies were the only thing around. Even then the boots weren't that great but did cement the idea into my mind of a "do it all" piece if durable footwear and I started upgrading from there, though still finding myself drawn to boots similar to those I had while enlisted as they did have a comfy footbed. I currently have a pair of danners for work and not work and think these might be the last pair of footwear I'll buy for quite a while. Idk if that'll be the case though.

Have to disagree with you in your opinion of Thorogood's lesser quality when compared to Red Wing. I challenge you to get a pair of Thorogood moc toes and get a true idea of the difference. I've had both and other than Thorogood's cotton vamp, they are superior in every way.

Stridewise Looking forward to it. I am still weighing up if I should get a pair of Thorogood Janesvilles to add to the collection. I suppose they are a slightly dressier version of the moc toe wedge sole. PS I'm not hating on Red Wing. I'm hanging on to my Beckman and chukkas, but sold on the 875s.
@Stridewise

Got damn the Janesville looks exactly like this Red Wing moc toe! Very interesting, thanks for bringing it to my attention. I say get a pair of Red Wing moc toes and then you and I can compare notes :)

Stridewise I had a pair of of 875s (moc toes) and a pair of Thorogood moc toes. The Thorogood were superior, and now I'm thinking of getting another pair but perhaps the horween cxl janesville instead.
@JJ-lu6mg
@JJ-lu6mg 6 лет назад
Thorogoods are very comfortable right out of the box and great for the cost of them. But Redwings leather and stitching is definitely a higher quality. Redwings are more consistent in their quality where Thorogoods you will see variations in a lot of their boots. I own both and I like both companies. The Thorogoods are great for work and the Redwings I like for after work.

Just got 1907s. Love the boots but the insole is absolutely a piece of crap. The leather and rubber has an overlap which causes a crazy pressure point for me. I had to take them out, flip them and switch from left to right. Maybe I’ll switch em back later if the break in and the pressure point goes away but I doubt it. Since I started using aftermarket insoles while snowboarding I realize how awful most boots and sneaker insoles are. Also I’m a 9 in everything w inch in the toe box and tight on sides. Orders 8.5 but the sent me 9s by accident and there’s no way 8.5s would fit a wide foot. True size for 1907s imo. My Danner bull run luxs are crazy comfy compare to 1907 both new.

Nearly all of the crepe soled boots and chukkas by Red Wing, (and others) have that unappealing look when the heels are worn, even just a bit. The expression, "Down at the heels" was an expression of income, but also a degree of carelessness in footwear maintenance. Clark's desert chukkas, and other vulnerable soles, share this unfortunate distinction. No, my preference is for boots with detachable heels to prevent a complete resole job. Thanks for the quality of your videos, which are accessible long after you have made them. I find the comments both informative, and the feedback from watchers also informative, but at times testy and unfortunately inane. Forget the slamming from the uninformed who do not do their homework. Your videos touch many aspects of footwear to make purchase relevant. Kudos to you.
@Stridewise
@Stridewise 4 года назад
Interesting perspective on detachable heels! I think there are some more durable white soles one could replace this with, but yeah I get it. I really appreciate your comment! I try to make stuff that will be watchable for years after it's made - that's what makes content valuable, plus it's a good business decision too. If you want to call this dopey channel a business haha. Thanks so much for your kind words.

Here's some honest feedback, I've sworn by red wing boots for years, don't listen to bullshit. I work in them daily and they have stayed waterproof in all conditions I've worn them in and have gotten 1.5-2 years in them and that was no upkeep or bullshit with them, strictly work boots. Really, they've only worn out on the bottom, which is understandable. The pair I have now, I've had for about 8 months and they look like dry rotted tires, holes all over the sides, the bottoms are pretty beat, feet get soaked, they're fucking trash. I feel like over time red wings popularity has increased a lot, and with that they've started using cheaper material and charging more for their products. I know a guy at work that lasted about 2 months before holes, luckily he took them back and got another pair but that's fucking terrible for a 150-300$ pair of "work boots". What a fucking joke, I'll never buy red wings again, I'm gonna try some wolverines or timberlands that are cheaper, maybe I can get my money's worth out of them.

I own a pair of mocs and just purchased the 8890's today, but I have to say, these look like absolute shit after heavy use. Without a white sole, preferably a new one, they don't look broken in, they look trashed. It's hard to explain because worn in beat up boots look the best - these don't look like that. Please resole these and come back. I want to see what they look like with a proper sole on them, I bet it's 1000x better.
